Chapter 3 - THE ENVELOPE THAT DISAPPEARED

The ambulance ride turned the world into flashing red light and clipped medical questions. Evelyn lay strapped to the stretcher while monitors recorded her pulse and the baby’s heartbeat.

Every electronic beep felt louder than the siren. Liam sat beside her, one hand braced against the wall as the vehicle turned through traffic.

The paramedic closest to Evelyn spoke calmly. “The fetal heart rate is present and steady. That’s encouraging. Evelyn let out a breath she had been holding.

“Is he okay? “We need imaging and obstetric assessment before anyone can promise that. The honesty frightened her, but she respected it. Liam saw tears gather at the corners of her eyes.

“Daniel used to hate hospitals,” she whispered. Liam smiled faintly. “He hated needles. Hospitals just happened to contain them. For the first time since the attack, Evelyn almost laughed.

The sound never came. Her face tightened again. “What if Victor destroys the envelope? Liam looked toward the rear doors. “He probably already took it.

“Then we need another copy. “Who sent it? “Daniel’s attorney, Martin Keene. Liam’s expression changed. Martin had represented the Hale family for more than twenty years.

If Martin had sent suspicious trust amendments to Evelyn, he had either developed a conscience or entered a trap. “Did he call you first?

“No. “Did he sign the note? “No. Liam absorbed that. “Then don’t contact him yet. Evelyn turned her head. “You think Victor set it up?

“I think someone wanted you to have those pages. We need to know who. At St. Anne’s Medical Center, a trauma team and obstetric staff were waiting.

The next forty minutes passed in fragments. Hospital lights. Cold gel during an ultrasound. A nurse asking Evelyn to rate her pain. A physician examining the bleeding.

Liam standing outside the curtain because he refused to go farther than staff allowed. Then finally, an obstetrician named Dr. Mira Patel pulled a chair beside Evelyn’s bed.

“The baby is stable. Evelyn’s entire body softened. She covered her face. Dr. Patel continued gently. “You have significant bruising and stress-related contractions, but at this moment we are not seeing placental separation.

The bleeding appears to be from trauma to surrounding tissue, not the uterus.” Liam closed his eyes. Relief hit him so hard he had to sit.

“We’re keeping you overnight,” Dr. Patel said. “Possibly longer. We want continuous monitoring. Evelyn nodded. “Thank you. The doctor’s expression hardened slightly. “The police are outside.

They’ll want a statement when you’re ready. Evelyn looked toward Liam. “I’m ready now. He shook his head. “You don’t have to prove anything tonight.

“Yes, I do. Her voice was quiet but steady. “For years everyone around Victor has waited until they felt strong enough to challenge him.

That’s how he wins. He makes people wait.” Liam did not argue. Two detectives entered twenty minutes later. Detective Sarah Cole did most of the talking.

Her partner, Detective Aaron Ruiz, took notes. Cole had already seen one guest’s video. “We have clear footage of Mr. Hale striking you with the umbrella handle.

Evelyn swallowed. “And Liam? “Also recorded. Liam leaned against the wall. “Good. Cole studied him. “We also have footage of you pushing Mr. Hale into the pool.

“I did. “And later redirecting him into the cocktail table. “I did that too. Evelyn immediately spoke. “He was attacking us. Cole nodded. “The video matters.

That sentence eased something in the room. Video mattered. Witnesses mattered. Evidence mattered. Victor’s version was no longer the only version. Evelyn told them about the trust documents.

Cole’s pen stopped. “What exactly did you believe was forged? “My husband’s signature. “Your husband being Daniel Hale? “Yes. “The Daniel Hale who died last year?

“Yes. Ruiz looked up from his notebook. “Car accident on Coast Highway? Liam glanced at him. “You remember it? “Everybody did. Victor’s only son had died when his car left a rain-slicked road and struck a barrier.

The death had made national news because Daniel was expected to inherit Hale Meridian Holdings. Victor had publicly called it the worst day of his life.

Privately, he had taken control of nearly everything Daniel left behind. Evelyn had been too devastated to fight. Until now. Cole asked, “What changed in the trust?

Evelyn looked down at the hospital blanket. “The original trust gave control of Daniel’s voting shares to our child when he turned twenty-five, with me as guardian until then.”

“And the version you received? “Transferred control to Victor permanently. The detectives exchanged a look. “That is a substantial change. “There’s more. Evelyn hesitated.

“The amendment was dated four days before Daniel died. Liam pushed away from the wall. “You never told me that. “I only saw the date this morning.

Cole leaned forward. “Did Daniel ever discuss changing the trust? “No. “Did he discuss conflict with his father? Evelyn remembered late-night arguments behind closed doors.

Daniel staring out windows. Daniel deleting messages from his phone. Daniel saying, I should have stopped covering for him years ago. “Yes,” she said.

“About money? “About control. Cole closed her notebook. “We’ll need the documents. “They’re gone. “Who had them last? Evelyn looked at Liam. “Victor. Cole’s jaw tightened.

“Then we’ll address that. After the detectives left, Evelyn slept for nearly an hour. Liam did not. He walked to the vending machines, bought coffee he barely touched, and called the older guest who had recorded the first strike.

His name was Harold Trent, a retired federal judge. Harold agreed to send the full video directly to Detective Cole. Then he said something unexpected.

“There was a man upstairs. Liam straightened. “What man? “Second-floor window above the terrace. He was filming too. “Could you see him? “No. But I saw the lens.

Evelyn had seen the curtain move. Liam’s pulse increased. “Did anyone else notice? “I don’t know. “Which room? “East side. Third window from the corner.

Liam wrote it down. When he returned to Evelyn’s room, she was awake. “You found something. He sat beside her. “There was another camera.

Her eyes narrowed. “Security? “No. Someone standing behind a window. The hospital room seemed colder. Evelyn looked at the locked door. “Victor records everything at that house.

“You think it was one of his people? “I don’t know. Her phone buzzed on the bedside table. Both of them looked at it.

Unknown number. A single message appeared. HE TOOK THE WRONG ENVELOPE. Liam picked up the phone without opening anything else. Another message arrived. DANIEL LEFT THE ORIGINAL WITH ME.

Then a third. IF YOU WANT THE TRUTH ABOUT HIS DEATH, COME ALONE. Evelyn stared at the screen. Her relief vanished. “Who is that?

May you like

Liam shook his head. Before either of them could answer, the unknown sender transmitted a photograph. It showed Daniel Hale standing in a parking garage.

Alive. Worried. Looking directly at the camera. In his hand was a small black drive. The timestamp was two hours before his fatal crash.
