Chapter 20 - The Voice Behind the Nursery Wall

Julian took a step forward, raising the crowbar. "Don't test me, old woman. I will bash your skull against these stones and take what’s mine."
"Julian," a voice rasped from the floor.
Julian paused, glancing down at Clara.
Clara was pale as bone, her hands trembling, but in her right hand, she held the micro-cassette recorder Martha had given her. Her finger rested firmly on the red play button.
"You forgot one thing," Clara whispered, blood trickling from her lower lip.
"What could you possibly have, Clara? You’re bleeding out. You won't last twenty minutes."
Clara pressed the button.
A crackle of static hissed through the tiny speaker. Then, a voice filled the stone chamber—clear, unmistakable, and vibrating with terror:
*"Julian, please... don't do this. I signed the transfer. The money is yours. Why are you cutting the lines?"*
Then came Julian’s voice, recorded two months ago, laughing softly:
*"Because Ethan... as long as you're alive, Father will always look at you with love. And I need Blackwood to burn completely before I build my new empire."*
Morrison’s eyes went wide. He dropped the clipboard. "Julian... you said there was no recording. You said Ethan died without speaking to anyone!"
"Shut up, Morrison!" Julian screamed, his composure shattering into frantic panic.
"It’s linked to the cloud, Julian," Clara lied, her voice stone-cold. "The moment Martha entered this shack, the signal uploaded to the state police server in New Haven. They know."
Julian’s face twisted into an expression of pure, unbridled madness. He raised the crowbar high above his head, aiming directly for Clara’s temple. "Then we all die tonight!"
He lunged forward.
Before the iron bar could fall, Eleanor Vance didn't scream. She didn't cower.
She hurled the heavy iron marlinspike straight into Julian’s throat.
The rusted spike drove deep into his flesh. Julian gasped, his eyes bulging as dark arterial blood erupted from his neck, spraying across Clara’s face and soaking the newborn’s blanket. The crowbar clattered harmlessly to the stone floor.
Julian stumbled backward, choking on his own blood, clawing at the metal protruding from his neck. He stepped out through the ruined doorway, tripping over the wet granite ledge.
With a muffled, gurgling cry, Julian vanished backward into the black, howling abyss of the Atlantic ocean below.
Silence descended upon the shack, save for the shrieking wind and the steady, rhythmic crying of the baby.
Morrison turned and fled into the storm, his footsteps disappearing into the black marsh.
Eleanor slowly sank to her knees beside Clara, gently placing the warm, crying infant onto Clara’s bare chest.
"It’s over," Eleanor whispered, collapsing against the stone wall, her breath coming in shallow, rattling gasps. "The curse... is over."
Clara clutched her baby girl against her skin, feeling the wild, fragile beat of her daughter’s heart. Warm tears blurred her vision as she kissed the child's damp, dark hair.
Then, from the bottom of the black cliff, deep within the churning roar of the ocean waves...
A sharp, metallic rapping began.
*Tap. Tap. Tap.*
It was not the sound of driftwood against rock.
It was the distinct, rhythmic cadence of Julian’s Vance signet ring, tapping against the rusted iron ladder of the lighthouse sea-gate.

And then, through the cracked stone floorboards beneath Clara’s bleeding body, a wet, choking voice whispered through the drainage grate:
*"Clara... give me my daughter."*
