Chapter 2 - THE VIDEOS NO ONE WAS SUPPOSED TO SEEThe pounding came again, harder this time.

"Police! Open the door!"
Daniel remained in the dining room for one more second, one arm around Emily and the other around Noah.
He did not want to release either child.
He especially did not want to leave them in the same room as Margaret and Claire.
But the officers were already there.
Daniel looked toward Claire.
"Stay where you are."
Claire gave a bitter laugh.
"You don't get to order me around."
"No," Daniel said. "But they do."
Another knock shook the front door.
Daniel guided Noah and Emily toward the hallway.
Margaret moved after them.
Daniel turned instantly.
"Don't."
Something in his expression stopped her.
Margaret lowered her hands.
Daniel led his children to the foyer and opened the door.
Two uniformed officers stood on the porch. A third was walking quickly up the driveway.
The first officer, a woman in her forties named Officer Ramirez, immediately looked past Daniel and saw Emily.
Her professional expression changed.
"Sir, step aside."
Daniel did.
Ramirez crouched several feet from Emily rather than approaching too quickly.
"Hi, sweetheart. My name is Officer Ramirez. Are you hurt anywhere?"
Emily gripped Daniel's pants.
She did not speak.
Ramirez looked at Daniel.
"What happened?"
Daniel's voice cracked.
"My mother chained her under the dining table."
The second officer stared at him.
"Chained her?"
Daniel nodded.
"There is a chain in the dining room. My son has videos."
Ramirez stood.
"Where are the adults involved?"
"In there."
She motioned to the second officer.
"You stay with the children."
Then she followed Daniel into the dining room.
The room told part of the story before anyone spoke.
The overturned chair.
The shattered dishes.
The dog bowl.
The wet floor.
The chain.
Books scattered beside the damaged shelf.
Margaret stood near the table holding a cloth against her cheek.
Claire remained beside the bookshelf.
Ramirez looked at Daniel.
"Did you strike either of them?"
Daniel answered immediately.
"Yes."
Claire pointed at him.
"He attacked us!"
Margaret added, "He came into the room completely out of control."
Ramirez raised one hand.
"One at a time."
Daniel forced himself not to react.
He knew how the room looked.
He knew the moment he struck his mother would matter.
He also knew he would not lie about it.
"I struck my mother after I saw her kick my daughter while my daughter was chained under the table."
Ramirez's eyes moved toward the chain.
"And your wife?"
"She slapped me. She moved toward Emily. I pushed her back."
Claire exploded.
"That's a lie!"
Daniel looked at her.
"It isn't."
Ramirez turned toward Claire.
"Ma'am, stop talking for a moment."
The third officer entered.
Ramirez pointed toward the chain and food bowl.
"Photograph everything before anything gets moved."
Daniel returned to the hallway.
Noah was still holding the phone.
The boy looked as if he feared someone might take it from him.
Daniel crouched.
"The police need to see the videos."
Noah shook his head.
"Not yet."
Daniel frowned.
"Why?"
Noah looked toward the officers.
"Because Grandma knows about this phone."
Daniel's skin prickled.
"What do you mean?"
"She checked it before."
"When?"
"Last week."
Noah swallowed.
"She deleted stuff."
Daniel stared at him.
"How do you still have the videos?"
Noah looked down.
"I saved them somewhere else."
A strange mixture of pride and heartbreak moved through Daniel.
His son had been living like a witness inside his own home.
A ten-year-old boy had learned to hide evidence because the adults who should have protected him had failed.
"Where did you save them?"
"Mom's old tablet."
Daniel froze.
He knew immediately which tablet Noah meant.
Sarah's tablet.
Emily and Noah's biological mother had died four years earlier after a highway collision caused by a drunk driver.
Daniel had kept many of her belongings in a locked storage room at the back of the house.
Noah sometimes went there to look through photographs.
"How did you get into the storage room?"
"I found your spare key."
Daniel almost smiled despite everything.
Of course Noah had.
Sarah used to call him her little detective.
"Is that the room you meant?"
Noah shook his head.
"No."
Daniel's brief relief disappeared.
"What room?"
Noah looked past him toward the staircase.
"The room behind Grandma's closet."
Daniel stared at his son.
"There isn't a room behind her closet."
"Yes, there is."
Daniel stood slowly.
The house had been built before he bought it. Several sections had been remodeled, but he knew the floor plan.
At least he thought he did.
"What did you see?"
Noah's voice dropped.
"A camera screen."
Daniel felt his stomach tighten.
"What camera screen?"
Noah's fingers tightened around the phone.
"It showed the kitchen."
Emily looked up.
"And my room."
Daniel turned sharply toward her.
She immediately lowered her eyes.
His chest tightened.
"You knew about it?"
Emily whispered, "Grandma said it was magic."
Daniel knelt.
"What magic?"
"She said she could always see when I was bad."
Ramirez entered the hallway at that moment.
"Mr. Carter, we need medical personnel to examine your daughter."
Daniel nodded.
"Yes. Absolutely."
Then he looked at Noah.
"Tell her."
Noah hesitated.
Ramirez crouched.
"You're not in trouble."
Noah lifted his phone.
"I have videos."
"We'll need them."
"And there's another room upstairs."
Ramirez's expression changed.
"What room?"
Noah explained.
Within minutes, the house shifted from a chaotic domestic disturbance into something much more serious.
A supervisor arrived.
Paramedics examined Emily in the living room.
Another officer separated Margaret and Claire into different rooms.
Daniel sat beside Emily while a paramedic checked her arms, neck, and ribs.
There were no catastrophic injuries.
That did not comfort him.
The medical worker gently noted bruising at different stages of healing.
Some were recent.
Some were older.
Daniel stared at them.
He had seen Emily wear long sleeves several times during warm weather.
Claire had said she was going through a fashion phase.
Daniel had believed her.
His guilt became almost unbearable.
"Mr. Carter."
Officer Ramirez stood nearby.
"We need to look at the space your son described."
Daniel nodded.
"I'll show you Margaret's room."
He did not look at his mother as he led the officers upstairs.
Margaret's bedroom occupied the northeast corner.
Her walk-in closet had been added during a renovation by the previous owner.
Daniel entered.
Nothing looked unusual.
Noah followed cautiously.
"There."
He pointed toward the rear wall.
A large wardrobe cabinet stood against it.
Daniel frowned.
"That's built in."
"No, it moves."
Noah walked toward the side panel and reached behind a hanging row of coats.
He pressed something.
A soft mechanical click sounded.
Daniel stared.
The wardrobe shifted several inches away from the wall.
Behind it was a narrow door.
Daniel felt suddenly cold.
He had lived in this house six years.
He had never known the door existed.
Ramirez opened it.
The hidden room was barely eight feet deep.
Inside stood a small desk.
On it were two monitors.
One was dark.
The other still glowed.
Four camera feeds appeared on the screen.
Kitchen.
Dining room.
Upstairs hallway.
Emily's bedroom.
Daniel stopped breathing.
"No."
Noah stood behind him.
"I told you."
Ramirez raised a hand.
"No one touch anything."
Another officer entered to photograph the equipment.
Daniel stared at the image of Emily's empty bedroom.
He could see her bed.
Her desk.
Her closet.
The stuffed rabbit she slept with every night.
Someone had been watching her.
Inside his own house.
Daniel looked toward Margaret's bedroom beyond the hidden doorway.
For years, his mother had told him she worried about Emily.
She said Emily needed discipline.
She said the girl had inherited Sarah's stubbornness.
Daniel had dismissed it as generational disagreement.
Now he understood that Margaret had not merely disliked his daughter.
She had created a system around her.
A system of surveillance.
Control.
Fear.
Ramirez pointed at a small digital recorder beneath the monitors.
"This may contain stored footage."
Noah spoke quietly.
"It does."
Daniel looked at him.
"How do you know?"
"I saw Grandma watch it."
"When?"
"When you went to Boston."
Three months earlier.
Daniel remembered that trip.
Four days.
He had called home every night.
Claire had always answered.
She had told him the children were asleep.
Noah continued.
"Grandma would come in here after Emily went to bed."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"What did she watch?"
"Everything."
The word hung in the room.
Ramirez turned toward the officer beside her.
"Secure the recorder."
Then she looked at Daniel.
"This is going to need detectives."
Daniel nodded numbly.
Downstairs, voices rose.
Claire was shouting.
"You can't search this house!"
Ramirez moved toward the door.
Daniel followed.
By the time they reached the dining room, Claire was arguing with another officer.
Margaret stood silently nearby.
She looked toward Daniel.
For the first time in his life, he saw uncertainty in his mother's eyes.
Not guilt.
Not remorse.
Uncertainty.
She had lost control of the room.
Daniel approached her.
"How long?"
Margaret said nothing.
"How long were you watching Emily?"
"You don't understand."
"Then explain it."
Margaret looked toward the officers.
"This family was falling apart."
Daniel almost laughed.
"You chained a child under a table."
"I was trying to save this family."
"From what?"
Margaret's eyes went toward Emily.
That was when Daniel understood.
It was not random.
Whatever had happened had always been about Emily specifically.
"Why her?"
Margaret's lips tightened.
Daniel stepped closer.
"Why Emily?"
Claire suddenly shouted from across the room.
"Don't answer him!"
Everyone turned.
Margaret stared at Claire.
Claire immediately seemed to realize she had spoken too quickly.
Daniel looked between them.
His anger changed into suspicion.
There was something more.
Something both women knew.
Ramirez noticed it too.
"Mrs. Carter," she said to Claire, "you need to remain silent unless you're answering one of our questions."
Claire folded her arms.
But her face had gone pale.
Daniel looked at Noah.
His son was staring at the phone again.
"What is it?"
Noah scrolled backward.
"There was one video I didn't understand."
Daniel approached him.
Noah opened a recording dated seventeen days earlier.
The footage had been taken from behind a partially open door.
Margaret and Claire were speaking in the kitchen.
At first the audio was faint.
Then Margaret's voice became clear.
"Once Daniel signs the papers, it won't matter what the girl says."
Daniel's heart stopped.
Claire answered on the recording.
"And if he refuses?"
Margaret's response came immediately.
"Then we make sure Emily gives him a reason not to."
The video ended.
Daniel stared at the black screen.
"What papers?"
Noah shook his head.
"I don't know."
Daniel slowly looked toward Margaret.
His mother no longer met his eyes.
Police lights continued flashing across the broken dining room.
The chain still lay under the table.
But suddenly Daniel understood something terrifying.
Tonight had not merely exposed cruelty.
May you like
It had interrupted a plan.
And somewhere inside the house, there were papers Margaret believed were worth terrorizing a six-year-old child over.
