Chapter 4 - Red Dots on Champagne Silk

For one endless second, Adrian stood alone beneath the chandeliers with three red laser points trembling across his tuxedo. Then Serena stepped forward. “Stop.” Adrian turned. “Stay back.” She ignored him. The first red dot appeared on her shoulder. A second landed over her heart.

A third slid across the curve of her pregnant belly and stopped directly above the place where their daughter had kicked minutes earlier. A sound moved through the ballroom, not quite a scream and not quite a prayer. Adrian’s face emptied of color.

“No,” he said. Serena looked toward the balcony. The darkened gallery offered no visible shooter, only velvet curtains and shadow. Whoever held the weapons had elevated positions, clear sight lines, and the patience of people who believed everyone below them had already lost.

Lena spoke through the phone in Serena’s hand. “Do not make sudden movements. Response team is three minutes out.” The distorted voice returned through the speakers. “Place the correct item on the floor.” Serena swallowed. She understood now that the lipstick was not merely evidence.

It was leverage. If she gave it up, the shooters might leave. Or they might kill her because she had seen too much. The people behind this had already locked two hundred witnesses in a room. They were not planning a clean exit.

Serena raised her free hand slowly. “You want the tube?” she called. “Yes.” “You need me alive to get it.” A pause. Adrian looked at her sharply, realizing what she was doing. Serena continued. “It has a biometric lock.” Celeste turned her head toward Serena, startled.

There was no biometric lock. Serena did not even know how the lipstick opened. The voice said, “You are lying.” “Then shoot me and find out.” Adrian whispered, “Serena, don’t.” She kept her eyes on the balcony. “If you kill me,” she said, “the device wipes itself.

My father designed it that way.” She had no idea whether that was true, but she knew something about criminals from years of courtroom work: certainty unsettled them when they expected fear. The red dot on her belly shifted. Adrian took one step in front of her.

“Move,” Serena whispered. “No.” “If they shoot, they shoot through you.” “Then they go through me first.” His voice was quiet enough that only she heard it. Anger still lived inside her, but it had changed shape. She hated what he had hidden.

She hated the arrogance of his protection. Yet she knew, with painful clarity, that he was not pretending now. He was willing to die in front of her. “Two minutes,” Lena said. The ballroom lights dimmed. Serena saw movement near the stage.

One of Adrian’s loyal guards, Malcolm Reed, crawled behind the curtain toward a service panel. Another guard crouched beside the kitchen entrance. They were trying to create options without drawing fire. Then Serena felt warmth run down the inside of her leg.

Her heart stopped. Adrian saw her expression. “What?” “I think my water broke.” His eyes widened. Celeste closed her eyes briefly. “Of course it did.” Serena almost laughed despite the terror. A contraction tightened across her abdomen, stronger than the earlier one.

She breathed through it without bending, unwilling to give the shooters any movement they might misread. The voice on the speakers returned. “Last chance.” Serena stared at the balcony. “No,” she said. A gunshot cracked. The chandelier above the dance floor exploded.

Crystal rained down. Guests screamed and dropped to the floor. Adrian grabbed Serena around the shoulders and pulled her behind a marble column as glass shattered where they had been standing. Celeste dove behind a table. Maya disappeared beneath Eli’s body near the cake display.

Another shot struck the column. “Lights!” Malcolm shouted. The ballroom went black. For half a second, the only visible things were the red laser beams slicing through darkness. Then those vanished too. Emergency lights glowed low along the baseboards. “Move!” Adrian yelled.

He guided Serena toward the stage while guests crawled in every direction. Malcolm pulled aside a curtain and revealed a narrow service door. “It’s unlocked,” he said. “For now.” Serena looked back for Maya. “I’m not leaving without my sister.” “Maya!” Adrian shouted.

Eli’s voice answered from the darkness. “Go! We’re behind the bar. We’re safe.” Serena hesitated. Another gunshot punched into the stage. Eli shouted again. “Get the baby out!” Adrian pushed Serena through the service door. Celeste followed, clutching the silver purse to her chest.

Malcolm came last and locked the door behind them. The corridor beyond was narrow, concrete, and lit by a single emergency bulb. It smelled of dust and old paint. Serena leaned against the wall as another contraction rolled through her. Adrian put both hands on her shoulders.

“How far apart?” “I don’t know. I wasn’t timing my labor between sniper fire.” Even Malcolm gave a breathless laugh. Then Lena’s voice crackled from the phone. “Serena, federal teams are entering the hotel. Where are you?” “Behind the ballroom stage. Service corridor.”

“Do not go upstairs. We have possible hostile personnel on levels two and three.” Adrian looked down the corridor. “There’s a maintenance tunnel to the parking structure,” he said. “It was built when the hotel connected to the old convention center.” Malcolm nodded.

“Kane knows about it.” “Then we assume he has men there,” Serena said. Celeste placed the silver clutch on an electrical cabinet and opened it. Inside were cosmetics, a handkerchief, an old brass key, and a folded photograph. Serena stared.

The photograph showed her father standing beside Victor Kane in a warehouse she did not recognize. Between them was a third man whose face had been cut from the picture. On the back, Daniel Cross had written a date. It was three days before his death.

Below the date were four words. THE LIPSTICK OPENS THE DOOR. Serena pulled the tube from her dress. A seam around its base suddenly seemed obvious. She twisted. The bottom clicked open. Inside was not a memory card. It was a tiny metal key. And engraved on that key was a number. 317.
