Chapter 6 - THE GIFT BY THE WATER

Daniel canceled the family photo session, but Claire quietly convinced him not to cancel the entire day. She said Grant would know they had discovered the plot if everyone suddenly disappeared from the estate. Naomi agreed. A controlled environment could expose whoever triggered the pool command.

The plan was simple in theory and terrifying in practice. Ethan would not be used as bait. He would remain inside with Rosa, two officers, and a locked interior door. Daniel would pretend the family schedule had not changed. Claire would wear the ivory dress she had already ordered. Cameras installed by Naomi’s team would record independently from the Mercer network.

Grant was told nothing. At eleven that morning, sunlight flooded the terrace. The pool looked impossibly blue. White flowers stood in tall glass vases beside the outdoor table, leftovers from the canceled photo styling. Claire stepped from the house in her lace dress and diamond necklace, looking like a bride arriving at the wrong wedding.

Daniel waited near the pool in a dark suit. Neither of them spoke for several seconds. “You don’t have to do this,” he finally said. Claire gave him a sad smile. “Yes, I do.”

“Why?” “Because I helped build the trap around your family. Maybe I didn’t know how far Grant would go, but I helped.” Daniel looked away. Inside the house, Rosa sat with Ethan at the kitchen table. The boy had been told they were playing a safety game. An officer stood near the hallway, another at the service entrance.

At 11:14, Naomi’s voice came through Daniel’s hidden earpiece. “Movement on the east service road.” A black sedan had stopped beyond the estate’s rear wall.

At 11:16, the regular camera network flickered. At 11:17, twenty-seven seconds disappeared from the official feed. Naomi’s independent cameras kept recording.

A side door on the lower level opened. No one came through. Then Ethan’s voice sounded over Daniel’s earpiece. “Dad?” Daniel’s stomach dropped.

Rosa shouted in the background. “Ethan, wait!” Daniel turned toward the house. The kitchen door burst open and Ethan ran onto the terrace holding a small wrapped box.

“Where did you get that?” Daniel shouted. Ethan looked confused. “Claire said there was a present by the water.” Claire’s face went white. “I didn’t say that.”

A voice came through a hidden speaker near the pool gate. It was Claire’s voice. “The present is by the water, Ethan. Go look before your father comes home.”

The recording was perfect. Grant had cloned her voice. Rosa ran outside. “Ethan, stop!” The boy had already reached the pool gate. The latch clicked by itself.

Naomi shouted through Daniel’s earpiece. “Remote trigger! Get him away from the edge!” Daniel sprinted. Ethan stepped through the gate, still holding the box. The lid popped open. Inside was a tiny remote-controlled toy boat, the same model Emily had bought him before she died.

Ethan gasped. “Mom’s boat.” Daniel understood immediately why Grant had chosen it. The boy forgot every warning and moved toward the pool. Claire ran after him.

Then the terrace lights flashed once despite the bright sun. A sharp electrical crack sounded from the pool equipment housing. The automatic cover mechanism jerked violently, snapping a cable across the deck.

Claire stumbled backward to avoid it. Ethan flinched, lost his balance, and fell into the water. The toy boat slipped from his hands and floated beside him.

For one frozen beat, nobody moved. Then Rosa jumped. She hit the pool fully dressed, her black-and-white uniform blooming around her in the water. Ethan sank beneath the surface. Rosa dove after him without hesitation.

Daniel reached the edge and dropped to his knees. “Ethan!” Rosa surfaced with the boy, but he was coughing and thrashing. She wrapped an arm around him and kicked toward the nearest steps.

Claire stood near the glass railing, shaking. Her phone buzzed. She looked down. Daniel saw the message preview on her screen from ten feet away.

YOU FAILED. FIX IT OR HE LEARNS EVERYTHING. Below the message was a photograph of Emily in a hospital bed. Daniel crossed the terrace and took the phone from Claire’s hand.

“Who sent this?” Claire’s lips trembled. “Grant.” “No more half-truths.” “I swear—” Daniel’s own phone buzzed. A file had arrived from an unknown number.

He opened it. The clip showed Claire, earlier that morning, entering the pool corridor and reaching toward the security panel. Without context it looked exactly like sabotage.

Then another audio file appeared. Claire’s cloned voice told Ethan to go to the water. Someone was trying to make Daniel believe his wife had attempted to kill his son.

But Daniel had seen enough real lies from Claire that the false ones fit too easily among them. He raised his phone inches from her face. “Tell me that isn’t you.”

Behind them, Rosa dragged Ethan toward the pool steps. Claire stared at the video, horrified. Daniel’s voice turned cold. “Tell me.” Claire backed toward the glass railing. And somewhere beyond the estate wall, a black sedan pulled away before the police could reach it.
