Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Viper

The room dissolved into immediate, screaming chaos as Vivienne lunged forward, knife raised.
Her manicured hand was trembling with psychotic fury, her aim directed straight toward the frail child wrapped in Nora’s arms.
"If I'm going to hell, you're coming with me, you little brat!" Vivienne shrieked, completely detached from reality.
Nora didn't hesitate for a single microsecond.
She twisted her entire body around, draping her back and shoulders over Lily, turning herself into a human shield for her daughter.
She braced for the cold steel to sink deep into her flesh, her arms locking tight around her two children.
The blow never landed.
Liam moved with the terrifying speed of a seasoned street fighter who had spent his youth protecting his family from wolves.
He stepped inside Vivienne’s reach, his left hand snapping out like an iron vise around the billionaire's slender wrist.
With a sharp, brutal twist of his massive forearm, Liam snapped her wrist backward at an unnatural angle.
The bone popped with a sickening crunch that made nearby guests wince in phantom pain.
Vivienne released an ear-piercing scream of agony as the silver stiletto clattered harmlessly against the marble tiles.
Liam didn't release his grip; he yanked her forward, using her momentum to slam her face-first into the cold stone floor.
He dropped his heavy knee onto the small of her back, pinning the screaming, thrashing woman completely motionless.
"Touch my family again," Liam whispered into her ear, his voice freezing the blood in her veins, "and I won't wait for the law."
The grand double doors were thrown open with a thunderous crash as six heavily armed state troopers burst into the ballroom.
Their tactical shotguns were raised, sweeping the room until their eyes landed on the sprawling wreckage, the blood, and the pinned billionaire.
"Nobody move!" the lead sergeant barked, his finger hovering over the trigger guard. "State Police! Down on the floor!"
"She's the one you want, officer," Harrison Vance said, stepping forward with his hands raised calmly in the air.
"I am Harrison Vance, legal counsel for the Ashcroft estate. Vivienne Ashcroft has just confessed to the premeditated murder of Arthur Ashcroft."
"And behind that broken wall," Vance added, pointing a trembling hand toward the dark cavity, "is the missing Bennett child she abducted."
The troopers lowered their weapons, their eyes widening in shock as they processed the surreal, horrifying scene.
Two officers immediately rushed forward, pulling Liam back gently before securing heavy steel handcuffs around Vivienne’s unbroken wrist.
They yanked her to her feet with zero ceremony, treating the former high-society queen like a violent street felon.
"Let go of me!" Vivienne spat, thrashing against their grip as blood and mascara ran down her ruined face. "Do you know who I am?"
"I own this county! I fund your entire department! You will rot in a cell for this!"
"Watch her head," the sergeant muttered coldly to his deputy, ignoring her completely as they dragged her toward the entrance.
As Vivienne was hauled past the crowd, the elite guests who had kissed her rings an hour ago actively shrank away in disgust.
Phones flashed continuously, capturing every angle of her bruised, disheveled disgrace for the global morning news.
The empire of Vivienne Ashcroft had officially collapsed into dust.
Yet as the front doors slammed shut behind the arresting officers, Lily began to shake uncontrollably in Nora’s lap.
Nora rocked her daughter gently, kissing the top of her head while fighting through her own waves of mounting abdominal pain.
"It's over, baby," Nora whispered through her tears. "The bad lady is gone. You're safe now."
Lily slowly lifted her head from Nora’s shoulder, her large, sunken brown eyes darting anxiously toward the open terrace doors.
"Mommy," Lily rasped, her small chest fluttering like a trapped bird.
"What is it, sweetheart?" Nora asked, brushing a strand of matted hair from the girl's forehead.
Lily leaned in close, her cracked lips brushing against Nora’s ear, dropping her voice to a terrified whisper.
"There was another man in the room," Lily said, her words sending an icy spike of dread straight into Nora’s heart.
"A man with a gold watch and a blue suit. He helped her hold the old man’s legs down."
Nora’s breath caught in her throat as she slowly lifted her head, scanning the remnants of the remaining crowd.
Near the open French doors leading out to the dark rose gardens, a tall figure in a tailored navy suit was quietly slipping into the shadows.
It was Marcus Sterling.
