Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN AT THE BOTTOM OF THE STAIRS

========================================================================

The woman standing in the foyer held a leather folder and a rain-darkened umbrella. She looked to be in her forties, neatly dressed, professional, and immediately uncomfortable with the silence above her. “Claire?” Daniel stepped into view at the top of the stairs. “Who are you?”

The woman looked surprised. “Daniel Hale?” “Yes.” Her expression shifted. “My name is Mara Voss. I’m the family intake liaison from Northbrook.” Ethan moved behind Daniel. Claire closed her eyes. Only for a second. Mara saw it. Then she saw Robert holding the laptop.

She saw the opened envelopes on the desk. And she saw Ethan gripping the back of his father’s shirt. Her professional smile disappeared. “I was told Mr. Hale would not be present.” Daniel descended one step. “Who told you that?” Mara looked at Claire.

No one had to ask again. Claire stepped into the hallway. “This is not the time.” Mara’s gaze remained on Daniel. “I received an emergency request to finalize Ethan’s transport tonight.” Daniel stopped. “Tonight?” Claire snapped, “That wasn’t the agreement.” Mara turned toward her.

“You changed the agreement at four seventeen this afternoon.” Robert came to the landing. “Daniel.” He handed him the laptop. The Northbrook confirmation remained open. Daniel looked at Mara. “My signature on these forms is forged.” Mara went still. Rain ticked against the foyer windows.

For several seconds, nobody spoke. Then Mara slowly closed the leather folder. “I need to be very clear.” Daniel waited. “If that signature is not yours, Ethan cannot go anywhere with us.” Claire stepped forward. “He authorized me verbally.” Daniel looked at her. “No, I didn’t.”

“You told me months ago that I should handle things at home.” “That is not authorization to send my son away.” Mara’s face tightened. “I was told Mr. Hale had agreed but was unwilling to participate directly because the child had become emotionally manipulative.” Ethan lowered his head.

Daniel saw it. “That’s false.” Mara looked troubled. Claire raised her voice. “You don’t know what he’s like.” Robert descended the stairs. “We know what she’s like.” Claire glared at him. Mara noticed the red mark still visible on Robert’s cheek.

Then she noticed the metal restraint in Daniel’s hand. Her eyes fixed on it. “What is that?” Nobody answered immediately. Daniel lifted it. “This was around my son’s ankle when I got home.” Mara’s face changed completely. Claire rushed in. “It was a safety restraint.”

Mara looked at Ethan. “Was he a danger to himself?” “No,” Daniel said. Claire answered at the same time. “Yes.” Mara stared between them. Ethan whispered, “I was sitting under the table.” Everyone looked at him. He swallowed. “She didn’t want the guests to see me.”

Mara’s shoulders dropped. The leather folder suddenly seemed too heavy in her hand. “I think I should leave.” Daniel stepped down another stair. “No.” Claire snapped, “Daniel.” He ignored her. “I need to know exactly what you were told.” Mara hesitated. Then she nodded. “Fine.”

They moved into the living room. Robert stayed close to Ethan. Claire remained standing. Daniel did not offer her a seat. Mara opened her folder. Inside were printed emails, intake forms, and a schedule. “I was told Ethan had escalating behavioral episodes.” Daniel nodded toward the upstairs study.

“We found the report.” “I was also told the school counselor supported residential placement.” Daniel’s eyes narrowed. “She doesn’t.” Mara looked at her papers. “There is an email.” “From whom?” “From the address listed for your family account.” Daniel already knew. Claire had used his email before.

Mara continued. “The application states Ethan had attempted to run away twice.” Ethan looked at Daniel. “That’s not true.” Daniel nodded. “I know.” Mara checked another page. “It says he threatened his stepmother with kitchen scissors.” Ethan’s face went white. “No.” Robert put a hand on his shoulder.

Daniel stared at Claire. She stared back. “Did you write that?” “He waved them around.” Ethan shook his head. “I was cutting cardboard.” Claire’s tone sharpened. “You were angry.” “My planet rings ripped.” The detail was so small that it made the lie enormous.

Daniel remembered the ruined solar-system project. He looked at Claire. “That was the project you threw in the garage.” Claire said nothing. Mara turned another page. “There is also a recommendation for medication evaluation.” Daniel’s voice dropped. “By Dr. Feld?” Mara nodded. Daniel closed his eyes.

Claire’s own therapist. Not Ethan’s doctor. Not his counselor. Not anyone authorized to diagnose him. Robert sat slowly. “This was built.” Mara looked at him. “What?” “A story.” Robert pointed toward the file. “She built a story around him.” Claire laughed sharply.

“You’re all acting like I invented a child who has feelings.” Daniel turned. “No. You invented danger.” Claire’s eyes flashed. “You weren’t here.” Daniel absorbed that. This time, he did not defend himself. “You’re right.” Everyone went quiet. “I wasn’t here enough.” Ethan looked at him. Daniel continued.

“That is my failure.” Claire’s face softened with triumph. Then Daniel finished. “But my absence did not give you permission to terrorize him.” The triumph vanished. Mara lowered her eyes. Daniel looked at her. “You said transport was tonight.” “Yes.” “Why?” Mara looked at Claire again.

“She requested immediate intake after dinner.” Claire’s face tightened. Mara continued. “She said once the guests left, Ethan would likely become violent.” Robert almost laughed. “Instead, she chained him before they arrived.” Mara said nothing. Daniel looked at the payment page. “What about this trust transfer?”

Mara examined it. “Northbrook received a twenty-eight-thousand-dollar deposit from the Laura Hale Education Trust.” Daniel felt his stomach drop. “That account requires my approval.” Mara nodded. “The payment authorization has your electronic signature.” “I didn’t approve it.” Claire moved toward the hallway. Daniel noticed. “Don’t.” She stopped.

Mara closed the folder. “I need to report this to our compliance office.” Claire turned on her. “You cannot.” “I have to.” “You took the payment.” “Based on fraudulent documents, apparently.” Claire’s breathing quickened. “You’ll destroy everything.” Mara looked at Ethan. Something in her face hardened.

“That may be necessary.” Claire suddenly grabbed the leather folder. Mara held on. Pages scattered across the rug. Robert stood. Daniel moved between Claire and Ethan. Claire released the folder and backed away. Her composure finally broke. “You have no idea what that boy has cost me.”

The room froze. Ethan heard every word. Daniel’s face became almost expressionless. “What did he cost you?” Claire stared at him. “My marriage.” Daniel shook his head. “No.” “My life.” “No.” “My chance to have anything that was ours.” Ethan’s fingers closed around Robert’s hand.

Daniel looked at his wife as if he were seeing a stranger. “You think my son stole something from you.” Claire laughed through tears. “He was always there.” “Yes.” “Laura was always there.” Daniel went still. Claire pointed toward the staircase. “Her room. Her furniture. Her trust.

Her father calling every week. Her son looking at me like I was trespassing.” Robert’s voice turned cold. “You were.” Claire stared at him. Robert continued. “Not in the house.” He looked at Ethan. “In the boy’s life.” Claire flinched as if struck.

Daniel picked up the scattered papers. One page had landed face up. It was not a Northbrook form. It was a photocopy of a bank authorization. At the bottom was Daniel’s forged signature. Above it was a transfer request. Not twenty-eight thousand dollars. Two hundred and forty thousand.

Destination account: C. Mercer Holdings. Daniel looked at Claire. Her maiden name was Mercer. The room became silent again. Mara stared at the page. Robert stood slowly. Ethan did not understand the number. But he understood the fear on Claire’s face. Daniel held the paper up.

“What is C. Mercer Holdings?” Claire said nothing. Daniel took one step toward her. “What did you do?” Claire backed into the hallway. Then she turned and ran.
