Chapter 4 - The Story Vanessa Built

By eight in the morning, the gala had become a crime scene and Blackwood House no longer belonged to the family that owned it. Detectives moved through the east wing with cameras and evidence bags, while uniformed officers interviewed staff members who had spent the night pretending not to hear one another whisper.

Adrian returned from the hospital with Claire's permission and one goal: say as little as possible until Maya delivered the recovered footage. Every instinct in him demanded confrontation, but anger was easy to manipulate. Evidence was harder.

Vanessa waited in the library with Detective Serena Cole, a homicide investigator temporarily assigned because Claire's injuries could have become fatal. Vanessa had changed into a cream sweater and dark trousers. Without the burgundy gown, she looked almost ordinary. That, Adrian realized, was one of her gifts.

She knew how to become whatever a room required. When Adrian entered, Vanessa stood quickly. "How is she?" "Alive." Her eyes filled. "Thank God." Detective Cole watched both of them. She was in her forties, calm-faced, with the patient stillness of someone who understood that nervous people often filled silence with the truth.

"Ms. Hale has given us a preliminary statement," Cole said. "She says she and Claire argued, Claire lost her balance, and the table broke when she fell." Adrian looked at Vanessa. "Is that still your story?" A flicker crossed her face. "It's what happened." "Claire says you pushed her."

Vanessa's breath caught. The reaction might have been fear, sorrow, or calculation. Adrian no longer trusted himself to distinguish among them. "Claire has hated me from the beginning," she said. "She thinks I took her place in your life. You know that." "She was lying on broken glass."

"She has a concussion." Detective Cole raised one hand. "Mr. Blackwood, I need you to let me ask the questions." Adrian sat down. Cole turned to Vanessa. "Why were you in the east sitting room?" "Claire asked me to meet her there." "Why?" "She wanted to accuse me of stealing from the family charity."

Adrian's expression did not move, but Vanessa saw enough to know Claire had already spoken. She continued quickly. "The accusations are ridiculous. I told her that. She became aggressive. She said she would destroy my engagement, and when I tried to leave, she blocked me." "Did you touch her?" Cole asked.

Vanessa hesitated. "I may have put my hands up to keep distance between us. Everything happened quickly." The lie was changing shape. Adrian heard it happen in real time.

At first Vanessa had said Claire simply slipped. Now she was admitting physical contact before being shown any footage. She was building space around herself, preparing to retreat from a story she sensed could not survive.

"What happened to the folder Claire carried into the room?" Adrian asked. Vanessa went pale. Detective Cole noticed. "What folder?" Adrian described it. Vanessa looked at the floor. "I don't remember a folder." The library door opened. Maya entered carrying a plain black laptop case.

Vanessa looked at her, then at the case, and every bit of color disappeared from her face. Adrian felt no satisfaction. Only a cold grief that settled deeper with each confirmation.

Maya placed one encrypted drive on the table and handed another to Detective Cole. "Recovered local camera cache from the east sitting room. Chain-of-custody notes are attached. The primary server copy was deliberately altered." Cole's attention sharpened. "By whom?" "The deletion was executed from a device assigned to Martin Vale."

Vanessa closed her eyes. Adrian saw it. So did Cole. The detective plugged in the drive and opened the recovered sequence. No one spoke as the silent images played across the laptop screen. Claire held the folder. Vanessa blocked the door. Claire tried to leave. Vanessa grabbed her wrist.

The first shove. The second. The table exploding beneath Claire. Then the four terrible seconds during which Vanessa stood motionless over her. Finally, the folder. The fireplace. The papers hidden inside the burgundy gown. When the clip ended, the room remained absolutely silent. Vanessa stared at the frozen frame of herself kneeling beside Claire.

"I can explain," she whispered. Detective Cole leaned back. "I strongly suggest you wait for an attorney." Vanessa began to shake. "Martin told me she was going to ruin everything. He said Claire had documents she didn't understand. He said if those papers got to Adrian, people would be hurt."

Adrian's hands closed into fists. "Did Martin tell you to push her?" Cole asked. "No." "Did anyone?" "No. I panicked. She was going to leave. I grabbed her, she fought me, and I—" Vanessa looked at Adrian. "I made a mistake." Adrian stood so quickly the chair legs scraped against the floor.

"A mistake is sending the wrong attachment," he said. "You pushed my sister through a glass table and then burned evidence while she was bleeding." Tears spilled down Vanessa's face. "You don't know what Martin has on me." "Then tell the detective." Vanessa's mouth opened, but no words came.

Detective Cole ended the interview and formally placed her under arrest for aggravated assault, evidence tampering, and obstruction pending additional charges. When an officer approached with handcuffs, Vanessa recoiled as though humiliation were somehow more unbearable than what she had done. "Adrian, please." He said nothing.

"Please look at me." He did. For eighteen months he had imagined a future with this woman. He had pictured children running through the west garden, Christmas mornings in the old breakfast room, Claire eventually teasing him for having been so guarded about love.

Now the woman from that imagined future was being handcuffed beneath his mother's portrait. "Martin found me before you did," Vanessa said suddenly. "He knew about my father. He knew the debts, the lawsuits, everything. He helped make them disappear. Then he introduced us at the museum benefit."

Adrian felt the floor tilt under him. He remembered that night. Martin had insisted Adrian attend. Vanessa continued through tears. "At first I was only supposed to tell him what you said about business. Then he wanted schedules. Password hints. Names. He said he was protecting you from the board. By the time I understood what he was really doing, I was already inside it."

"Inside what?" Cole demanded. Vanessa looked toward the closed library door, as if Martin might still be standing on the other side. "The Blackwood Trust." Adrian's anger became something quieter.

The Blackwood Trust held the controlling shares of the family company, the charitable foundation, and the estate itself. His mother had designed it so no single person could sell the family's controlling interest in a moment of panic or pressure. "What about it?" he asked. Vanessa swallowed. "Martin doesn't want the charity money. That's nothing."

"Then what does he want?" "Control." The word landed in the library like a stone. Detective Cole leaned forward. "How?" Vanessa shook her head. "I never saw the entire plan. He kept everyone separated. But the wedding mattered. He said once Adrian and I were legally married, there would be a six-month window."

Adrian stared at her. Their wedding was twelve days away. "A window for what?" Vanessa looked directly at him. "For you to lose everything without realizing it was gone."
