Chapter 8 - THE BOARDROOM REVOLT

Hale Meridian Tower had forty-eight floors of mirrored glass and a lobby designed to make visitors feel small. Evelyn had once admired it. Daniel had not.

He used to say the building looked like his father had tried to turn intimidation into architecture. At 8:42 a.m., Evelyn entered through the main doors with Liam, Detective Cole, and an attorney representing Daniel’s estate.

Cameras crowded the sidewalk outside. Reporters shouted questions. Evelyn answered none of them. She wore a navy maternity dress, low shoes, and Daniel’s old watch on a chain beneath her collar.

The watch did not work. She wore it anyway. Inside the elevator, Liam noticed her fingers trembling. “You can still leave. “No. “That was not a challenge.

“I know. The elevator rose. Evelyn looked at their reflection in the polished doors. “I used to think courage meant not being afraid. Liam glanced at her.

“What do you think now? “That’s nonsense. The doors opened. The boardroom occupied the entire eastern corner of the forty-seventh floor. Ocean on one side.

City on the other. Victor was already there. He stood at the far end of the long walnut table wearing a dark charcoal suit.

No bandage remained near his temple. No trace of the pool remained on him. He looked again like the Victor Hale the world knew.

Until he saw Evelyn. His eyes dropped to her belly. Then to Liam. “Security,” he said. No one moved. Victor looked toward the company’s chief security officer.

The man cleared his throat. “Mr. Hale, the board authorized their attendance. The silence that followed was almost elegant. Victor slowly turned toward the directors.

“You authorized this? Board member Elaine Mercer answered. “We did. Elaine had served beside Victor for eleven years. She had never publicly opposed him.

Today, she did not look away. Victor took his seat. “This should be entertaining. The outside attorney hired by the board began with financial controls.

Then came surveillance contracts. Then political payments. Then the forged trust amendment. Victor denied personal knowledge of each item. He blamed subordinates. He blamed Owen.

He blamed Daniel. Finally, he blamed grief. “My son was unstable in the months before his death. Evelyn’s hand tightened beneath the table. Liam leaned slightly toward her.

“Breathe. She did. The board attorney continued. “Mr. Hale, did you order surveillance of Evelyn Carter? “No. A document appeared on the screen. Victor’s authorization code sat at the bottom.

He did not react. “Those codes are routinely delegated. Another document appeared. A private intelligence invoice described fertility-clinic monitoring. Evelyn felt sick. Victor looked at her.

For one moment, something like regret crossed his face. Then it disappeared. “I was protecting family assets. The room changed. Even Victor seemed to realize he had said too much.

Elaine Mercer leaned forward. “Family assets? Victor adjusted his cuff. “You know what I mean. “I would like you to explain what you mean.

Victor’s patience broke. “I mean Daniel was reckless. He married emotionally. He made decisions emotionally. He intended to place controlling shares into the hands of a child who did not even exist.”

Evelyn stood. Everyone looked at her. She had not planned to speak yet. But Victor had given her the opening. “My son exists. Victor stared at her.

“He is not an asset. No one interrupted. Evelyn continued. “Daniel knew exactly what he wanted. He wanted his child to inherit choices. Victor laughed softly.

“Daniel wanted approval. “Yes. The answer surprised him. Evelyn’s voice remained steady. “He wanted yours for most of his life. Victor’s expression hardened. “And look what independence bought him.

The words landed before he could pull them back. The entire room froze. Liam stood. Victor realized the mistake instantly. The board attorney raised one hand.

“Mr. Hale, what did you mean by that? Victor leaned back. “Nothing. Detective Cole, seated near the wall, watched him closely. “Nothing,” Victor repeated.

Evelyn felt her pulse hammering. She wanted to shout. Instead, she sat. The board attorney continued. They played Daniel’s recording. Victor’s face did not move when his son’s voice filled the room.

But his right hand slowly closed into a fist. I found a file on Evelyn. Several directors lowered their eyes. If an amendment appears with my signature, it is forged.

Victor stared at the screen. I’m meeting Martin tonight. After that, I’m going to the board. When the recording ended, nobody spoke. Then Elaine Mercer asked one question.

“Victor, did you forge Daniel’s signature? “No. The board attorney placed the original trust beside the amendment. A forensic examiner’s preliminary finding appeared on screen.

The amendment signature showed signs of digital replication. Victor’s attorney immediately objected. “This is not a courtroom. Elaine answered. “No. It is a boardroom.

She looked directly at Victor. “And this board no longer has confidence in you. The vote happened fifteen minutes later. Nine directors. Seven voted to suspend Victor immediately pending investigation.

One abstained. Victor cast the only vote against. For a man accustomed to applause, the quiet defeat was devastating. He stood. “You think this company survives without me?

Elaine folded her hands. “We are about to find out. Victor turned toward Evelyn. “This is what you wanted? She shook her head. “No.

“What, then? “My husband back. His expression flickered. “You can’t have that. “I know. She placed a hand over her belly. “But you don’t get to take what remains.

Victor stared at her for several seconds. Then he walked out. The doors closed behind him. Only then did Evelyn realize she was crying.

Liam stood beside her. Not touching. Waiting. She reached for his hand. He gave it immediately. Downstairs, reporters learned of Victor’s suspension before he reached the lobby.

By the time he stepped outside, the crowd was shouting his name. He ignored them. A black sedan waited at the curb. Victor got inside.

His attorney followed. “Say nothing,” Marcus warned. Victor stared through the tinted window. “Who gave the board the trust? “Martin. “Who authenticated the recording?

“Investigators. “Who brought Owen in? “The police. Victor’s jaw tightened. “Everyone suddenly found courage. Marcus looked at him. “No. Victor turned. “They found each other.

That answer stayed with Victor. At Margaret’s house that evening, Evelyn sat on the porch wrapped in a blanket. The sunset turned the clouds orange.

Liam brought two mugs of tea. “No caffeine,” he said. “You’re becoming unbearable. “It’s a gift. She took the mug. For several minutes, they watched cars pass.

Then Evelyn said, “Daniel would have hated today. Liam smiled faintly. “He would have spent the whole meeting doodling. “He drew terrible boats. “He thought they were excellent.

Evelyn laughed. The baby kicked. She stopped and pressed a hand against her belly. Liam looked alarmed. “What? “He moved. “Is that good? “Yes.

She took Liam’s hand and placed it gently against the side of her belly. Another kick came. Liam’s face changed. Wonder replaced tension. “Whoa.

Evelyn smiled for real. Then a phone rang inside the house. Margaret answered. A moment later, she stepped onto the porch. Her expression was serious.

“It’s Detective Cole. Evelyn took the phone. “Hello? Cole did not waste time. “Victor left his house forty minutes ago. “So? “He dismissed his driver and disabled the tracking on his company vehicle.

Liam heard enough from Evelyn’s face. Cole continued. “We found something else in Daniel’s files. A reference to a storage property Victor owns under another company.”

Evelyn’s grip tightened. “What property? “An old coastal warehouse. “Why does it matter? “Because Daniel wrote one sentence beside the address. Cole paused. “If he ever knows I copied the drive, he’ll burn everything here.

Evelyn looked toward the darkening horizon. “Is Victor going there? “We think so. Far away, beyond the city lights, Victor Hale’s car turned onto the coastal highway.

In the trunk sat two cans of gasoline. On the passenger seat lay Daniel’s stolen envelope.
