Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN IN CHAMPAGNE SILK

The first thing Emily Carter heard was the silver tray striking the edge of her chair. The second was Victoria Blackwood's voice, sharp enough to silence an entire ballroom.

"Know your place!" Victoria shouted. Before Emily could move, the billionaire overturned a mountain of spaghetti and thick red sauce directly over her head.

The sauce soaked Emily's brown hair, slid across her cheeks, and spread like a terrible stain over the champagne-colored dress she had saved for three months to buy.

Emily gasped, one hand rising toward her face while the other moved instinctively over her seven-month belly. Around her, hundreds of elegant guests stood motionless beneath enormous crystal chandeliers.

Victoria did not give her time to stand. Her jeweled fingers closed around Emily's upper arm and hauled her upright with a brutal, impatient jerk.

"You came here dressed like you belong to this family," Victoria hissed. "I'll show everyone exactly what you are."

She caught the delicate shoulder seam of Emily's gown and pulled. The fabric ripped audibly, exposing the intact, opaque lining beneath it. Emily stumbled, terrified that another tug would send her falling.

A champagne flute slipped from somebody's fingers. It broke against the marble, yet the sound seemed distant compared with Emily's heartbeat and the tiny movement beneath her protecting palms.

The donors had come to Blackwood Manor for a charity gala, not a public humiliation. No one stepped forward. Some looked away; others lifted phones with shaking hands.

Emily searched their faces for help. She had once believed that a crowded room could protect a person. Tonight, the beautiful ballroom taught her something colder.

At three and a half seconds after the assault began, Sarah Carter burst through the open ballroom doors. Her black pantsuit cut a dark line through the sea of glittering dresses.

She stopped only long enough to understand the scene: her pregnant younger sister drenched in sauce, clutching a torn gown, and Victoria standing over her like a victorious judge.

"Don't touch my sister!" Sarah cried. She moved toward Emily, but Victoria intercepted her beside the long buffet table glittering with crystal and polished silver.

Victoria struck first. Her open palm cracked across Sarah's cheek, snapping her head to the side. Sarah felt heat bloom beneath her skin and tasted the metallic edge of anger.

The older sister did not answer immediately. She drew one steady breath, found Emily behind Victoria, and saw that Emily was still standing with both hands over her belly.

Victoria raised her hand again. Sarah slipped sideways as the second slap cut through empty air, then drove a single hard punch into Victoria's jaw.

The billionaire staggered backward, her emerald gown swaying, and caught herself against a decorative wooden chair. Astonishment flashed through her eyes before outrage returned.

"How dare you!" Victoria cried. She seized the heavy chair by its backrest and jerked it upward, holding it between herself and Sarah.

Sarah's eyes flicked from the raised chair to Emily. She kicked the chair's lower frame, sending it twisting from Victoria's hands and crashing harmlessly across the marble.

The noise jolted the crowd awake. Guests hurried away from the falling chair, leaving a clear space between the sisters, the furious billionaire, and the towering dessert display.

"Back away from her," Sarah said. Her voice was low now, controlled in a way that made the warning far more frightening than a scream.

Victoria lunged forward again, her diamond necklace swinging. Sarah caught the movement and shoved her firmly backward by both shoulders, away from Emily and the open floor.

Victoria stumbled into the banquet table. Her weight struck the edge; its slender front legs folded under the impact. The lavish buffet collapsed in a deafening avalanche of crystal, silver, and dessert.

Champagne flowed beneath the ruined white cloth. Towers of pastries broke apart. Victoria landed amid fallen serving platters, staring upward with an expression that seemed incapable of accepting what had happened.

Sarah stood between her and Emily, breathing hard. "Touch her again," she said quietly, "and you'll answer for it." No one in the ballroom moved.

For one remarkable second, the mighty Victoria Blackwood looked small. Then her gaze found the cluster of recording phones, and something more calculating replaced her shock.

"Security!" she screamed. "Arrest that woman! She attacked me in my own home!" Two guards took a hesitant step toward Sarah before stopping at Emily's cry.

"She hurt me first," Emily whispered. It was barely audible, but a nearby microphone, still connected to the gala's live recording system, picked up every word.

A young server named Maya stood beside a gold-trimmed column. She had been carrying replacement water glasses when the attack began, and her phone was still recording.

The guests had witnessed everything, yet Maya understood that wealthy people could change a story simply by speaking first. She turned her screen toward the closest donor.

"She dumped food on a pregnant woman," Maya said, unable to keep the tremor from her voice. "I have the whole thing."

Sarah barely heard her. She had already slipped off her black jacket and wrapped it around Emily's shoulders, covering the torn seam and the sauce-soaked dress.

"Look at me," Sarah whispered. "Are you dizzy? Does your stomach hurt?" Emily shook her head, but the tears she had held back began to fall.

"I was supposed to tell them about the mothers' shelter," Emily managed. "I wasn't supposed to sign anything. That's why she did it."

Sarah went still. "What were you supposed to sign?" Emily glanced toward Victoria, who was climbing out of the wreckage with help from a stunned guest.

"Daniel's papers," Emily whispered. "The ones he told me never to sign." She pressed her palm harder against her belly, as if she could protect the child from the name itself.

Daniel Blackwood had been Victoria's only son and Emily's husband. Four months earlier, a rain-slick highway had taken his life and left questions neither sister knew how to ask.

Victoria had forbidden Emily from speaking about him in public. The gala invitation had promised reconciliation, an apology, and a chance to announce a new home for expectant mothers.

Emily had wanted desperately to believe it. She had arrived with a short speech folded inside her clutch and Daniel's wedding ring hanging from a chain beneath her dress.

Now Sarah saw that invitation for what it was: a carefully lit trap. Victoria had summoned Emily before hundreds of people to humiliate her into surrendering something Daniel had left behind.

At the far end of the room, two police officers entered with a uniformed supervisor. Someone had called emergency services during the confrontation, and the mansion's private security could no longer control the doors.

Victoria straightened her gown and began speaking before the officers reached the broken buffet. "This woman assaulted me," she said, pointing a manicured finger at Sarah.

Sarah ignored the accusation. "My sister is seven months pregnant," she told the supervisor. "She was grabbed and publicly attacked. She needs medical attention before anyone starts taking statements."

The officer looked from Sarah's reddening cheek to Emily's torn dress and the sauce drying in her hair. Then his eyes fell upon Maya's phone, held steadily above the debris.

"We will examine all available footage," he answered. "Nobody is leaving until we've identified the people directly involved." Victoria's perfect smile faltered almost imperceptibly.

Beyond the ballroom windows, black trees moved in the October wind. Inside, Emily felt a gentle kick beneath her palm and silently counted it as a promise.

She had survived the worst three seconds of her life. Yet as she watched Victoria whisper furiously into a lawyer's ear, she understood that the night was only beginning.

Sarah squeezed her hand. "You're not signing anything," she said. "Not tonight. Not because somebody frightens you. We'll find out what Daniel wanted you to know."

May you like

Emily nodded, clutching her sister's sleeve. From beneath Victoria's ruined emerald skirt, a slim cream envelope had fallen onto the wet floor, its black lettering visible through spilled champagne.

Maya read the name before a guard could pick it up: THE DANIEL BLACKWOOD MATERNAL TRUST. The words turned an ugly public assault into the beginning of a much larger mystery.
