Chapter 2 - THE CAMERA NEVER BLINKED

================================================================
The red LIVE icon continued blinking while no one in the ballroom seemed capable of breathing normally. Broken champagne flutes glittered beneath the fallen wedding arch, and white roses lay scattered around Aria Vale like the wreckage of something that had finally collapsed under its own weight.
Lily recognized the phone before anyone touched it. It belonged to one of the wedding media assistants, a young man assigned to stream the ceremony to relatives overseas. The broadcast had apparently never been switched off after the formal vows.
Naomi did not look away from Aria. “Lily,” she said quietly, “stay behind me.” Aria rose from the broken flowers with frosting streaked across one shoulder and fury burning through the composure she had worn all evening. Her gaze moved from Naomi to the phone, then across the rows of guests who had witnessed everything.
“Turn that off,” she ordered. No one moved. “Now.” Daniel Vale appeared at the ballroom entrance just as the command cut through the room. He was still wearing his black wedding tuxedo, though his bow tie had been loosened. Emma, his new wife, followed one pace behind him in a satin gown, her expression shifting from confusion to horror as she saw the destroyed cake table.
Daniel looked first at his mother. Then he saw Lily. Champagne still darkened Lily's hair and collar. Crushed petals clung to one knee of her uniform. She was standing behind Naomi with both hands clenched, as if keeping them still required every ounce of control she had.
Daniel's face changed. “Lily?” Aria turned sharply. That reaction told Naomi more than the name itself. Daniel crossed the ballroom. “What happened?” Aria answered before anyone else could.
“Your security guard assaulted me.” Naomi's expression remained flat. Daniel looked at the fallen candlestick, the broken arch, then the phone still streaming from the side table.
Emma reached it first. She lifted the phone and stared at the screen. Comments were climbing faster than she could read them. WHAT DID SHE JUST DO TO THAT GIRL?
IS THAT ARIA VALE? SOMEONE SAVE THIS VIDEO. Emma's fingers went cold. “It was live,” she whispered. Aria's face hardened. “End it.” Emma looked at her mother-in-law.
“No.” The word was not loud, but it traveled through the room with surprising force. Aria blinked. Emma turned the phone toward Daniel. The stream automatically replayed short buffered segments when viewers dragged backward. Daniel watched six seconds of footage: Lily on the floor, Aria's heel crushing petals, champagne thrown into Lily's face, Naomi entering from the edge of the frame.
He stopped the replay. His jaw flexed. “Mother.” Aria lifted one hand. “You have no idea what she came here to do.” Lily's pulse jumped. Daniel looked at her.
The old promise inside Elena Carter's envelope suddenly felt dangerously close to the surface. “What does that mean?” he asked. Aria's eyes found Lily's. There was no longer contempt in them.
There was warning. Lily understood that if she stayed silent now, Aria would control the story by morning. Naomi might be blamed. The caterer might be sued. The video might be buried under lawyers, settlements, and public relations statements.
Her mother had spent years afraid of exactly that kind of power. Lily stepped out from behind Naomi. “I came to give you something.” Daniel stared at her.
Aria moved immediately. “No.” Naomi shifted one step sideways, blocking her path without touching her. Daniel's eyes narrowed. “Give me what?” Lily looked toward the service corridor.
“My mother left documents for you before she died.” Something almost invisible passed across Daniel's face. Elena Carter had helped raise him through long stretches of childhood when Aria was traveling, negotiating acquisitions, or sleeping in penthouses on other continents. He had not known she was ill until weeks before her death.
He had sent flowers to the funeral. He had never gone. Shame settled visibly over him. “What documents?” “I don't know everything that's inside,” Lily said. “She made me promise not to open the sealed packet. She said you had to see it yourself.”
Aria laughed, too quickly. “This is absurd.” Daniel looked at her. Aria continued before he could speak. “Her mother was dismissed for misconduct. This is retaliation dressed up as grief.”
Lily went still. “My mother wasn't dismissed.” Aria's mouth tightened. “She resigned.” “She was forced to sign something.” A ripple moved through several older employees standing near the ballroom doors.
Daniel heard it. He turned toward them. One of the men lowered his eyes. Emma noticed too. “What did she sign?” Daniel asked. Aria looked around the ballroom as though remembering there were witnesses everywhere.
“This is not a conversation for my son's wedding.” “No,” Emma said. “It probably isn't.” Her voice was steadier now. “But you made it one.” Aria looked at her with cold disbelief.
Emma held the livestream phone at her side. “You humiliated an employee in front of our guests, attacked our security officer, and now you're trying to silence the person you targeted. Whatever this is, it doesn't disappear because the flowers cost a hundred thousand dollars.”
Daniel closed his eyes briefly. Outside the ballroom, phones were beginning to ring. One after another. Guests checked screens, read messages, and looked back toward Aria. The clip had escaped the wedding before the wedding itself had ended.
Naomi recognized the shift immediately. Private scandal had become public evidence. She touched the earpiece clipped beneath her hair. “Security team, lock down the service hall and preserve all camera footage from the last hour. No deletions.”
Aria stared at her. “You're fired.” Naomi met her eyes. “You didn't hire me.” Emma slowly raised one hand. “I did.” That surprised even Daniel. Emma had insisted on independent security after receiving anonymous warnings about press intrusion. The contract belonged to her family, not Aria's corporation.
Naomi continued calmly, “And this is now an incident scene. Nobody touches the cameras.” Aria stepped toward Daniel. “Come upstairs. We will handle this privately.” Daniel did not move.
“When did Elena leave?” His mother stopped. “When?” he repeated. Aria looked at him with a strange mixture of frustration and maternal command. “Years ago.” “That's not an answer.”
Lily took a breath. “Fourteen months ago.” Daniel looked at her. “She was still working here fourteen months ago?” Lily nodded. His face drained slightly. Daniel had been told Elena had retired almost three years earlier.
Emma saw the realization immediately. “What else were you told?” she asked. Daniel did not answer. The string quartet had packed their instruments but had not left. Caterers stood frozen near swinging doors. The ballroom, built for celebration, had become a chamber of witnesses.
Lily reached toward her soaked collar, then stopped. “The packet is downstairs in my locker.” Aria's composure finally cracked. “No one goes downstairs.” Naomi turned her head very slightly.
That was the first openly panicked command Aria had given. Daniel heard it too. He stared at his mother for a long moment. Then he faced Lily.
“I'll go with you.” Aria stepped between them. “You will do no such thing.” Daniel's expression hardened. For years, he had obeyed that tone before he even recognized he was doing it. It had directed schools, friendships, jobs, investments, public appearances, and every decision Aria considered important enough to claim.
Tonight, standing beside the ruins of his own wedding cake, something finally broke. “Move,” he said. Aria did not. Emma walked to Daniel's side. Naomi moved to Lily's.
Four people now faced the woman who had controlled the room minutes earlier. Aria looked beyond them toward the guests, perhaps searching for allies. Instead, dozens of phones were pointed in her direction.
She lowered her voice. “You don't understand what you're about to destroy.” Lily met her eyes. “No,” Lily said. “I think that's why my mother wanted him to know.”

A heavy silence followed. Then, from the service corridor below, came the sharp sound of a door slamming. Naomi's head snapped toward it. Someone was already downstairs. And Lily's envelope was still in the locker.
