Chapter 7 - THE UNEDITED HOUR

The full video arrived on a Thursday morning, not as a dramatic anonymous leak but through the careful cooperation of a wedding guest and her attorney. Its original file remained on the guest's device.

Lena watched with the legal team as a technician verified its timestamps and continuity. The footage was imperfect, partly obscured by floral columns, but it showed the attack in the order it occurred.

Vanessa pulled the veil. Evelyn fell. Maya rushed into frame and knelt beside her. Vanessa slapped Maya, reached for the shears, and lunged before the shove sent her toward the unstable display.

No edited caption could change that sequence. Daniel watched once, then pushed back his chair. His face had gone very still, and Evelyn knew he was trying not to fracture in front of everyone.

"I invited her to stand beside us," he said. "I gave her a place in the ceremony." Evelyn reached for his hand. "She was offered love. She chose to treat it as a contest."

Their attorney filed the original material with the police and requested appropriate protective measures after Maya's threatening voicemail and Nora's report about the visitor. She reminded them the investigation would take time.

Meanwhile, the foundation board met to discuss Lena's preliminary findings. The atmosphere was tense, but the trustees agreed to preserve records, restrict financial access, and commission a broader review.

Vanessa attended with legal counsel. She wore a cream suit that made her look almost bridal, though the expression in her eyes had none of Evelyn's former hope or anticipation.

"I supported this foundation for years," Vanessa told the board. "Now I'm being publicly destroyed because my brother believes a woman he's known for a fraction of that time."

Lena did not argue about motives. She placed the payment records on the screen, explained the gaps between purchases and delivered goods, and identified the vendor relationships that required further verification.

The trustees asked Vanessa to explain specific approvals. She answered one question with a date, another with a vague reference to emergencies, and a third by criticizing Evelyn's professional qualifications.

Evelyn had chosen not to attend the first financial hearing. She did not need to sit inside every room where her name was used as a weapon. Her written technical findings were available to the auditors.

Instead, she met Maya near the river for lunch. The wind lifted the edge of her scarf, revealing a shorter section of dark hair where her stylist had carefully trimmed around the healing area.

"I thought I'd hate seeing it," Evelyn admitted. Maya studied her friend's reflection in the café window. "I see a woman who survived something that was meant to make her disappear."

"I don't always feel like that woman," Evelyn said. "Some mornings I hear fabric tearing before I'm fully awake." Maya stopped smiling, because some truths deserved quiet attention rather than encouragement.

Evelyn had begun seeing a counselor to work through the fear. The appointments had not erased her memories, but they had given her ways to return to the present when her body expected danger.

At the board meeting, Nora spoke through prepared notes. Her hands trembled as she explained how she had been pressured to approve transfers without the required dual review.

She brought contemporaneous emails and her own logs. Lena had already verified several of the records. The board heard not only an accusation, but a chain of decisions supported by dates and signatures.

Then Iris's photograph appeared beside the security access report. The badge visible in the image matched one checked out to the event contractor, whose own statement placed him outside at the time.

The security system had recorded a manual request to suspend the aisle cameras under Daniel's event profile. The log alone did not identify the user, and the board's attorney stressed that limitation.

But a message preserved on Vanessa's phone by the event vendor, obtained voluntarily during the inquiry, showed her asking how to perform a temporary privacy shutdown without sending notifications to guests.

The venue manager explained that such a shutdown required an authorized login and a confirmation on the terminal. It was not something that could happen because a camera happened to malfunction.

Daniel had not entered the corridor. Several guests confirmed he was in the outer garden greeting arriving relatives during those minutes, and their original photographs placed him there.

The board suspended Vanessa from her finance-director role pending final findings. Catherine listened without interrupting. When the vote passed, she looked as though a cherished illusion had finally become too heavy to lift.

After the meeting, Catherine approached Daniel in a quiet hallway. "I thought I could keep her from falling apart," she said. "Every time I covered for her, I told myself it was the last time."

Daniel looked at his mother with grief rather than triumph. "You kept making the consequences land on everyone else. We all learned to organize our lives around her anger."

Catherine began to cry, silently and without the usual effort to conceal it. "How do I repair this?" Daniel thought of Evelyn, of Nora's frightened voice, and of the greenhouse standing empty.

"Start by telling the truth even when it makes you look bad," he answered. "Then let people decide what they need from you. You can't manage their forgiveness."

That night, the longer wedding video was released publicly through counsel with the victims' agreement, alongside a statement asking viewers not to harass anyone involved. Its impact was immediate but complicated.

Some strangers apologized for believing the edited clip. Others moved instantly from attacking Evelyn to threatening Vanessa. Evelyn refused to celebrate. She wanted accountability, not another crowd intoxicated by humiliation.

"This is what they never understood," she told Daniel. "Winning doesn't have to mean making someone else helpless." He stood beside her at the window while the city hummed beyond the glass.

The next morning, an investigator called to say the financial evidence had been referred for further examination. Evelyn heard Daniel quietly repeat the words, and knew the family was approaching a reckoning nobody could postpone.
