Chapter 6 - THE MAN WHO KNEW THE TRUST

The investigation widened quietly. Daniel advised Julian and Mariana not to confront Preston Hale. Instead, they turned over the recovered emails, device logs, draft power of attorney, and Chloe's preliminary statement to investigators. For several days, nothing seemed to happen.

Preston continued practicing law. Evelyn remained in a luxury hotel downtown, issuing terse statements through counsel. Chloe moved into Grant's apartment, though Grant reportedly spent more nights elsewhere.

Then Priya Shah found an encrypted folder on Evelyn's tablet.

It had been deleted twice.

The folder contained scanned copies of old Vance family trust documents, including pages that had never been stored at the mansion. Those documents came from Preston's office.

More troubling, several scans contained handwritten notes in the margins identifying provisions that might be used to argue Julian lacked capacity to manage certain assets if he became "financially compromised through spousal influence."

Julian read the phrase three times.

"Spousal influence," he said. "Meaning Mariana."

Daniel nodded. "It appears someone considered creating a record that your wife was manipulating you."

Mariana sat at the conference table with her arms folded. "That explains the photographs, the fake foundation narrative, and the documents about my supposed instability. They were building two stories at once. I was irresponsible, and Julian was under my influence."

Julian's mouth went dry. "So if they could control my power of attorney..."

"They could isolate both of you," Daniel said.

The motive remained less clear. Evelyn had money. She had a generous trust distribution, a paid-off condominium, and access to family resources Julian had never questioned. Why risk everything for more control?

The answer came from Chloe.

She asked to meet Mariana alone.

Julian objected at first, then caught himself. Mariana did not need his permission. She met Chloe at Daniel's office with a recording agreement and counsel present.

Chloe arrived without makeup, her hair tied back, her designer polish replaced by exhaustion. She sat across from Mariana and spent nearly five minutes staring at the table.

"I was jealous of you," she said finally.

Mariana did not respond.

Chloe swallowed. "You had the house. Julian listened to you. Dad respected you before he died. Mom hated that."

"Your mother said she liked me."

"Mom likes people she can place beneath her."

Mariana's expression tightened.

Chloe continued. "After Dad died, Mom found out he had changed part of his estate plan. He left a larger charitable bequest than she expected. She blamed you because you had helped him review the foundation structure."

"I answered questions about tax consequences."

"I know that now."

Chloe rubbed her hands together. "Preston told Mom there might be a way to challenge some of Dad's decisions if Julian supported her. Julian never would. So Preston started telling her that you controlled Julian."

Mariana leaned forward slightly. "When?"

"Almost two years ago."

The timeline changed everything.

The knee surgery had not started the plan. It had merely created access to the house.

Chloe described dinners where Preston encouraged Evelyn to "document concerns" about Mariana. He told her that if Julian's marriage deteriorated, certain trust amendments could be revisited. He hinted that if Mariana left the estate, Evelyn might argue that family property was being mismanaged.

"Why would Preston care?" Mariana asked.

Chloe's face crumpled. "Because Mom owed him money."

The debt was not personal legal fees.

Evelyn had invested heavily in a private real estate fund Preston helped organize. The fund had collapsed. She lost nearly four million dollars, much of it money Julian did not know she had borrowed against future trust distributions.

Preston feared scrutiny of the investment structure. Evelyn feared exposure. Both needed liquidity, and the mansion looked like an asset large enough to solve their problems.

Except Evelyn did not own it.

Mariana did.

Chloe began to cry. "Mom told me if we sold the property before Julian came home for good, the trust could buy another house and no one would lose anything. She said you would get a settlement eventually."

Mariana's voice remained controlled. "So you took my bedroom."

Chloe covered her face. "I thought if you left, it would be easier."

"Easier for whom?"

No answer came.

Later that day, investigators executed a warrant on Preston's office.

The news broke locally within hours. Television trucks appeared outside the law firm. Vance Medical's communications team begged Julian to issue a statement. He refused to turn Mariana's abuse into corporate reputation management.

Instead, he went home.

He found her in the backyard near the old stone fountain, reading case files under the oak trees.

"Chloe told the truth," he said.

"Some of it."

"You do not trust her."

"I trust records."

Julian almost smiled. "That sounds like you."

"It used to."

The words reminded him how much of herself she had hidden simply to survive.

They sat in silence.

After a while Julian said, "I am reducing my travel."

Mariana looked at him. "For me?"

"For myself. And because I built a company that collapses into panic if I am not on an airplane every week. That is bad leadership."

"That sounds like your therapist."

"It is."

She smiled faintly.

He continued. "I am appointing a chief operating officer. I am stepping away from day-to-day sales."

Mariana studied him. "You love the chase."

"I loved being needed."

There it was. The truth he had avoided for years.

At work, Julian was essential. At home, he had assumed love would wait patiently for whatever remained of him.

Mariana closed the file in her lap.

"Why are you telling me this?"

"Because whether you stay with me or not, I do not want to be that man anymore."

For a long moment, she said nothing.

Then her phone rang.

Daniel.

She answered, listened, and slowly stood.

"What is it?" Julian asked.

Mariana looked at him, face pale.

"They found a second deed in Preston's office."

Julian rose.

"A forged one?" he asked.

"No," she said.

Her voice dropped.

"An original."

May you like

She stared toward the mansion behind them.

"And according to Daniel, it changes who owned this land before I ever bought it."
