Chapter 2 - ENOUGH

============================================================

The sting of Vanessa's slap had barely reached Thomas's jaw when she lifted her hand again. Her first strike had come from anger. The second movement came from panic, because she suddenly understood that fear was no longer controlling the room.

Thomas caught her wrist before the second slap landed. He did not squeeze. He pushed her hand away and took one measured step back, keeping Emily behind his body.

"Stop," he said.

Vanessa jerked free. "Get out of my house."

"This isn't your house when you use it to terrorize a child."

The words hit harder than shouting. Vanessa's face tightened, and she shoved both palms against Thomas's chest. He moved half a step but stayed upright, his boots gripping the wet plastic floor.

Emily pressed herself against the wall. Every instinct told her to become smaller, quieter, invisible. Yet another part of her watched her grandfather stand between her and Vanessa and felt something unfamiliar rising beneath the fear.

Safety.

Vanessa shoved again. "You don't know what she does. She lies. She manipulates Michael. She ruins everything and then acts innocent."

Thomas glanced over his shoulder at Emily. Her eyes were wide, her wet sleeves clinging to her wrists. She looked nothing like the dangerous manipulator Vanessa described.

"She's nine," he said.

Vanessa pushed him a third time. This time Thomas responded. He placed both hands against her shoulders and drove her backward with one forceful defensive shove.

Vanessa stumbled across the slick floor. Her hip struck the molded side of the portable toilet, and several cleaning bottles toppled from a narrow shelf, bouncing around her boots.

Her humiliation became visible before her pain did.

"You attacked me," she said.

Thomas stared at her. "You struck me first. Emily saw it."

That was the wrong thing to say.

Vanessa's eyes flicked toward the child. Emily recognized the look immediately. It was the look Vanessa used whenever she wanted to make a future consequence clear without speaking.

Thomas saw it too.

He moved sideways, blocking Vanessa's view of Emily. "Do not look at her like that."

Vanessa reached blindly toward the corner and closed her hand around the wooden handle of a toilet plunger. It was old, heavy, and longer than the modern plastic ones used inside the house.

Emily screamed, "Grandpa!"

Vanessa swung.

Thomas raised his forearm and knocked the handle sideways before it reached his head. The plunger struck the wall with a hollow crack, shaking the cheap ceiling light.

Vanessa pulled it back and tried again. Thomas caught the handle with both hands, twisted it away from his face, and pinned it against the wall.

"Enough!" he shouted.

The word seemed to fill every corner.

Vanessa let go of the plunger but immediately lunged forward. Her shoes slid in the dirty water. Thomas released the handle, stepped between her and Emily, and pushed her backward once more.

This time there was no toilet behind her.

There was only a plastic trash bin.

Vanessa fell into it hard enough to crush one side. Used paper towels, disposable cups, empty garden-soil packets, and yesterday's takeout wrappers erupted upward and spilled over her shoulders.

A paper cup landed crookedly in her hair.

For one strange second, the scene almost looked ridiculous. Then Emily began to cry, and the absurdity vanished.

Thomas turned away from Vanessa immediately. He crouched in the filthy water and took Emily's shaking hands in his own.

"Look at me," he said. "You're safe."

Emily tried to speak but only managed a breath. Thomas removed the wet gloves from her fingers one at a time. Her skin underneath was red and wrinkled from cold water.

"Did she hurt you anywhere else?"

Emily looked toward Vanessa.

Thomas followed her gaze. Vanessa had pulled herself out of the broken bin and was staring at them with an expression that mixed rage, calculation, and disbelief.

"Don't answer in front of her," Thomas said. "You don't have to."

He stood, took Emily's hand, and guided her toward the door.

Vanessa stepped into their path again. Trash clung to her jacket. Her dignity had disappeared, but her need for control had not.

"If you take her," she said, "I'm calling the police."

Thomas pulled out his phone. "Good. I'll call them with you."

The confidence drained from Vanessa's face.

Thomas dialed Michael first.

The call went to voicemail.

He tried again. This time Michael answered over the noise of traffic. "Tom? I'm driving. Is everything okay?"

Thomas looked at Emily, at the wet knees of her overalls, and at Vanessa standing in the restroom doorway.

"No," he said. "Turn around and come home."

Michael's voice changed. "What happened?"

"Your wife had Emily on her knees cleaning a portable toilet with filthy water. She kicked the bucket over and made her start again. When I stopped it, Vanessa slapped me and came at me with a plunger."

Silence filled the phone.

Then Michael said, "What?"

Vanessa laughed once, sharply. "He's lying."

Thomas turned the phone so Michael could hear her more clearly. "Emily is coming with me until you get here."

Michael's breathing became audible. "Put Emily on."

Thomas hesitated, then crouched beside her. "Your dad wants to hear your voice. You don't have to explain anything."

Emily took the phone with both hands.

"Dad?"

Michael answered instantly. "Baby, are you hurt?"

Emily closed her eyes.

That small question broke the wall she had spent months building.

"My hands hurt," she whispered. "And I'm cold."

Michael made a sound Thomas had never heard from him before. Not quite a word. Not quite a sob.

"I'm coming home," he said. "Stay with Grandpa."

Emily handed the phone back.

Thomas ended the call and led her toward the garden. Vanessa followed, shouting that he was exaggerating, that Emily was dramatic, that everyone was turning discipline into abuse.

Thomas did not answer.

The sunrise had finally reached the backyard. Pale gold light spread across the wet grass, touching the tulips, the stone bench, and the cardboard box of Sarah's old photographs.

Emily saw the box and stopped.

"Mom's pictures?"

Thomas nodded. "I brought them for you."

Her face crumpled again, but this time the tears came from a different place. She hugged the box to her chest as if it contained something alive.

Vanessa stood ten feet away, breathing hard. "You are poisoning her against me."

Thomas turned slowly. "No. I'm listening to her. There's a difference."

A gate clicked at the side of the property.

Mr. Alvarez, the gardener who maintained three neighboring yards, stepped through carrying a toolbox. He stopped when he saw the broken trash bin, the overturned cleaning bucket, Vanessa's ruined coat, and Emily's wet clothes.

"Everything okay?" he asked.

Vanessa opened her mouth first. "He attacked me."

Thomas said nothing.

Mr. Alvarez looked from Vanessa to Emily. His eyes settled on the child for a long moment.

"I heard yelling from the driveway," he said carefully. "And I saw the little girl in there when I came through the side path."

Vanessa went still.

"What exactly did you see?" Thomas asked.

Mr. Alvarez hesitated. "I saw Mrs. Carter kick a bucket over. I thought maybe it was an accident. Then I heard her tell Emily to do it again."

Emily looked at him as if a door had opened in a locked room.

Someone else had seen.

Someone else knew.

Vanessa's voice dropped. "You work for us. Be very careful what you say."

Mr. Alvarez's expression hardened. "Not anymore, I don't."

He set down his toolbox and pulled out his phone.

"The side garden camera points toward this area," he said. "Mr. Carter asked me to check it last week because raccoons kept getting into the bins. It may have recorded more than you think."

Vanessa's face lost all color.

Thomas looked toward the small black camera mounted beneath the pergola roof.

Emily followed his gaze.

For months, she had believed everything that happened when her father was gone disappeared the moment he came home.

May you like

Now, for the first time, she wondered whether the house had been watching too.
