Chapter 5 - THE MERCER ACCOUNTS

Ryan named the investigation after the phrase Ethan had used most often: the Mercer accounts. The name appeared in transfers, internal memos, and abbreviated notes buried inside financial attachments.

He built a timeline across the apartment wall using printed records and colored tabs. I had never seen money displayed so clearly as a map of decisions.

At the center sat Mercer Holdings, a company registered to a small office in Delaware. Its listed manager was another corporation, which was controlled by a trust with no public beneficiaries.

Money entered Mercer Holdings from Carter Development, moved through two subcontractors, then returned as loans to private Carter entities. The circular pattern raised obvious questions about purpose and disclosure.

Ryan still refused to call it criminal. He said accountants should describe what records show, while prosecutors decide which laws those records violate.

That discipline helped me trust the process. My brothers were furious, but they were building a case instead of satisfying anger with reckless shortcuts.

James obtained a court order preventing transfer of the disputed lakefront interest while the signature question was examined. Robert responded by accusing us of attempting a hostile takeover.

The accusation sounded dramatic, yet our legal request was narrow. We wanted the original consent form, not the entire Carter empire, and we wanted to know who had witnessed my signature.

The original document arrived under sealed production. A forensic document examiner compared it with authenticated examples and identified several inconsistencies requiring further laboratory analysis.

More revealing was the notary stamp. The notary listed on the form had been hospitalized in Florida on the date the document claimed she witnessed my signature in Chicago.

Nathan interviewed the notary with her attorney present. She denied notarizing the form and produced travel and medical records confirming she had been hundreds of miles away.

That changed everything. The question was no longer whether my handwriting looked strange. Someone had used a notary credential on a document affecting property worth tens of millions.

Vanessa’s witness signature remained beside the false notarization. James sent her attorney a letter requesting voluntary clarification before pursuing formal testimony.

Her response arrived within hours. She refused to answer without immunity from potential civil claims, which told us she understood the danger around the document.

Meanwhile, Sofia returned to work for a different catering company after losing her position at the Carter mansion. Daniel quietly connected her with an attorney when the Carters threatened a breach claim.

She refused money from my family. What she wanted was protection from retaliation and assurance that speaking truth would not destroy her parents’ immigration sponsorship case.

James made clear that nobody could promise legal outcomes outside their authority. He did, however, connect Sofia’s family with independent counsel and document every Carter threat.

That evening, Sofia remembered another detail. Before guests arrived, Vanessa and Patricia argued inside the powder room, and Sofia heard Patricia say, “After tonight, she’ll sign anything.”

The words struck me harder than I expected. For days, I had treated the assault and the forged property consent as separate betrayals orbiting the same cruel family.

Now the possibility emerged that the public humiliation had been designed to break me into signing something new. Ethan had repeatedly mentioned paperwork waiting in his study.

Nathan requested a list of documents prepared for the party date. A Carter assistant, acting through counsel, produced a draft marital settlement and property waiver created that afternoon.

The waiver would have surrendered any claim I held through my father’s partnership agreement. It also contained a broad confidentiality provision covering private conduct inside Carter residences.

I stared at the pages until the words blurred. The wine spill had been accidental, yet the machinery around my humiliation appeared ready before Vanessa’s dress was stained.

James cautioned that preparation did not prove a planned assault. Still, the documents showed the family expected me to sign away rights that evening.

Michael asked whether Ethan had mentioned a birthday gift. I remembered him saying there would be a private surprise after dessert and that I should trust whatever he placed before me.

Ryan returned to the Mercer accounts with renewed urgency. If the disputed land collateral failed, several Carter loans could be called, exposing a chain of obligations across their riverfront project.

Robert had not forged a signature merely to steal an old family parcel. He may have needed my consent to prevent lenders from discovering that vital collateral was never properly pledged.

The scale explained Ethan’s fear on the phone. A defective consent could force banks to reexamine valuations, guarantees, and the financial statements supporting hundreds of millions in financing.

Again, none of us celebrated. Thousands of employees and subcontractors depended on Carter projects, and collapsing the company indiscriminately would punish people who had done nothing wrong.

Daniel proposed a different objective. We would isolate the fraud, protect legitimate operations where possible, and target responsibility instead of destroying livelihoods for dramatic satisfaction.

That plan felt like the difference between my family and Ethan’s. The Carters used innocent people as shields. My brothers treated innocent people as a reason for restraint.

Near midnight, Vanessa finally called James. She said she had information about the property waiver, the Mercer accounts, and the birthday party.

She would talk only if Ethan could not reach her. Her voice shook when she added one final sentence. “He didn’t start planning what happened to Emily that night. He started planning it weeks ago.”
