Chapter 8 - MIDNIGHT AT THE WATERFRONT

A cold wind swept across the waterfront warehouses, carrying salt from the river and diesel from distant cargo boats. Under floodlights, the buildings looked like enormous locked boxes hiding everything the city preferred not to remember.

The foundation's advisers had secured a temporary court order protecting hospital funds, but Raymond was still missing. Investigators believed he might attempt to retrieve records from a financial archive kept in a leased office near the docks.

Dominic waited at police headquarters while Lena coordinated the search. His hands lay flat on a conference table, but the tendons stood out. Waiting had never been one of the skills that made him powerful.

Bella sat across from him with a paper cup of tea. She had been invited to provide a clarification about Victor's movements, not to join any operation. The ordinary cup seemed absurd after so many conversations about a crystal glass.

“You're quieter than you were at the party,” she said. Dominic looked up. “At the party, I thought anger could solve everything.” Bella considered the answer. “And now?”

“Now I know anger can be useful for about three seconds. After that, it usually makes you miss the person moving behind you.” Bella smiled faintly. “Three seconds can still change a life.”

A technician entered with the latest findings. A set of recovered financial records showed that Raymond had been diverting money intended for medical equipment through companies he secretly controlled.

The documents also implicated several associates who had helped disguise the transfers. Investigators were preparing requests to seize the relevant accounts and prevent further misuse of foundation resources.

Dominic learned that some of the diverted money came from businesses he himself had established during the most violent years of his career. Elena had been trying to separate legitimate charitable work from the darker structures surrounding it.

The revelation forced him to confront a painful truth. Even if Raymond had directed the scheme, the conditions that made it possible had grown inside Dominic's own empire.

“She tried to clean up what I refused to look at,” he said. Bella did not offer an easy reassurance. “Then don't let her work end with finding one bad man.”

At 11:43 p.m., police located Raymond near the waterfront office. He had entered using an old access code but appeared surprised to find the building's security systems active and the account records already preserved.

Officers secured the exterior and requested that he surrender. Raymond spoke through a closed door, insisting he wanted Dominic present before he would discuss the missing funds or Elena's death.

Lena refused to trade a civilian's safety for a suspect's demands. She maintained communication, arranged a negotiator, and made clear that Raymond would receive a lawful hearing if he came out.

Raymond laughed bitterly through the intercom. “Dominic always needs somebody else to do the difficult part.” Dominic, listening over an authorized call, did not respond. He knew Raymond wanted to provoke him.

For four years, Raymond had used that provocation as a weapon, steering the Moretti brothers into arguments while he controlled the contracts, accounts, and carefully selected pieces of information.

Inside the office, a red status light blinked on a desktop terminal. Raymond tried to initiate a remote transfer, but the disputed accounts had already been restricted under the court order.

The screen displayed an error. He struck the desk with his fist, then stopped, suddenly aware that the world had become too small for the grand performance he had prepared.

At police headquarters, the negotiator's voice remained patient. She explained that officers were prepared to enter if necessary, but that a peaceful surrender remained possible. The pause that followed lasted almost a minute.

Then the office door opened. Raymond stepped out with his hands visible and his face pale beneath the harsh exterior lights. Officers took him into custody without anyone being hurt.

Dominic closed his eyes as Lena relayed the news. For the first time since the gala, he allowed himself to feel relief before searching for the next threat.

Raymond had been arrested, but arrest was not a trial, and suspicion was not yet conviction. Lena reminded everyone that the evidence would be tested in court and that Elena's case was still being investigated.

The next morning, Raymond's lawyers challenged the authenticity of the recovered recordings. Forensic examiners compared the audio with independently documented samples, while financial investigators reviewed the chain of records.

Daniel Mercer identified the contractor who had worked on Elena's vehicle. The contractor, confronted with purchase documents and travel records, agreed to cooperate in exchange for consideration by prosecutors.

His statement described Raymond's instructions to interfere with the car before Elena's final drive. The new evidence prompted authorities to reopen the death investigation formally, with experts assigned to examine its technical findings.

When Dominic heard the news, he walked alone into the mansion's empty ballroom. The polished floor no longer held even a shadow of spilled wine. Staff had arranged the chairs exactly as they had stood before the party.

He stopped where Bella had struck him. It was remarkable how ordinary the place looked. Nothing in the marble revealed the moment that had changed every relationship in his life.

Marco entered quietly. “Should we put the ballroom back into service?” he asked. Dominic regarded the glittering chandeliers. “Not yet. There's something I want to do here before we host another celebration.”

He called the foundation's independent board and asked them to plan a public meeting in the room. He would discuss governance changes, new financial safeguards, and the separation of the foundation from his private business interests.

Marco nodded. He had expected a victory party, perhaps champagne and speeches about enemies defeated. Instead, Dominic seemed to be preparing the most uncomfortable speech of his life.

Near midnight, Bella received a text from Naomi. It contained a photograph of the hospital's brightly illuminated entrance and a simple message: ALL SYSTEMS NORMAL. CHILDREN SLEEPING SAFELY.

Bella placed the phone on her bedside table and finally slept without leaving the lamp on. Beyond the city, dawn began to brighten the river, touching the warehouse roofs and the hospital windows with the same pale light.
