Chapter 7 - THE GALA TRAP

Eleanor Price refused to send documents electronically.

By noon, Sophia, Rebecca, and Daniel were driving north through steady rain toward a stone house surrounded by bare trees. Eleanor opened the door before they reached the porch. She was eighty-one, silver-haired, straight-backed, and visibly unimpressed by urgency.

“You look like Charles when you are frightened,” she told Sophia.

“I am not frightened.”

Eleanor raised one eyebrow. “Then you look exactly like him.”

Inside, the old lawyer led them to a study lined with red casebooks. On the desk sat a sealed envelope bearing Sophia’s name.

“I was instructed to give you this only if one of three things happened,” Eleanor said. “Victor Hale returned to a Bennett company. A legacy account was touched. Or you asked me directly about the Meridian key.”

Sophia stared at the envelope. “Why was I never told?”

“Because your father did not trust time.”

Rebecca frowned. “Meaning?”

“He believed a secret known too early becomes a vulnerability.”

Sophia opened the envelope.

Inside was a single page.

The legacy key was not a password.

It was a governance mechanism.

During the 2009 financial crisis, Charles Bennett had created an emergency authority allowing two designated trustees to move large amounts of capital without standard board approval if company survival required it. The authority was temporary, but parts of its infrastructure remained dormant in an old trust platform.

Victor Hale had helped design it.

“Can he still use it?” Sophia asked.

Eleanor nodded grimly. “If he retained one of the physical authentication tokens and obtained a current Bennett signature certificate.”

Daniel went pale.

Jason had access to signature scans.

Victor may have had an old token.

The path was real.

“Where is the current certificate?” Rebecca asked.

Eleanor looked at Sophia.

“In your possession, whether you know it or not.”

Sophia thought through everything inherited from her father.

Then she remembered the small titanium key card sealed inside the presentation box of his final board watch. She had never used it. It sat in a private vault at Bennett headquarters.

They drove back immediately.

The vault was empty.

The watch remained.

The titanium card was gone.

Security logs showed the vault had been opened four nights earlier using Jason’s biometric credentials and a temporary override approved by Chief Operations Officer Martin Sloane.

Sophia stared at the name.

Martin had worked for her father for twenty-two years.

He had hugged Sophia at Charles’s funeral.

Daniel whispered, “We have an internal accomplice.”

Rebecca closed her eyes briefly. “We need to move before they know we know.”

That was when Sophia decided to stop reacting.

Bennett Family Holdings had an annual charity gala scheduled for the following evening. Nearly every senior executive, major partner, trustee, and donor would be present. Canceling it would warn Victor and Martin that the trap had been discovered.

So Sophia did the opposite.

She expanded the guest list.

She invited Martin to present the foundation’s new medical initiative.

She had staff send Jason a formal invitation through his attorney, stating that personal property exchange documents would be available at the event.

Then she waited.

The ballroom glittered beneath chandeliers the next night. Cameras lined the entrance. Guests moved through white floral arrangements, unaware that federal financial-crimes investigators had been briefed and were positioned in adjacent rooms.

Sophia wore a simple black gown and no diamonds.

Lily stayed in a secure suite upstairs.

Rebecca stood near the stage.

Daniel monitored network traffic from a command room.

Martin arrived smiling.

Jason arrived twenty minutes later.

The room noticed him.

Whispers followed as he crossed the floor alone, wearing an older suit and none of his usual arrogance. He saw Sophia across the ballroom and stopped.

For a moment, they simply looked at each other.

Then he approached.

“You invited me to humiliate me again?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

“To give you one chance to choose which side of the story you belong on.”

His jaw tightened. “You still think there are sides.”

“There are always sides when someone is stealing.”

Jason looked toward Martin.

That glance was enough.

Sophia lowered her voice. “Where is Victor?”

Jason did not answer.

“Where is the titanium certificate?”

His face changed.

Sophia knew she had hit the center.

“You found Eleanor,” he said.

“Where is it?”

Jason leaned closer. “Martin has it.”

Across the ballroom, Martin had stopped smiling.

Daniel’s voice came through Sophia’s discreet earpiece.

“We have movement. Sloane just accessed the legacy portal.”

Sophia kept her face calm.

“How much?”

“Transfer request building. Fifty million.”

Rebecca moved toward the side door.

Sophia looked at Jason. “If you want one thing in your life to be real, help stop it.”

Jason stared at her.

Then Martin abruptly left the ballroom.

Jason swore and ran after him.

Security moved too.

The elegant gala exploded into motion.

Martin shoved through a service corridor toward the freight elevators. Jason caught up near the kitchen doors and grabbed his arm. A silver catering tray crashed to the floor.

“Give me the token!” Jason shouted.

Martin drove an elbow into his chest and broke free.

Security tackled Martin before he reached the elevator.

A small titanium card skidded across the marble.

Sophia arrived seconds later.

Martin looked up from the floor, furious.

“You have no idea what your father did,” he spat.

Sophia picked up the card with a gloved evidence pouch.

“Then you can explain it under oath.”

Police and investigators entered the corridor.

Daniel’s voice came through the earpiece again.

“Transfer blocked. No funds moved.”

Sophia finally exhaled.

Then Jason, bent over and catching his breath, looked at Martin.

“Where is Victor?”

Martin smiled.

It was the wrong kind of smile.

“Already gone.”

Sophia’s blood turned cold.

“Gone where?”

May you like

Martin looked directly at her.

“To the lake house.”
