Chapter 3 - THE ENVELOPE IN MARIA'S BAG

For the next ten minutes, Alex barely moved. The estate's security room had no windows, but he suddenly felt exposed.
Every camera feed seemed to show a different version of his failure: his daughters frightened in their own home, Maria protecting them while being framed, Claire moving through rooms Alex owned as if she already controlled them.
Daniel broke the silence first. "We need the envelope." Alex nodded. "If Maria finds it before we do," Daniel continued, "she may panic. If Claire put stolen property or documents inside, Maria could destroy evidence without realizing it."
Alex looked toward the live feed from the laundry corridor. "Can you get her away from the room?" Daniel considered it. "I can trigger a maintenance alert at the pool equipment panel. Maria usually checks anything related to the girls' areas."
"Do it." Three minutes later, a soft alarm chimed in the service hall. Maria left the laundry room and walked toward the back terrace. Daniel guided Alex through the lower corridor and up a narrow staff staircase.
They moved quickly but quietly, staying outside every camera angle Claire might be watching through the estate's household tablet.
Alex had entered the laundry room hundreds of times without noticing how small it felt. Maria's bag sat inside an open locker. He hated touching it. The act felt like one more betrayal, even if his purpose had changed.
Daniel wore gloves. He removed the cream envelope and placed it on the folding counter. There was no name written on the front. Inside were eight hundred dollars in cash, Claire's missing perfume, and a printed photograph.
Alex stared at the photograph. It showed Maria meeting a man outside a coffee shop in West Hollywood. The image had been taken from a distance. On the back, someone had written in black ink: ASK HER WHO HE IS.
"Do you recognize him?" Daniel asked. Alex did. His name was Thomas Velez, a private investigator Rachel had once hired during a corporate harassment case. After Rachel died, Alex had kept Thomas on retainer for occasional background checks.
"Why would Maria meet him?" Daniel examined the photo. "We should ask Thomas before we ask Maria." Alex took out his phone. Thomas answered on the third ring. "Alex?" "Where are you?" A pause. "Downtown. Why?"
"Did you meet Maria Alvarez last week?" The silence that followed lasted too long. Alex's voice hardened. "Thomas." "Yes." "Why?" "I can't tell you over the phone." "Then get here." "Alex, listen to me—" "Get here."
Thomas arrived forty minutes later through the same service entrance Alex had used. He was in his early fifties, compact, gray-haired, and normally impossible to rattle.
The moment he entered the security room and saw Daniel beside the monitors, he understood that whatever secrecy he had been protecting was over.
Alex placed the photograph on the desk. "Start talking." Thomas studied it. "Where did you get this?" "Claire put it in Maria's bag." That answer changed him. He exhaled slowly and sat down. "Then Claire knows more than I thought."
Alex stepped closer. "More about what?" Thomas looked at him. "Maria contacted me six weeks ago." "Why?" "Because she was worried about Emma and Lily." Alex felt shame rise again, hot and immediate. Thomas continued. "She said Claire behaved differently when you traveled.
Nothing severe enough at first to prove abuse. Controlling language. Isolation. Threats about sending Maria away. Telling the girls their father would stop loving them if they caused problems before the wedding."
Alex closed his eyes for one second. "Why didn't Maria tell me?" "She tried." Alex opened his eyes. Thomas reached into his jacket and removed a slim folder. Inside were photocopies of three emails Maria had sent to Alex's private address.
Alex had never seen them. Each email was restrained, almost painfully cautious. Maria described changes in the girls' behavior whenever Claire stayed at the house alone with them. She asked for a private conversation.
She specifically wrote that she did not want to accuse anyone unfairly, only to make sure Alex was aware.
The replies came from Alex's account. Maria, thank you for your concern. Claire has my full trust. Please respect family boundaries. Alex read the line twice. "I didn't send this." Thomas nodded. "Maria guessed that." Another reply was harsher.
Your role is household support. Do not involve yourself in parenting decisions again. Alex looked at Daniel. "Could Claire access my email?" Daniel's expression darkened. "If she had your tablet or knew your passcode." Alex remembered leaving his personal tablet charging in the library during dinners.
Claire often stayed there after he went upstairs with the girls.
Thomas continued. "Maria met me because she wanted advice on documenting what was happening without violating your privacy or frightening the children." "And the trust accounts?" Thomas hesitated. Alex leaned forward. "What about them?" "That part came later."
Thomas opened the folder again and removed a copy of a legal document. It was a draft petition for a family trust amendment. Alex recognized the names at once: Emma Rachel Mercer and Lily Anne Mercer.
At the bottom of the page was a proposed change to successor trustee authority after Alex's marriage. The document would not automatically transfer the girls' money to Claire. It was more subtle than that.
It expanded emergency management authority to a future spouse if Alex became incapacitated.
"Where did you get this?" Alex asked. "Maria found a copy in the library printer tray." Alex read the legal language again. "I never authorized this." "Your attorney didn't draft it," Thomas said. "I checked informally."
Daniel swore under his breath.
Alex's mind moved backward through the last six months: Claire asking casual questions about estate planning, suggesting they update emergency documents before the wedding, laughing that billionaires were "romantic only after their lawyers approved it." At the time, it had sounded practical.
Now every sentence had a second edge. "Who prepared it?" Alex asked. Thomas pointed to a small footer code. "Shell legal service connected to a Nevada corporation. The corporation traces to Grant." Alex's stomach turned. The security room door suddenly opened.
All three men looked up. Maria stood there. Her face was pale. She looked at the photograph, the open folder, and the envelope on the desk. Then she looked at Alex. For a moment, no one spoke.
Finally, Maria said, "You came back." Alex nodded. Her eyes filled, but not with relief. With disappointment. "You thought it was me." The words were quiet. That made them worse.
Alex tried to answer, but nothing he could say was large enough to cover what he had done.
Maria looked toward the wall of monitors. On one of them, Claire was walking down the upstairs hallway toward Emma's room. In her hand was Alex's private tablet. Daniel moved first. "She's accessing something." The monitor changed.

Claire entered the schoolroom, closed the door, and called the girls toward her. Then she set Alex's tablet on the desk and said, "Your father left me a message for you." Emma's face went white before Claire even pressed play.
And Alex realized the trap was no longer meant only for Maria. It was meant for his daughters.
