Chapter 13 - THE DEAD MAN’S WILL

The safe house was a windowless, concrete bunker situated thirty feet beneath a private security firm in the industrial district. The air was sterile, smelling faintly of ozone and industrial disinfectant. Noah had finally fallen asleep on a leather cot, his small thumb resting against his lip, wrapped in Leah’s oversized paramedic jacket.

Adam sat across a steel desk from Leah, his tie undone, his hands trembling as he stared at an open black leather briefcase.

"It makes no sense," Adam said, rubbing his eyes until the skin turned raw. "I run a commercial logistics firm. I don't deal with cartels. I don't deal with loan sharks. I have competitors, sure, but nobody who puts a sniper on a roof to shoot a six-year-old boy."

"Think harder, Adam," Leah pressed gently, sitting beside him. "The restaurant railing was sabotaged. The shooter knew exactly where Noah’s bed was placed without stepping inside your house. Whoever is doing this knows your life down to the millimeter."

Adam paused, his expression freezing. A strange, ghostly pallor washed over his features.

"What is it?" Leah asked.

"My father," Adam whispered, the words barely audible. "He died six months ago. Arthur Sterling. He was the founder of Sterling Heritage Holdings."

Leah frowned. "I read about him in the news. He was a billionaire philanthropist. What does that have to do with Noah?"

Adam reached into the briefcase and pulled out a thick, notarized legal document bound with blue ribbons. He flipped to the final annex and pointed to a clause highlighted in bold ink.

"My father had a stroke three years ago," Adam explained, his breathing becoming shallow. "Before he died, he became paranoid that my older stepbrother, Julian, was embezzling money through shell companies in the Cayman Islands. My father secretly changed his last will and testament. He bypassed Julian entirely. He bypassed me, too."

Leah leaned in and read the highlighted text: *“All primary voting shares, trust assets, and real estate holdings shall transfer irrevocably to my grandson, Noah Sterling, upon his seventh birthday. In the event of Noah Sterling’s demise prior to his seventh birthday, all assets revert entirely and unconditionally to Julian Sterling.”*

Leah felt the hair on the back of her neck stand on end. "When is Noah’s seventh birthday, Adam?"

Adam looked up, horror bleeding through his gaze.

"Tomorrow night at midnight."
