Chapter 7 - What the Camera Kept

The full backup did not arrive as one perfect recording. The specialist recovered scattered minutes,

each with a timestamp that had to be checked against the system clock and independent household events.

One fragment showed Celeste directing Lucy to stand beside a tray of glasses.

Another showed Lucy reaching for Rosa after a glass fell. Knox appeared in the west corridor carrying an archive carton.

There was no footage of every threat Lucy had described. Irene treated the recordings as pieces of evidence,

not a substitute for the child's own care. The most important piece came from the pantry microphone.

Celeste asked Knox whether the account review could be stopped. Knox said the request had already been flagged.

Celeste answered, “Then Daniel cannot see the old names. He will ask Anna's bookkeeper.”

Their words tied the old report to the new attempt. On the recording, Lucy called from another room.

Celeste's voice changed at once. “Go upstairs,” she ordered. The specialist saved the original image and his recovery notes.

Knox's attorney later offered investigators access to a separate office drive. It contained drafts of the forged

authorization and messages about the delivery of the archive cartons. Investigators would verify dates and authorship.

The courier booking for the photograph was also linked to an email Knox had used.

Knox maintained that Celeste told him to send it to frighten Daniel into ending the inquiry. She denied the allegation through her lawyer.

Daniel had no appetite for a shouting match with either of them. He gave his statement,

turned over his records, and went to pick Lucy up from school. Her teacher said she had practiced two songs.

“Only half of one,” Lucy corrected as she got into the car. Then she smiled.

Daniel asked whether she wanted the radio on. She requested the same silly tune Anna used to sing while driving.

He found it and played it twice. For years, hearing the melody had felt like opening a wound.

Now Lucy sang the last verse off key, and grief made room for something that sounded like life.

The temporary order remained in effect while the family case continued. Celeste requested contact through counsel.

A specialist would advise on what was appropriate, and Daniel complied with the process while protecting Lucy's stated wishes.

One afternoon Lucy asked whether Celeste would be angry forever. Daniel thought carefully. “Her feelings are hers to handle,”

he said. “The grown-ups are responsible for making safe choices. You don't have to fix her feelings.”

Lucy drew a red kite against a blue sky. She placed it on the refrigerator, not behind a shelf.

Daniel noticed it every time he entered the kitchen and resisted the urge to call the change complete.

At the next hearing, Celeste challenged the recordings and suggested Knox had manipulated them.

The specialist explained how he recovered the files and preserved originals.

The judge set further review rather than deciding on rhetoric.

Rosa testified only to what she had seen: the raised hand, Lucy's frightened posture, and Celeste's grip on the child's wrist.

Her voice shook once, then steadied when she described staying beside Lucy.

Daniel testified about his own absence too. Irene had advised him to answer honestly, even when the answer embarrassed him.

The judge asked why he had missed Rosa's warnings. “I failed to read them,” Daniel said.

After court, a reporter called his office about the attempted transfer. Daniel declined to discuss Lucy.

His partners worried about public relations; he told them his daughter would not become a story they could manage.

The older scholarship records were examined separately.

Nora and Evelyn helped identify two former recipients who had never received their full awards.

Both had kept letters from Anna asking them to contact her if payments failed.

The third recipient had moved without forwarding an address. The fourth transfer remained a mystery.

Daniel approved independent funding to locate affected people and make restitution without asking anyone to endorse him publicly.

That evening, the house lost power during a thunderstorm. Lucy froze at the first rumble.

Daniel found candles while Rosa brought blankets into the kitchen, and together they made shadow animals on the wall.

Anna's silver star shone beside the candle. Lucy held it up and whispered the old line about

stars staying where you could not see them. Daniel answered, “Your mom taught us well.”

When the lights returned, Lucy asked to sleep in her own room. She left the hallway lamp on.

Daniel sat downstairs long enough to hear her breathing become steady through the monitor she had asked him to keep.

Irene called with news about Knox's office drive. A folder labeled PROJECT BLUE included a floor plan

of the west wing and a schedule for removing the archive cartons after Daniel's return from Chicago.

The planned pickup was timed for the night of the confrontation.

Daniel realized how close he had come to missing both Lucy's fear and the evidence.

Had the school not called, he would still have been away.

Before hanging up, Irene told him Evelyn wanted to meet again. She had discovered why Anna's note said FIND THE CHILD.

The fourth transfer had been linked to a child's medical expenses, then marked paid.

No hospital could confirm receiving the money. Somewhere in the old paperwork was a family that had believed help was coming.

Daniel looked at Lucy's drawing on the fridge and understood Anna's unfinished work.
