Chapter 4 - The Negative

The freight terminal was larger than Naomi remembered. Rows of low buildings faced rusted tracks, and the river beyond them carried a pale morning fog against concrete pilings.

Brooks brought a search team to the records storage unit named on the renovation schedule. She required Adrian and Naomi to remain beyond the perimeter. The objection was reasonable, even as every minute hurt.

The unit's outer lock was intact. Inside were shelves of boxed files, water damage along one wall, and a white envelope taped beneath a metal desk. Mara's handwriting marked it "Original."

Brooks opened the envelope with a technician present. It contained a diagnostic film, a billing printout, and a photograph of an ultrasound screen. The photograph Vanessa showed Adrian had been cropped from it.

The original image belonged to another patient who had consented to a training archive years earlier. A date in the lower corner placed the scan five years before Vanessa met Adrian.

Naomi exhaled slowly. She had expected deception, yet proof of it still struck her like a personal injury. Ava had seen the truth first and had paid for it with fear.

A handwritten note from Mara explained that Vanessa had asked for an electronic copy of the training image. Mara had refused. Someone later accessed the archive using Malcolm's contractor credentials.

The note stopped mid-sentence: "He said the boy needs—". A dark smear crossed the page. Naomi read the fragment twice, unable to identify the boy Mara meant.

Across the tracks, a train horn sounded. Daniel noticed a side gate standing open beside a disused office. Brooks sent two officers around it while the others continued cataloging the storage unit.

They found Mara inside the office, locked in a maintenance closet. She was dehydrated and frightened but able to walk. A paramedic examined her before Brooks asked any questions.

Mara said Malcolm had taken her from her apartment and demanded the original scan. Vanessa had arrived later, frantic after the gala, and ordered Elias to watch the terminal road.

"She said Adrian would sign once he believed the child was in danger," Mara recalled. "Then she saw the police cars and left through the service gate."

Mara could not tell whether Vanessa knew the truth about the land sale. Malcolm had kept the payment amounts on a separate ledger and told her to concern herself with her own agreement.

A nurse from the hospital confirmed Mara could give a full statement after fluids and rest. Brooks secured the signed note and the archive's access records before sending Mara under escort to a safe location.

As Naomi walked to the ambulance, Mara caught her sleeve. "The boy," she said. "Malcolm has a son. He kept showing me pictures, saying he could pay for treatment."

Naomi felt her anger acquire a new edge. A sick child could explain desperation, though it could never excuse abducting a nurse or threatening Ava. She promised Mara she would verify the claim.

At the foundation office, Adrian's attorney, Priya Shah, examined the charter. The transfer document alone could not sell the land, she said; the title company also needed an acknowledgment from an authorized trustee.

Adrian was still the trustee. Malcolm had scheduled a remote vote for ten the next morning, using the supposed pregnancy and a fabricated allegation against Naomi to pressure the remaining members.

Priya prepared an emergency application to prevent any transfer while the signatures were examined. Brooks requested a preservation order for the foundation servers. The legal steps offered relief without pretending the threat was over.

Adrian opened a secure copy of the drive Vanessa had taken. It contained grant files, donor lists, and a board packet for the morning meeting. It also contained an old photograph of Ava and Naomi.

He had stored that photograph in a private folder, not for business. The thought of Vanessa opening it made him feel a shame unlike the public embarrassment of the ballroom.

Naomi found him standing alone beside the office window. He said he should have believed her. She told him belief would have mattered, but listening to specific evidence would have mattered more.

"I was angry with you," he said. "I let someone give my anger a direction." Naomi did not soften the truth for him. She had been angry too, and their daughter had carried the cost.

They drove separately to Ava's aunt's house. Ava met them at the door holding her stuffed fox. Her first question was whether the woman with the knife had been caught.

"The police are looking for her," Naomi answered. "There are people here to keep you safe." Adrian added that Mara was safe, a detail Ava had quietly worried about.

Ava asked whether babies could be pretend. Naomi knelt and explained that the pregnancy claim was false, and that the woman had used a padded costume to deceive them. Ava could ask anything else later.

She nodded, then asked a question neither adult expected. "If she lied, are you and Daddy going to stop fighting?" Silence filled the entryway while rain slid down the front window.

"We're going to work on that," Adrian said. Naomi agreed. They would not promise a restored marriage because Ava wanted one; they could promise a calmer way of being her parents.

That afternoon, Priya secured the temporary order freezing the land transfer. For the first time since the gala, Naomi believed they might keep the clinic. Then Malcolm's attorney filed a challenge.

Attached was an affidavit claiming Naomi had forged the original foundation grant and concealed a second property deed. The affidavit carried a familiar signature: Elias Ward's, witnessed at the empty clinic after midnight.
