Chapter 13 - THE MAN WHO OWNS THE LAW

"Who is this?" Daniel snarled, his knuckles whitening as he gripped the phone. "If you come near my son again, I will tear you apart with my bare hands."

A soft, mocking chuckle reverberated through the speaker. "Charming sentiment, Daniel. Raw, primal... exactly what one expects from a blue-collar contractor trying to play house with women outside his league. But violence won't cure what ails little Noah. And threats won't stop the legal machinery already grinding your life into powder."

"Where is Claire?" Daniel demanded, his eyes scanning the dense woods behind the fence.

"Miss Sterling is currently under my care," the man replied smoothly. "Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Julian Vance. I am Senior Partner at Vance, Sterling & Croft. And more importantly, I am Claire’s father."

Daniel felt the ground tilt beneath him. Claire had always told him her father was dead—that he had passed away when she was a teenager, leaving her with an inheritance and emotional scars. It was one of the many lies she had used to manufacture Daniel's sympathy, to make him play the protector.

"You're alive," Daniel breathed.

"Very much so," Julian Vance said. "And profoundly irritated. You see, Daniel, you made a grave miscalculation. When you released that viral security footage of Claire slapping you and humiliating your brat beside the wedding cake, you didn't just ruin a wedding. You destroyed a twenty-million-dollar merger between the Sterling trust and an international hospitality conglomerate that required Claire to maintain an unblemished public reputation."

"She abused my son!" Daniel roared. "She terrorized a four-year-old boy on camera!"

"She disciplined an unruly child who ruined an eight-thousand-dollar cake," Julian corrected coldly. "And public opinion is a remarkably pliable substance, Daniel. With enough capital, any narrative can be rewritten. Right now, three major networks are preparing an exclusive investigative piece detailing how an abusive, mentally unstable ex-fiancé doctored surveillance video to extort a grieving socialite."

"No one will believe that garbage," Daniel spit back.

"They will when the family court judge signs the emergency custody transfer at two o'clock today," Julian said, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper.

Daniel’s lungs seized. "Custody? You're insane. Noah is my biological son! Claire has zero legal claim to him!"

"Are you certain of that, Daniel?" Julian’s voice was dripping with venomous triumph. "Check your safe. Check the medical guardianship papers you signed when you were in the ICU after your crane accident two years ago. Claire was very thorough. You gave her full co-parenting authority, countersigned by a notary public. And right now, Noah’s pediatric records show a documented history of severe poisoning symptoms—symptoms that our team of medical experts will testify were administered by *you*."

"You're lying!"

"Take your boy to the emergency room, Daniel," Julian whispered. "Have them run a heavy metals panel. Look for thallium. And then ask yourself: do you want to spend the rest of your life in a state penitentiary while Claire raises your son in London, or are you going to bring the original master hard drives to my office before noon?"
