Chapter 7 - The Shadows in the Ward

The metallic scent of lightning drifted through the cracked hospital window as thunder rumbled overhead.

Nora pressed herself back against the thin hospital mattress, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

"Who's there?" Nora demanded, her voice shaking despite her desperate attempt to sound strong.

The figure paused beside the IV pole, the faint silhouette of his broad shoulders blocking the hallway's emergency exit light.

"You really should have taken the money and left the county, Nora," a low, cultured voice murmured from the shadows.

Marcus Sterling stepped into the faint silver glow of the window, pulling off his surgical mask with a cold, detached smile.

The District Attorney looked perfectly composed, his polished demeanor completely contrasting with the lethal syringe in his hand.

"Arthur was an old fool who wanted to ruin everything we built," Sterling said softly, adjusting the needle’s protective cap.

"Vivienne was sloppy. She let her temper get the better of her with your daughter."

"She should have put the girl in the ground on day one," Sterling continued, his tone as casual as discussing the afternoon weather.

"Now she's singing like a canary to the State Troopers to save herself from the lethal injection chamber."

"And your precious little brat saw my face in that bedroom."

Nora felt a wave of icy terror flood her veins, but beneath the fear, a primal, motherly fury ignited.

"You touch my children, and I will tear your throat out with my teeth," Nora hissed, her fingers quietly searching the bedside table.

Sterling chuckled, a dry, humorless sound that echoed off the tiled walls.

"You won't feel a thing, Mrs. Bennett," Sterling whispered, stepping toward the edge of her bed.

"A massive dose of potassium chloride will mimic a fatal amniotic fluid embolism. Pre-term delivery complications. Tragic, but perfectly natural."

"And once you're gone, an unfortunate respiratory failure will claim your little girl down in room three."

"The case against me dies with you two."

Sterling raised the syringe, lunging toward Nora’s IV line with clinical precision.

Nora didn't scream; she acted.

Her right hand closed around the heavy stainless-steel bedpan resting on the bedside rolling tray.

With all the strength remaining in her battered body, Nora whipped the metal pan upward into Sterling’s face.

The hard steel edge smashed into his aristocratic nose with a wet, crunching impact.

Sterling roared in pain and shock, stumbling backward as blood gushed from his shattered nostrils.

The syringe slipped from his gloved fingers, shattering against the linoleum floor and spilling its deadly contents into the dark.

"You miserable bitch!" Sterling snarled, wiping a sleeve across his bloody mouth as his eyes burned with homicidal rage.

He dropped his civilized facade entirely, lunging across the mattress with two hands outstretched to strangle her bare-handed.

Before his fingers could touch Nora’s throat, the heavy wooden door of the room was blown clean off its hinges.

The door struck Sterling from behind, sending the corrupt politician flying across the room into a metal instrument cabinet.

Glass medicine vials shattered in a chaotic shower as Liam Bennett strode into the room like a charging locomotive.

Liam was holding a heavy iron pipe wrench he had ripped from an emergency fire station in the hallway.

"I told you I'd kill you if you touched them," Liam said, his voice dropping into an octave of pure, unadulterated death.

Sterling scrambled frantically through the broken glass on the floor, reaching inside his scrub jacket for a concealed snub-nosed revolver.

"Die, you blue-collar scum!" Sterling screamed, bringing the gun barrel up.

Liam didn't flinch.

He swung the heavy iron wrench with terrifying, pinpoint accuracy, striking Sterling’s right forearm before the trigger could be pulled.

The bone fractured instantly with a loud crack, the revolver spinning across the floor and sliding under Nora’s bed.

Sterling shrieked, clutching his ruined arm as Liam closed the distance and seized him by the throat with one massive hand.

Liam lifted the grown man completely off the floor, pinning him against the wall until Sterling’s designer-clad legs kicked helplessly in the air.

"Liam, don't!" Nora gasped from the bed, clutching her stomach as another contraction seized her. "Don't become a killer for him!"

Liam’s chest heaved, his knuckles white as he stared into the bulging, terrified eyes of the man who had ordered his family's destruction.

For three long seconds, the room hung on the edge of a violent execution.

Then Liam lowered him slightly and drove a devastating right cross directly into Sterling’s shattered nose, knocking the District Attorney out cold.

Sterling crumpled onto the floor like a sack of wet laundry, completely motionless.

Down the hallway, the emergency backup generators finally roared to life with a mechanical groan, flooding the room with bright fluorescent light.

Two armed state troopers and Dr. Chen burst into the doorway, their guns drawn before taking in the scene.

"Secure the DA," Liam said coldly, tossing the bloody pipe wrench onto the bedside table. "He just confessed to everything."

Dr. Chen rushed straight to Nora’s bedside, her eyes wide as she checked the fetal monitor that was rebooting on the wall.

"Nora, we have an emergency," Dr. Chen said, her voice trembling slightly as she checked the monitor’s green spikes.
