Chapter 4 - THE CROPPED VIDEO

At seven the next morning, Domenico carried coffee into the kitchen and found Miriam waiting in the clothes she had worn the night before. The envelope lay beside her untouched breakfast.
“I signed those renewals,” she said. “I was frightened to admit it because everyone trusted me.” Domenico set down his cup. “Trust won't come back through another secret.”
Maya arrived with a records specialist and a clear sequence of steps. The police had requested a certified copy of the garden footage; the board would receive a protected viewing with Eli's face obscured.
No recording of a child in distress would be sent around as a family defense. Maya arranged for an outside investigator to review the original files and access logs in a controlled room.
Domenico had hoped the proof would make the meeting simple. The lawyer reminded him that a board could still make a poor decision even when the facts were available.
Across town, Conrad left a message on Miriam's phone from the number his attorney permitted him to use. He spoke softly about Helena, about the boy she had made them promise to protect.
Then his voice sharpened. “If you betray me, those signatures become yours alone.” Miriam played the message for Maya instead of answering, and watched the lawyer add it to her notes.
The foundation occupied two floors above a neighborhood clinic. Sofia had chosen that location so applicants could walk in from the bus stop without passing a guarded mansion gate.
Now two board members waited near the elevators, troubled by the leaked clip. One offered Domenico an awkward greeting; the other stared at his shoes until the doors opened.
Inside the meeting room, Conrad's attorney presented a statement describing an executive attacked by an unstable relative. He asked that Domenico step down while the matter was examined.
Domenico spoke only after the chair acknowledged him. “I kicked Conrad when he raised a metal bar over my four-year-old son,” he said. “You'll see the original recording privately.”
Maya explained the redactions protecting Eli, the preserved log, and Tomás's account. An investigator played the uninterrupted attack from the separate security backup, which had retained the missing interval.
On the screen, Conrad positioned the cream ball near the flowerbed. He looked toward the lens, switched the camera to record, and waited for Eli to return from the house.
The boy appeared with mud on his shoes and pleasure on his face. Conrad stepped in front of him, lifted the bar, and kept advancing even after Eli dropped behind the chair.
No one in the room spoke while the chair splintered. The board had seen Domenico's kick in the leaked clip; now they saw the child he had pulled out of reach.
The investigator stopped playback before Eli's face could appear clearly. Maya showed the matching log entry for Miriam's tablet and the documented location of Adrián's red ball.
Conrad's attorney said his client disputed both intent and sequence. Maya nodded. “He can present that position to investigators. The board has enough to take protective action today.”
The board suspended Conrad from foundation duties pending the independent audit. Domenico recused himself from decisions concerning the incident and agreed that a temporary committee would oversee spending.
Miriam raised her hand. “I cannot chair it.” She placed the old loan agreement and Conrad's message before the board and explained that her signatures required examination as well.
A silence followed that felt entirely different from the one in the garden. Then the treasurer proposed an outside interim administrator and emergency payments for North Gate families whose assistance had stalled.
The motion passed. Nothing about it healed Eli's fear, but the next month's rent would not wait for the family to solve its own shame.
Afterward Miriam stood alone by Sofia's photograph in the hallway. In it Sofia was kneeling beside a repaired front door, holding a paintbrush while a little girl chose its color.
“She would have known what to do,” Miriam said when Domenico stopped nearby. “She would have asked who missed the payment before asking whose reputation it damaged.”
Domenico did not give his mother the comfort of an easy forgiveness. “Then start there,” he replied. They walked downstairs separately beneath the hum of the clinic vents.
At home, Eli wanted to know whether there had been angry people at the office. Domenico told him adults were making sure Conrad could no longer decide what happened in their house.
“You can ask me more tomorrow,” he added. “You don't have to understand everything today.” Eli pulled a blanket around them both and asked instead for Sofia's story about the stubborn little boat.
That night a North Gate mother called Lucía. Her landlord had posted a notice despite assurances from the foundation. Lucía relayed the address to the temporary administrator, who authorized help before closing time.

When the payment cleared, the woman sent a photograph of her children sleeping in their own beds. Lucía forwarded it to Domenico with no caption. He showed it to Miriam.
The photograph contained no evidence against Conrad. It showed the cost of waiting, and the reason the investigation had to continue after the meeting's dramatic moment passed.
