Chapter 6 - THE HOUSE UNDER WATCH

Within three minutes, every exterior door of the Mercer estate was locked. Security guards swept the grounds while police searched neighboring roads. Julian stood in the nursery holding Emma, staring at the photograph on his phone as rage battled fear inside him.

The image had been taken less than five minutes earlier. Someone was close. Detective Brooks ordered Julian, Emma, and Rosa moved to a secure interior room. Julian resisted until she reminded him that protecting his daughter mattered more than participating in the search. He hated being told the truth, but he obeyed.

The unknown number sent another message. BURN THE DRIVE. A minute later came a third. OR THE NEXT PICTURE WILL BE CLOSER.

Julian showed Brooks. “Do not respond,” she said. The police cyber unit began tracing the messages. The number was routed through an internet service and bounced across several countries. Whoever was sending them understood how investigations worked.

Richard Vale had spent decades moving money invisibly. Hiding a message was probably easy. Rosa sat beside Emma’s portable crib, pale but steady. “Why would he risk coming here?”

“Because the flash drive can destroy him,” Julian said. David, standing near the door, shook his head. “The drive is evidence now. Burning your copy changes nothing.”

“Richard may not know police have it.” “That means he is guessing.” Julian looked at the dark security monitor. “Or someone is telling him.”

That possibility silenced the room. Only a small number of people knew the box had been opened: Julian, Rosa, David, Nina, Detective Brooks, two bank officials, and the officers present. A leak could come from anywhere.

Brooks did not become defensive. “I will handle my side. You handle yours.” Julian immediately thought of his own staff. Vanessa had lived in the estate for months. She could have recruited someone, paid someone, or simply found a weak point. He ordered the security company to suspend remote access for every employee until credentials were reset.

Thirty seconds later, one of the interior cameras went dark. Then another. Then the front gate opened by itself. The estate’s control system had been compromised.

Brooks swore under her breath and ordered officers to shut down the smart-home network entirely. Lights flickered off. Electronic locks reverted to manual backups. The mansion that had always felt modern and protected suddenly became a maze of blind hallways.

Outside, a guard shouted. Everyone froze. A crash followed from the direction of the service entrance. Brooks drew her weapon and moved toward the door, leaving another detective with Julian and Rosa. Minutes passed like hours.

Finally, her radio crackled. They had caught a man near the kitchen wing. He was not Richard. He was one of Julian’s own security technicians, Evan Pike.

Evan had worked for the estate for eighteen months and had full access to the network. Police found a remote relay device in his backpack and $40,000 in cash hidden inside his car.

Under questioning, he admitted Vanessa paid him to preserve copies of deleted camera footage and create blind spots when requested. He claimed he never knew she intended to harm Emma.

Julian nearly lost control when he heard that excuse. “You helped her enter rooms without being seen,” he said through the glass of the temporary interview area. “You erased footage from my daughter’s nursery.”

Evan stared at the floor. “I thought she was checking on the nanny.” “You took forty thousand dollars not to think.” Brooks pulled Julian away before the conversation became more dangerous.

Evan eventually provided what investigators needed. Vanessa had contacted him the previous night from a prepaid phone. She ordered him to place her handbag in the greenhouse and monitor whether the family discovered the safe-deposit box.

She had not told him where she was. But she had made one mistake. During the call, Evan heard church bells in the background, followed by the horn of a commuter train. Detectives compared the timing with rail schedules and narrowed the likely area to three towns north of the city.

One of those towns contained an abandoned property once owned by Richard Vale’s brother. Police prepared a search warrant. Meanwhile, Julian watched Claire’s video again.

Near the end, Claire mentioned a ledger Richard kept separate from all digital systems. She believed it contained names of judges, bankers, doctors, and executives he had paid over the years. Claire never found the ledger, but she believed Elena Hart had seen it before she died.

Vanessa might know where it was. That complicated everything. If Vanessa had spent years trapped between fear and greed, she might be both perpetrator and witness. Julian did not care about excuses for what she had done to Emma, but he understood why Richard might want her close.

She knew too much. At 2:00 a.m., the police team reached the abandoned property. The house was empty. They found recent food, two sleeping bags, and a burner phone smashed in the sink. They also found blood on the kitchen floor.

The amount was small, but fresh. A camera from a nearby gas station showed a dark sedan leaving the area forty minutes before police arrived. The driver appeared male. A woman sat in the passenger seat.

She was holding a cloth to the side of her face. Vanessa. The image changed Julian’s understanding again. She was still dangerous. She had endangered his daughter and participated in a conspiracy. But she might no longer be moving freely.

At sunrise, another message reached Julian’s phone. This one came from Vanessa’s private email account. It contained no threat. Only an address in Queens and four words. HE WILL KILL ME.
