Chapter 6 - THE VOICE IN THE SAFE

The recording began with traffic noise and Elena clearing her throat.
She stated the date, named the foundation accounts she had copied, and said she feared Beatriz and Victor were stealing money intended for children's rehabilitation. Her voice sounded steady until she mentioned Alejandro.
“He thinks Beatriz is helping me,” Elena said. “I haven't shown him the transfers yet. I want the documents in front of us when I do.”
Alejandro listened from the far end of the evidence room, holding the arms of his chair.
Elena did not claim someone had tried to kill her. She said only that the brakes felt wrong and that she would have them examined.
The final seconds recorded the click of a door and her whispered instruction to an unseen visitor: “Keep the copies separate.”
The voice of the visitor was faint. An audio specialist could improve clarity but would not guess an identity from a damaged recording.
Salvatierra compared the file's date with the original device, storage log, and Elena's schedule before allowing a working copy to circulate.
Alejandro asked to hear it once more. In the second playback, he recognized the sound of Elena's breath before she decided to say something painful.
She had been alive, frightened, and doing work he might have helped with if he had listened sooner.
Clara was told about the recording without being required to hear it.
She had met Elena only twice, during interviews for the household job, but remembered a woman who asked whether staff could leave work on time and meant to wait for the answer.
Beatriz's attorney learned the investigators had a recording and requested that his client be allowed to respond. During a formally recorded interview, Beatriz admitted taking foundation papers.
She claimed she was gathering proof that Victor had cheated Elena and denied knowing about the false invoices.
When asked about the pool, she changed her account again. This time she said she had released the wheel lock to move the stroller and lost her balance.
Salvatierra played the original footage with synchronized sound. She stared at the screen until the whispered sentence filled the room.
“I didn't mean to say that,” she answered. “I was angry.” The inspector asked why she had blamed Clara.
Beatriz lowered her eyes, then asked for counsel. The interview stopped. Her evasions were recorded, but no confession supplied the missing details of Elena's crash.
Victor remained at large. Officers traced the rental sedan's coffee cup to a man who had done driving jobs for Meridian.
He identified Victor as the person who paid him to watch Inés's street. He claimed his instructions were surveillance only, with no threat to Clara.
Salvatierra warned Clara that a witness's claim did not guarantee safety. Police offered to move her temporarily to a protected address.
Inés could accompany her, but both women would need to leave their routines. Clara hesitated over the cost to Inés's life.
“My life includes you,” Inés said, setting down her grocery bag. They packed two small cases. Teresa took over watering the window plants and promised to collect the mail.
Clara left the blue door behind with a long look, unwilling to let a stranger decide whether she could return.
Alejandro heard about the move from the inspector and did not ask where she had gone.
He signed the paperwork preserving her position until she decided what she wanted, then asked an outside workplace investigator to review how Beatriz had treated the staff.
The review unearthed complaints about withheld days off, threats of dismissal, and staff ordered to sign inaccurate time sheets. Alejandro released back pay through an independent administrator.
Teresa accepted hers with a tired expression. “It took a child in the water for you to check,” she said.
“Yes,” Alejandro replied. There was no defense for it. Teresa went back to the nursery and showed Mateo how to tap a soft wooden block against the rug.
Her loyalty to the baby did not require making Alejandro comfortable.
The audio specialist recovered two intelligible words from the visitor's voice: “I will.” It was a woman's voice, but could not reliably be matched to anyone.
Investigators checked the storage gate log and found an entry under Marisol's name on the recording date.
Marisol confirmed she had visited Elena after work to deliver attendance copies. She had not known about the recorder.
Salvatierra checked her shift records and access card, then treated her as a corroborating witness, not as a suspect because her voice appeared on tape.
The recovered files established that Elena had documented the fraud before her death. The question of who altered her brakes still depended on an earlier physical act.
Rafael's photographs, Luis's account, and the recovered message formed a path toward proof, but Victor's location remained unknown.
That night Mateo woke crying from a tooth pushing through his gum. Alejandro sat on the nursery floor until the baby settled against him.
Beyond the window the pool had been drained for repairs, leaving a pale empty rectangle under the security lights.

His phone displayed an unsent message to Clara. He erased it. An apology might matter one day, when she chose to hear it.
Sending it now would ask her to carry his guilt while she was still trying to sleep without fear. He put the phone away and held his son.
