Chapter 6 - THE TRUTH REVEALED

The city blurred past the windows as Martha navigated the backstreets.
She drove aggressively, checking her mirrors every three seconds.
Jack held Lily close, gently stroking her hair until her sobs quieted.
"Care to explain why a hotel maid is holding a military-grade sidearm?" Jack asked.
Martha didn't look back. Her eyes remained glued to the rearview mirror.
"I'm not a maid. I'm her shadow. Her primary protector."
Jack frowned. "Protector from who? Who was that guy?"
"The Syndicate," Martha replied, the name hanging heavy in the tense air.
"Her father discovered something he shouldn't have. He hid the data in her pendant."
Jack looked down at the silver locket resting on Lily's chest.
"They don't want the girl. They want the key," Martha explained grimly.
"And who are you?" Martha asked, finally glancing at Jack in the mirror.

"Just a guy who hates seeing bullies," Jack replied, wiping blood from his lip.
Martha smirked. "Well, 'just a guy,' you're in it now."
