Chapter 7 - THE CAMERA ABOVE THE WATER

The unedited security footage began with a view of the indoor pool, shining under the chandeliers. Guests moved around the dessert table, unaware that the camera would soon become essential to a family.
In Maya's office, a forensic video specialist explained the files' origin and preservation history. The off-site provider's records documented when the clip was uploaded and when a deletion request had been rejected.
Nora sat with her hands clasped beneath the table. Luis occupied the chair beside her. Neither spoke as the specialist began playback on a large monitor.
At first, Benji appeared as a little blue figure beside the dessert cart. He reached for its top rail while Grant stood above him on the ramp.
The ceiling camera had no useful audio, but its angle showed Grant's foot against the cart's metal base. He pushed once, then again, after Benji's hands had already begun to slip.
Nora's breath stopped. She had known what happened, yet witnessing it without the rush of adrenaline made the cruelty harder to endure. Grant's movements were deliberate and unhurried.
The cart accelerated. Cakes fell. Benji disappeared into the debris. Only then did the open door at the far end of the hall admit Nora, running toward her brother.
The camera followed the rescue in a fixed, merciless frame. Nora saw herself drag Benji aside before the cart fell into the water, its impact breaking the pool's smooth surface.
A second camera angle showed Grant approach. The slap was unmistakable. So was the metal umbrella handle, lifted toward Nora before she stepped aside and pushed him backward.
Maya paused the video before the final fall. “This provides context,” she said. “It doesn't replace witness testimony or the legal process, but it contradicts the story he's been telling.”
Luis stared at the screen. “I should have stopped the party when he put the child on that ramp,” he said. His voice had the rough edge of a confession.
“You didn't push the cart,” Nora replied. “You helped shut down the electrical danger and preserved what you saw. Keep telling the truth. That's what Benji needs.”
The specialist prepared a documented copy for authorized investigators, retaining the original files and verification records. Maya asked Nora not to distribute the footage publicly while the case was being evaluated.
Nora agreed. She had considered posting it herself every time someone repeated Grant's accusation. Yet the idea of strangers replaying Benji's terrified fall made her stomach turn.
“Can the court see it without the whole internet seeing it?” she asked. Maya explained that protective procedures might limit unnecessary exposure, though she could not promise total privacy.
Their next meeting concerned the foundation. Eleanor Price arrived carrying an accountant's preliminary report and a face lined with sleeplessness. The charity's name was printed neatly across the cover.
“The transfers are worse than we suspected,” she said. “Several invoices reference sites where no work occurred. The same payment accounts appear in agreements tied to Grant's holding company.”
Aldercrest Development had issued elaborate progress reports. Those reports listed classroom construction, equipment purchases, and training programs. Independent inspections found empty lots and locked commercial units instead.
Nora imagined the children who might have used those classrooms. Grant had stood beside donation banners at the pool party while the foundation's promises remained unopened doors in distant neighborhoods.
Claire joined the meeting by secure video call. She listened while Eleanor explained that auditors would provide findings to law enforcement and relevant regulators for formal review.
“I want the fund protected before anything else,” Claire said. “Freeze questionable payments. Keep the staff paid. And tell our legitimate partner schools we're not abandoning them.”
Her voice was still slower than before the accident, but the decisions were hers. Eleanor confirmed that the independent trustees had authority to take emergency oversight measures.
The board suspended Grant's ability to authorize foundation spending while the review proceeded. He immediately sent a letter denying wrongdoing and threatening civil action for damage to his reputation.
Later, Nora received an envelope delivered by courier. Inside was a photograph from a summer picnic: Benji asleep against Claire, Nora smiling beside them, Grant standing at the frame's edge.
On the back, in Grant's handwriting, were six words: WE COULD STILL KEEP THIS PRIVATE. There was no direct threat, which made the message feel more calculated.
Maya advised Nora to preserve the envelope and avoid responding. Any proposal about family arrangements would go through counsel, not through photographs or pressure delivered to her home.
That night, Benji asked whether Nora could help him send Claire a drawing. He had sketched a house with a blue front door and an oversized sun above the roof.
“Can we put a lock on the door?” he asked. Nora nodded. “Yes, and people will knock. You get to know who's coming in.”
He looked at the paper, considering. “Mom can have a key. And you.” He added two golden squares beside the drawing of the front steps.
Nora felt the scene's simplicity settle around her. Grant had treated doors, money, and permission as things he alone controlled. Benji was beginning to imagine a different arrangement.
Before bedtime, Dana called with news of the upcoming protective hearing. Independent reports, witness statements, and authenticated portions of the recording could be presented through the appropriate process.
Benji would not be asked to stand before a room full of adults and explain his worst night unless a specific legal need arose, with safeguards considered for his age.
Nora thanked her. When she hung up, Benji was already asleep beside the unfinished drawing. His shoulders relaxed beneath the blanket in a way she had not seen at Glasswater House.
In the quiet apartment, Nora finally let herself look toward the future. There might be hearings, accusations, and months of rebuilding. But Benji had slept without apologizing for anything.
The next morning, Maya called with one last development. Grant had submitted a document claiming Claire had authorized him to sell Glasswater House while she recovered.

The document carried Claire's signature. It was dated on a day when her medical notes recorded that she could barely hold a pen. Nora felt the old familiar dread return.
“What happens now?” she asked. Maya's answer came without hesitation. “Now we challenge that paper before he can use it. And we let your mother speak for herself.”
