Chapter 9 - The Coast Guard Intercept

Behind them, the three-hundred-foot *Sovereign Lady* groaned its final, agonizing death rattle.

The bow rose vertically into the night sky, its massive hull looming like a black tombstone against the lightning-streaked clouds. Tons of machinery, chandeliers, and dark secrets tore through the interior bulkheads before the ocean swallowed the vessel whole. With a deafening roar of escaping air and collapsing steel, the flagship of the Sterling dynasty sank four miles down into the abyssal plain.

Dangling in the churning wake, clinging to a buoyant debris container, was Eleanor Sterling.

The searchlight of the chase boat swept across the dark waves, locking onto the shivering, ruined matriarch. She was coughing up brine, her face bloody, her fingers clawing at the floating plastic box. She had lost her yacht. She had lost her fortune. She had lost her empire.

Marcus idled the tender’s engines twenty yards away, the hull bobbing safely in the swells.

Inside the cabin, Clara was lying on the bench cushions, drenched in sweat, breathing raggedly as Toby held her hand with both of his small paws.

"Push, Mom! Push!" Toby cried, his face streaked with tears and salt. "I'm right here! You can do it!"

Clara let out a raw, guttural scream that defied the storm itself. She squeezed her eyes shut, pushing with every ounce of life, love, and defiance left in her shattered body.

A moment later, a sharp, piercing sound cut through the interior of the cabin.

A high-pitched, furious wail.

The cry of a newborn child.

Marcus turned his head, tears stinging his eyes as he looked into the cabin. Clara collapsed against the cushions, weeping uncontrollably as she looked down at the tiny, perfect baby boy resting on her chest. He was pink, screaming with healthy vigor, kicking his tiny feet against the salt-crusted air.

"Julian..." Clara sobbed, burying her nose in the newborn's damp, dark hair. "Your name is Julian."

Suddenly, the roar of twin rotors shook the sky above.

A blinding white beam of four-million-candlepower light pierced the storm clouds, illuminating the chase boat and the debris field around it.

A massive Jayhawk helicopter from the United States Coast Guard descended through the squall, its orange and white fuselage gleaming in the spotlight. Over the radio speaker in the tender’s console, a crackling, authoritative voice broke through the static:

*"Vessel in distress, this is United States Coast Guard Rescue 6022. Maintain your heading. Rescue swimmer deploying now."*

Marcus grabbed the marine radio mic. "Coast Guard 6022, this is Security Officer Marcus Kane. We have an injured mother and a newborn baby secure inside the tender. We also have a suspect in the water. Secure her immediately. She is wanted for double homicide, attempted murder, and grand maritime fraud."

In the water below the helicopter's downdraft, Eleanor Sterling looked up into the blinding light. The rescue swimmer dropped from the hoist, hitting the water ten yards from her.

Eleanor thrashed wildly, screaming at the sky, her voice a cracked, pathetic hiss: "I am Eleanor Sterling! You can't touch me! The money is mine! IT’S ALL MINE!"

The Coast Guard swimmer locked his arms around her shivering shoulders, snapping the steel containment harness around her chest with a crisp, indifferent *click*.

"Ma'am," the swimmer shouted over the deafening rotor wash. "Shut up and hold still. You're under arrest."
