Chapter 2 - Cold Blood on Polished Marble

The silence lasted for three heartbeats before pandemonium consumed the lobby.
Women in couture gowns began screaming hysterically; security guards fumbled for their holsters and walkie-talkies; and photographers from the press pen surged forward, flashes exploding like lightning strikes in the dark.
"Back off! EVERYBODY GET THE HELL BACK!"
Daniel’s voice cut through the chaos like a whip crack. He struggled onto his right knee, keeping his left arm pinned helplessly against his torso. His shoulder joint was visibly shifted out of its socket, bulging unnaturally beneath his torn cotton shirt, but his eyes were blazing with adrenaline.
"Get an ambulance!" Daniel roared at the stunned hotel manager, who was standing frozen behind the mahogany reception desk. "Code red trauma! Level one obstetrics unit! Move your damn feet!"
The manager blinked, snapped out of his trance, and scrambled for the landline.
Emily clung to the fabric of Daniel's shirt, her knuckles white. "Daniel... she pushed me. Daniel, she did it on purpose. She looked right at me and smiled before she pushed."
"I know, Em. I saw it," Daniel said softly, leaning down to shield her face from the flashing cameras of the paparazzi who were already crawling over velvet ropes like vultures. "Keep your eyes on me. Breathe slow. In through your nose, out through your mouth. Don't look at the crowd. Just look at me."
"My stomach hurts... it feels tight, Danny," Emily wept, her breathing shallow and ragged.
Cold fear pierced Daniel’s heart. *Placental abruption.* Even if he had broken the physical impact with the floor, the violent deceleration could still cause internal shearing. Every second Emily spent on this floor increased the risk of losing both her and his niece.
Suddenly, heavy footsteps clattered across the marble.
Julian Sterling pushed through the throng of onlookers. His tuxedo was slightly rumpled, his silk tie loosened, his handsome, patrician face drained of all color. Behind him followed two towering men in identical navy suits—the Sterling private security detail.
"Emily! My God, Emily!" Julian dropped to his knees beside them, his hands hovering frantically over his wife, seemingly terrified to touch her. "What happened?! Someone said she fell over the rail! How did this happen?!"
Daniel's jaw clenched so hard a tendon threatened to snap. He stared at his brother-in-law, analyzing every micro-expression. Julian looked genuinely horrified, his hands trembling as he reached for Emily’s face. But Daniel knew this family too well; the Sterlings were master actors who treated morality like a negotiable contract.
"She didn't fall, Julian," Daniel said, his voice dropping to a gravelly, lethal cadence.
Julian looked up, blinking. "What? What are you talking about? Of course she fell, the wheelchair must have rolled—"
"Your mother pushed her," Daniel stated, each word hammered flat like cold steel. "She wheeled her to the balustrade, unhitched the brake, and threw her over."
Julian’s face froze. Then, a dark, defensive cloud crossed his eyes. "That’s insane. Daniel, you're in shock. You don't know what you're saying. My mother loves Emily! She would never—"
"I WATCHED HER DO IT!" Daniel snarled, lunging forward with his good arm and seizing Julian by the lapels of his thousand-dollar tuxedo. The fabric tore with a loud rip. "I saw her hands on the chair, Julian! I saw her watch Emily drop! And while my sister was screaming in mid-air, your mother turned her back and ran like a rat into the kitchen corridor!"
The two private security guards immediately closed in, their hands hovering near their jackets. "Step away from Mr. Sterling, sir," the lead guard warned, his voice low and threatening.
"Touch me and I’ll snap your windpipe before you clear leather," Daniel whispered back, not breaking eye contact with Julian.
Julian looked down at Emily, his voice cracking with desperation. "Emily... tell me he’s mistaken. Tell me you just slipped."
Emily looked up at the man she had loved for three years—the heir to a pharmaceutical and real estate empire worth billions. She saw the familiar, sickening weakness in his eyes. The desperate need to preserve his mother’s image, to preserve the Sterling name at all costs.
"She looked me in the eyes, Julian," Emily sobbed, her voice breaking through the noise of the approaching sirens outside. "She told me I was going to disappear. And then she shoved me. Your mother tried to murder your daughter."
Julian recoiled as if slapped across the face.
Outside, the wail of sirens reached a deafening crescendo. Four paramedics carrying heavy trauma bags and a collapsible stretcher burst through the revolving glass doors, accompanied by two armed metropolitan police officers.
"Make way! Emergency personnel!" the lead paramedic shouted, dropping beside Emily and immediately opening a diagnostic monitor. "Ma'am, keep still. We're going to put a cervical collar on you. Pulse is 140, tachycardic. Let's get fetal Doppler on her right now!"
The lobby descended into an organized hurricane of medical efficiency. Daniel stood back, his body finally beginning to register the excruciating trauma of his dislocated shoulder. His vision pulsed with white-hot needles, but he refused to sit.
As the paramedics transferred Emily onto the gurney, Daniel noticed a subtle movement near the grand staircase.
Standing on the third step, partially hidden behind an imported marble urn, was Arthur Vance—no, Arthur Sterling, Margaret’s personal attorney and the architect of every non-disclosure agreement the family had ever bought. Beside him was Margaret herself, wrapped in a dark cashmere trench coat that hid her gala dress. She was speaking rapidly into Arthur's ear, her manicured finger pointing toward the mezzanine ceiling cameras.
Arthur gave a curt nod, pulled out his encrypted phone, and headed toward the hotel management back-offices.
*The security tapes,* Daniel realized with a jolt of ice in his veins.
They weren't just trying to manage PR. Margaret was moving to destroy the only objective evidence of her attempted murder before the police could issue a warrant.
"Danny!" Emily cried out from the gurney as they wheeled her toward the double glass doors. "Don't leave me!"
Daniel looked at his sister, then back at the staircase where Margaret was currently slipping into a waiting private limousine in the underground parking drive.
"I'm right behind you, Em," Daniel said, gritting his teeth as he forcefully slammed his dislocated shoulder against the hard stone edge of the pillar.
A sickening *crunch* echoed in his skull as the humeral head slipped back into its socket. Daniel choked down a howl of agony, cold sweat soaking his forehead. He wiped the blood from his mouth with the back of his hand, turned to Julian, and leaned in close.
"Take care of her at the hospital," Daniel whispered, his breath hot against Julian’s ear. "Because if anything happens to my sister or that baby... there is nowhere on this earth your mother's money will be able to hide her from me."
May you like
Without waiting for a reply, Daniel turned on his heel and stalked toward the hotel's subterranean surveillance hub.
