Chapter 6 - GRACE'S ROOM

============================================================
The first thing missing from the villa was not jewelry. It was a key. Daniel discovered it when they returned with Detective Brooks and found the wall safe in his private office standing open.
Cash remained inside. Watches remained untouched. Property deeds were still stacked in their leather folder. But one small brass key was gone.
Elena recognized the empty hook immediately. "Grace's writing room." Daniel stared at her. The room had been locked since his first wife's death five years earlier. It occupied the narrow tower above the library, accessible through a private stair.
Daniel kept the key in the safe because opening that room still felt like crossing a boundary with the dead.
Vivian had asked about it more than once. He had always refused. They climbed the tower stairs together.
The door stood open. For a moment Daniel could not enter. Grace was everywhere inside. Her books still lined the walls. A faded blue scarf hung over the back of a chair. Sunlight fell across a desk where dried ink remained inside an old fountain pen.
Dust covered nearly everything. Except one shelf. Someone had searched it recently. Books leaned at wrong angles. Two archival boxes sat open on the floor. Papers had been removed and replaced carelessly.
Brooks photographed the room before anyone touched anything. "What would Vivian want in here?" Daniel shook his head.
"Grace's personal letters, maybe. Estate notes. I don't know." Elena walked toward the desk. Grace had been meticulous. She kept household records, school memories, charity files, and letters she never intended to mail.
One drawer was slightly open. Inside lay a cream envelope addressed in Grace's handwriting. FOR DANIEL — IF LILY EVER STOPS FEELING SAFE HERE.
Daniel stopped breathing for a second. "I've never seen that." Elena looked at him. "Then maybe she hoped you never would."
Brooks documented the envelope before allowing him to open it. The letter inside was several pages long. Grace had written it during her final illness.
Daniel read silently at first, then his hands began to shake. She wrote that Lily was too young to remember her clearly and would one day need other adults to help separate memory from myth.
She asked Daniel never to confuse a beautiful house with a safe home. She warned him that grief could make a person grateful to anyone who brought order back into chaos.
And she wrote one sentence that stopped him completely. If someone ever asks you to choose between peace in the house and truth from our daughter, choose the truth, even when it destroys your peace.
Daniel sat in Grace's chair. Elena looked away to give him privacy, but there was no privacy left in the Hart family. Secrets had nearly killed a child.
Brooks examined the opened boxes. One contained financial files. The other contained correspondence between Grace and a family attorney named Naomi Chen.
Daniel knew Naomi well. Vivian did too. Several letters discussed the lakeside estate, Lily's trust, and a provision Daniel had forgotten.
If Daniel became unable or unwilling to serve as Lily's primary guardian, Grace had named two alternates. The first was her sister, now living overseas.
The second was Elena Carter. Elena stared at the document. "I didn't know." Daniel looked at her. "Grace never told you?"
"No." Brooks read the clause carefully. "This doesn't transfer money to Ms. Carter. It only creates a guardianship preference if the conditions are triggered."
Daniel nodded slowly. Then he understood. "Vivian knew." Elena frowned. "How?" He pointed toward the disturbed box. "Because she found this."
That changed the danger immediately. Vivian had spent months constructing a record that Lily was unstable and difficult. If she could separate Lily from Daniel's household, she could weaken the child's daily connection to the estate.
But Grace's documents meant Elena represented another obstacle. The woman who had just saved Lily from drowning was also the person Grace had trusted as a last line of protection.
"She accused me of wanting the family," Elena whispered. Daniel looked at her with sudden clarity. "Because she thought you could legally take her place."
"I never wanted her place." "I know." Brooks's phone buzzed. A patrol officer had located Vivian's car near the marina, empty.
No sign of Vivian. Sophie was still at the advocacy center under supervision. Lily remained at the guesthouse with two officers and the nurse.
Everyone was accounted for. Except Vivian. Then Elena noticed something else missing. On Grace's desk had always been a small silver music box shaped like a lake house. Grace once told Elena it contained a recording for Lily.
The dust outline remained. The box was gone. Daniel's voice became quiet. "Why would she take that?" Elena remembered Grace winding it while pregnant, smiling as a soft melody played.
"Because Lily loves it." Brooks looked at her. "Would Lily leave safety to get it back?" Elena's blood ran cold.
"If she believed it was the only thing left from her mother? Yes." Daniel immediately called the guesthouse.
The nurse answered. Lily was safe. Then she added something that made Elena grip the table. A package had arrived ten minutes earlier.
No courier had been seen. It had been left outside the gate. Inside was a photograph of Grace's silver music box.
On the back, written by hand, were six words. LILY DESERVES TO HEAR HER MOTHER. Daniel's face hardened.
"Don't show it to her." The nurse hesitated. Too late. Lily had already seen the photograph. She was crying and asking where the music box was.
Brooks ordered the guesthouse locked down and sent additional officers. Daniel wanted to leave immediately. Elena stopped him.
"That's what Vivian wants." "My daughter is there." "Protected by police. Think. Why send a message if she can reach Lily directly?"
Daniel forced himself to pause. Elena studied the photograph Brooks had asked the nurse to text them. Grace's music box sat on weathered gray wood.
Behind it was water. Not the pool. The lake. A green rope crossed the corner of the image.
Elena knew that rope. "The old north dock." Daniel turned. The Hart property included two docks. The main dock near the villa had been renovated recently.
The north dock, hidden behind trees, had been closed for repairs after storm damage. No cameras covered it.
Brooks called units toward the location. They drove there separately, police arriving first. The old dock was empty.
At its center sat Grace's silver music box. Nothing else. Daniel approached only after Brooks cleared the area.
The lid of the music box was open. Inside, instead of the old mechanism, lay a memory card.
Brooks bagged it. "This could be another message," she said. Daniel stared across the lake. "Or evidence." Back at the security room, a forensic officer opened the card on an isolated computer.
There was one video file. The date stamp was three weeks old. The video began in darkness. Then Vivian's voice spoke.
"Say it again." A child sniffled. Lily. "I fell because I was bad." Elena's hands clenched. Vivian's voice continued.
"And who makes Daddy unhappy?" Lily whispered, "Me." Daniel turned away from the screen. The recording lasted only twenty-seven seconds.
But it destroyed the last possibility that the cruelty had been impulsive or isolated. Vivian had trained Lily to blame herself.
At the end of the video, the camera shifted accidentally toward a mirror. Vivian appeared in reflection. So did Charles Wynn, the family consultant.
He was standing behind her. Watching. Brooks paused the frame. "Now we know he wasn't just receiving messages."
Daniel stared at the man's reflected face. "He was there." "Yes." Another officer entered the room. "Detective, we just got a hit on Vivian Hart's credit card."
Brooks turned. "Where?" "A gas station across the state line. Thirty minutes ago." Daniel looked toward the map on the wall.

Vivian was running. But now she was not the only person police wanted to find. Charles Wynn's phone had gone dark too. And for the first time, the case was larger than one cruel stepmother inside one beautiful house.
