Chapter 9 - The Boardroom Execution

At precisely 3:00 PM, the boardroom on the fiftieth floor of the Sterling Tower was packed to capacity.
Twenty-four directors sat around the forty-foot boardroom table. Tension hung in the room like ozone before a thunderstorm. The news of Julian Mercer’s dawn arrest had already hit the financial wires, sending Sterling Marine’s stock tumbling seven percent in pre-market trading. The directors—billionaires, former admirals, and international trade magnates—were panicked, arguing in hushed, furious tones.
The double doors swung open.
Arthur Sterling stepped into the room. He wore a bespoke navy suit, crisp white shirt, and an iron-grey silk tie. His posture was commanding, his gaze unyielding. He didn't look like a man who had been shattered by scandal; he looked like a general taking the field.
Beside him walked Marcus Kane, who carried a slim aluminum briefcase, followed by two armed federal marshals who stationed themselves outside the entrance.
The room fell instantly silent.
Arthur walked to the head of the table, remaining standing. He did not offer greetings. He did not smile.
"Gentlemen," Arthur began, his voice cutting through the heavy air with crystalline authority. "Over the past forty-eight hours, you have heard rumors. You have seen the stock fluctuations. You have wondered if this company is on the verge of collapse."
He placed both hands flat on the polished mahogany table, leaning forward slightly.
"Sterling Marine is not collapsing. We are simply cutting out a cancer."
Marcus stepped forward, opened the briefcase, and connected an encrypted drive to the central projection system.
The vast glass wall behind Arthur flickered to life.
For the next twenty minutes, Arthur systematically dismantled Julian Mercer’s entire existence before the horrified eyes of the board. He showed the financial ledgers linking Vanguard Capital to the Bulgarian digitalis purchases. He displayed the toxicology reports proving the murder of his wife, Clara Sterling. He played the audio deposition of Sophia Bennett detailing the fake pregnancy, the silicone prosthetic, the planned illegal adoption, and the conspiracy to assassinate Arthur himself.
The board members sat in stunned, paralyzed horror. Several directors turned pale; two looked physically sick.
"Julian Mercer’s assets have been frozen by the Department of Justice," Arthur continued, his voice devoid of all emotion. "His voting proxies have been declared null and void by emergency order of the Securities and Exchange Commission. His seat on this board is vacated effective immediately."
Arthur pressed a button on the control console. A formal resolution appeared on the screens of every director's tablet.
"Before you is Resolution 408," Arthur said. "It calls for the total recapitalization of Sterling Marine, the permanent expulsion of Julian Mercer from all corporate registries, and the re-establishment of my family's sixty-five percent voting majority through an immediate buyback of Mercer’s forfeited shares at a distressed liquidation value."
He looked around the table, his sharp grey eyes locking onto each director in turn.
"Those in favor, raise your hands."
Twenty-three hands shot into the air simultaneously. Not a single person hesitated. Not a single breath was wasted in dissent.
Arthur didn't smile. He simply nodded once.

"The resolution passes. Sterling Marine remains a family company. Meeting adjourned."
