Chapter 17 - The Poisoned Gala

Deep beneath the foundation, in the historical vaults where the Vance fortune had originally been hoarded during the Industrial Age, the atmosphere was suffocating.

Claire was strapped into a heavy steel examination chair beneath harsh, portable work lights. Standing before her was Marcus Vance, his silver-tipped cane resting against a portable diagnostic terminal humming on a metal table.

"You have your mother's defiance in your eyes, Claire," Marcus remarked, adjusting a digital scanner that clicked rhythmically in his palm. "Sarah looked at me with that exact same disgust when she stole the ledger and leaped from my yacht into the Mediterranean. She thought she was saving you from this life. Yet here you are, sitting in the heart of my empire."

Claire spat blood onto the cold concrete floor, having fought fiercely before Marcus’s operatives had overpowered her. Her jaw was bruised, but her gaze never wavered.

"My mother died because of your greed," Claire rasped, her eyes blazing. "Ethan destroyed your wife. The authorities dismantled your smuggling routes. You are an old ghost clinging to ashes."

Marcus tilted his head, amused. "Ashes? Oh, my sweet girl. You think Eleanor’s petty vanity and black-market baubles were my empire? Eleanor was a clown, a distraction designed to absorb the glare of the media while I established the real network. The Vance Foundation was never about art or charities. It was a private clearinghouse for global intelligence."

The heavy vault doors groaned on their rusted hinges. Ethan was escorted into the room at gunpoint by Victoria’s mercenaries, his hands bound behind his back with heavy zip-ties, his weapon already confiscated.

"Claire!" Ethan strained against his bindings, but a rifle butt slammed ruthlessly into his kidney, forcing him to his knees on the concrete.

"Ethan!" Claire cried out, thrashing against the leather straps binding her wrists.

Marcus turned slowly, looking down at his son with an expression that carried neither warmth nor hatred—only the clinical detachment of a scientist inspecting a flawed specimen.

"Stand up, Ethan," Marcus commanded. "A Vance does not kneel before hired guns."

Ethan pushed himself up, breathing through the pain, his green eyes boring into his father’s face. "You faked your death. You let your own son grow up believing he was the son of a tragic martyr. You let Eleanor turn into a psychopath."

"Eleanor was always a psychopath, Ethan. I merely directed her talents," Marcus said smoothly. "And you... you disappointed me. You had the intelligence, the military training, the charisma to lead the network into the next century. Instead, you fell in love with a street stray and attempted to turn my kingdom into a playground for orphans."

"I turned your kingdom into something that saves lives instead of destroying them," Ethan countered, stepping forward until the barrel of a mercenary’s rifle pressed against his sternum. "It’s over, Marcus. The FBI knows Thorne signed a fraudulent certificate. The transaction routes are already flagged."

Marcus clicked his tongue. "By tomorrow morning, Thorne will suffer an unfortunate cardiac arrest, and the routing codes will be rerouted through the Swiss consortium Victoria established. But none of that matters without the final piece."

Marcus lifted the digital scanner and turned back to Claire. "Your mother encoded the final recovery sequence into a biological algorithm. The pulse-point on your jugular, Claire. Let me scan your heartbeat, and Ethan walks out of this cellar alive. Refuse... and Victoria will shoot him through the kneecaps before your eyes."
