Chapter 7 - THE SECOND KEY

The bank investigator asked Darcy and Sloan to attend a confidential meeting the next morning. He refused to explain details by phone beyond saying another account required immediate review.

Sloan barely slept. At sunrise, she dressed in a charcoal suit and tied her hair back, choosing the clothes she usually wore when negotiating contracts worth millions.

She wanted to feel like the woman who could enter a boardroom and ask difficult questions without apologizing. That woman had never disappeared; she had simply gone quiet at home.

At the bank, investigators displayed records connected to a safe-deposit box rented three years earlier under Julian’s name with Fiona listed as an authorized secondary user.

The box fees had been paid from a joint account Sloan funded. That alone was unpleasant but not illegal; the contents, however, raised a more complicated issue.

After the financial freeze, Fiona attempted to access the box. The bank denied entry because investigators had already flagged unusual account activity related to the disputed credit line.

Security footage showed Fiona arriving with a small brass key and becoming agitated when refused. She reportedly insisted the box contained family documents that belonged exclusively to her.

Darcy asked whether the bank knew what was inside. The investigator explained that they did not, but Fiona’s urgency triggered a preservation request through proper legal channels.

A judge later authorized an inventory because the box might contain records related to contested marital assets. Sloan listened carefully, afraid to imagine what came next.

Inside were jewelry appraisals, property documents, cash envelopes, and copies of investment statements. Several assets had never appeared on Julian’s financial disclosures to Sloan.

Most shocking was a folder containing photocopies of Sloan’s passport, tax identification documents, signature samples, and old employment records she never gave Fiona permission to keep.

The folder also held draft loan applications with blank amount fields, suggesting someone had prepared to seek additional credit using Sloan’s identity and financial profile.

Sloan’s hands went cold. The kitchen lock had frightened her, but this discovery felt invasive in a quieter way, as though someone had been rehearsing how to become her.

The investigator emphasized that intent had not been established and nobody should assume every draft would have been used. The distinction mattered, even if the documents remained disturbing.

Darcy requested certified copies through formal process and advised Sloan to place fraud alerts with major credit bureaus. They spent the afternoon protecting accounts and changing security credentials.

Julian’s attorney contacted Darcy before evening. He proposed mediation and offered Sloan a generous property settlement if she agreed to withdraw certain allegations from the divorce petition.

Darcy read the offer aloud without commentary. It included the condominium, a cash payment, and mutual confidentiality regarding the birthday incident and disputed financial documents.

Sloan asked whether accepting would stop any independent bank investigation. Darcy said no; private settlement could resolve divorce issues but could not erase decisions made by outside authorities.

For a moment, Sloan considered taking the easiest exit. She wanted sleep, quiet, and a future where Julian’s name appeared only on archived documents.

Then she saw the folder of copied identification in her mind. Silence had already cost too much. She would not trade it again simply because the price looked generous.

Sloan authorized Darcy to reject confidentiality while remaining open to fair mediation. She was willing to divide property honestly, but she would not promise secrecy about documented conduct.

The decision enraged Julian. That night, an anonymous account posted accusations claiming Sloan had staged the birthday humiliation to seize property from a financially struggling husband.

The post included a cropped photograph of Sloan beside the silver-covered table, making her appear triumphant while Fiona cried in the background.

Darcy advised against a public argument. Sloan instead released one short statement through her attorney confirming that a private legal matter was proceeding through appropriate channels.

She attached nothing, accused nobody, and returned to work. The restraint frustrated gossip sites more than a dramatic response because there was little new material to distort.

Within days, two guests independently confirmed the recorded threat and the process service. Dennis publicly stated he personally witnessed Julian block Sloan’s exit after receiving divorce papers.

The online story shifted, but Sloan refused to celebrate. Public opinion could change again tomorrow; court records and bank documents mattered more than strangers choosing sides.

Three weeks after the birthday, she returned to the condominium with an officer and a moving team. Julian had already relocated to Fiona’s townhouse under the protection order.

In the pantry, Sloan removed the oat tin and found the strip of tape where her secret debit card once waited. She kept the empty tin for reasons she could not explain.

As she carried it toward the elevator, she noticed a second brass key taped beneath the lowest pantry shelf, one she had never seen before.
