Chapter 8 - FRIDAY AT 2:37

At 2:37 p.m., Julian Vance heard the soft click of a medication tray opening beside his bed. He kept his eyes closed. The nurse spoke first. “I need everyone to step back.” Chloe did not move. “Just do it.” Marcus hissed, “Do not speak to staff like that.” “They’re being paid enough.” Bryce Kent stood near the monitor, checking the hall through the glass panel. “We have seven minutes before the next scheduled security pass.” The sentence entered the hidden recorder clearly. Anthony muttered, “Why seven?” “Because I made it seven.”

Julian felt something cold brush the IV port taped to his arm. Inside the service passage, Elena’s fingers closed around the emergency release handle. Mara had ordered her not to enter unless the agreed signal occurred: three rapid changes in Julian’s heart rate or a direct threat that could not wait. The monitor beeped steadily. Julian breathed slowly. The nurse prepared the line. Marcus opened his legal folder and removed two documents. “Chloe, once the event is called, you sign here as domestic beneficiary witness. Anthony signs the trustee acknowledgment. I’ll file electronically.” Anthony’s voice shook. “This is insane.”

Chloe turned on him. “You cut the brakes.” The room stopped breathing. In the service passage, Elena’s eyes widened. Anthony whispered, furious, “Keep your voice down.” “You wanted him dead before I did.” “I wanted control of the company. You’re the one who insisted the crash had to look fatal.” Marcus snapped, “Enough.” Every word was being recorded. Julian’s rage surged so violently that his heart rate climbed. One spike. Elena watched the remote monitor in the supply room. The nurse lifted the syringe. Chloe said, “After today, none of this matters.” Two spikes.

Bryce leaned over Julian. “Increase the dose if he reacts.” Three. Elena pulled the release. The service door slammed open. Everyone turned. Elena stepped into the room. For a fraction of a second, the conspirators simply stared. She was the last person they expected because she was the person they had trained themselves not to see. “What are you doing here?” Bryce demanded. Elena looked at the nurse. “Step away from him.” Chloe laughed once in disbelief. “Get her out.” Anthony moved toward Elena. The main door opened. Detective Mara Chen entered with two officers behind her. “Don’t,” Mara said.

Anthony stopped. Bryce’s face changed first. The polished administrator vanished, replaced by a man calculating exits. He reached toward his pocket. “Hands where I can see them,” Mara ordered. Bryce obeyed. Marcus recovered faster. “Detective, this is a private medical matter. You have no authority to interrupt treatment.” Mara held up a warrant. “I have more authority than you’re going to enjoy reading.” Chloe looked toward Julian. The room had shifted too quickly for her to understand. Her gaze moved from the officers to Elena, then to the hidden camera Mara revealed near the flower arrangement. “No,” Chloe whispered.

Marcus went pale. Anthony backed toward the window. The nurse began crying. Mara approached the medication tray. “Nobody touches anything.” Adrian entered behind the officers. “That medication is not authorized by me.” Bryce said, “We can explain.” “Good,” Mara replied. “You’ll have time.” Chloe’s eyes remained on Julian. Then, slowly, Julian opened his eyes. She stopped breathing. Anthony made a sound like a man struck in the chest. Marcus dropped one sheet of paper. Bryce stared. Julian looked at each of them before speaking. His voice was weak but clear. “Seven minutes,” he said. “That’s what you gave yourselves?”

Chloe staggered backward. “You—” “I heard everything.” Her face collapsed through disbelief, fear, and fury. “You were awake?” “For five days.” Anthony pointed at Adrian. “This is entrapment.” Mara gave him a flat look. “No one asked you to confess to cutting brakes.” Anthony’s mouth shut. Chloe turned toward Elena. The hatred in her face was almost physical. “You did this.” Elena’s hands trembled, but she did not look away. “You did this. I just stopped pretending I couldn’t hear.” For the first time since entering Julian’s life, Chloe had no performance ready.

Marcus attempted one last maneuver. “Anything recorded here is protected by medical privacy.” Mara answered, “Not the conspiracy to commit murder.” Adrian disconnected Julian’s IV line entirely and replaced it with a fresh setup from a sealed kit. His hands were steady, but anger sharpened every movement. Officers separated the conspirators. The nurse immediately asked for an attorney. Bryce demanded to call hospital counsel. Anthony began insisting he had been manipulated. Marcus said nothing else. Chloe remained near the wall. She looked at Julian with tears gathering in her eyes. This time, they seemed real. “I loved you,” she said.

Julian studied her. “No,” he answered. “You loved the door you thought I opened.” She flinched. Officers led Anthony out first. As he passed the bed, he turned. “You think this ends with us?” Mara grabbed his arm more firmly. “Keep walking.” Julian’s attention sharpened. Anthony looked over his shoulder. “You still don’t know who gave the order.” Then he was gone. The words left a stain in the room. Chloe heard them too. Her face shifted. Julian saw it. Not confusion. Recognition. Before Mara could question her, Chloe pressed her lips together and asked for counsel.

At 3:11 p.m., the room was finally quiet. The new Vance trust structure would become irrevocable in forty-nine minutes. Mara stood beside the bed. “We have enough to hold them.” “Not enough to finish it,” Julian said. “No.” Elena sat in the chair near the window, suddenly pale with delayed shock. Adrian handed her water. Julian looked at the clock. 3:12. Then his phone vibrated beneath the blanket. A message appeared from an unknown number. YOU CAUGHT THE HANDS. NOT THE HEAD. Attached was a photograph of Raymond Vance entering St. Brigid Garage three days before the crash.
