Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN AT THE CLINIC

The first person to challenge Domenico about North Gate was a woman in a clinic hallway. She recognized his name from the foundation's letters and held up three unpaid motel receipts.
“My daughter counts the days by when we have to move,” she said. Her name was Elena Ruiz, and floodwater had damaged the walls of her rented home six weeks earlier.
Domenico listened as she explained the promised grant and the calls that went unanswered. He gave her Maya's direct contact, then stayed while the temporary administrator confirmed that same-day lodging was available.
Elena did not thank him. She asked why the foundation had marked her family as paid. He told her an independent audit was underway and that she would receive the finding relevant to her case.
In the parking lot, her daughter held a purple backpack against her chest. The sight brought Eli's grip on the ball back so sharply that Domenico had to pause before opening his car.
At the mansion, Dr. Salvatierra met Eli and explained that frightening memories sometimes returned when a person saw a similar place or sound. She did not demand that he replay the garden for her.
They practiced a simple signal: if Eli needed a break, he could hold up his hand. Domenico promised to stop whatever he was doing when he saw it, even if adults were talking.
Eli tested the promise at lunch. Miriam entered carrying soup, and his hand rose before she reached the table. She set the bowl down and stepped back without protesting.
“I'll leave it here,” she said. “You can ask me to bring something later.” Eli waited until she was gone, then pushed the bowl toward Domenico to check its warmth.
Miriam cried afterward, out of Eli's sight. Grief for her own mistake did not entitle her to a quick reunion. She wrote a short apology and asked the doctor whether giving it to him would help.
“Let his father decide when,” Dr. Salvatierra said. “And don't ask Eli to make you feel better for writing it.” Miriam folded the note and put it away.
Meanwhile, Lucía and the auditor mapped the false approvals. Each suspicious grant had passed through an operations account controlled by Conrad and one secondary signer, foundation comptroller Rafael Baeza.
Rafael claimed he had approved vendor changes because Conrad supplied repair invoices. The invoices described buildings that had never been damaged, including Elena Ruiz's street on a day the floodwater never reached it.
Maya advised the foundation to notify the police and freeze the relevant vendor accounts through lawful channels. An internal spreadsheet alone would not recover what families had already lost.
The auditor then found a set of draft notices in a shared folder. They were prepared before the garden incident and named Domenico as a violent, compromised leader who had ignored missing grants.
Some words reflected a real failure: Domenico had delegated too much and missed clear warning signs. Their timing revealed how Conrad intended to use that failure to secure control.
Domenico read the draft twice. He had expected accusations, but the detail that stung was Sofia's name. Conrad invoked her mission while starving the program she had built.
In a second draft, Rafael was to replace Lucía as grant reviewer. The document listed Tomás's pension among operational expenses to be “reassessed,” a neat word for a deliberate threat.
Lucía stared at that line. “He knew exactly which part of my life he could squeeze.” Maya told her the threat was documented and arranged independent employment protection during the audit.
Late in the afternoon, a call came from Adrián's mother, Isabel. She and Conrad had lived separately for a year, and Adrián stayed with her most weekdays.
Isabel had seen the leaked clip online. She wanted the boys kept apart until the situation was safe, but asked if Eli understood that Adrián had nothing to do with the bar.
Domenico answered honestly: Eli was worried about him. Isabel said Adrián was worried too; his father had told him not to mention the red ball in the shed.
No adult asked Adrián for a statement over the phone. Isabel arranged to speak with investigators and a child specialist so her son's words would not be shaped by competing relatives.
After dinner, Domenico told Eli that Adrián was safe with his mother. Eli built a second bridge from his blocks and left a car on one side for his cousin.
A police detective called as Domenico put the toys away. Investigators had obtained a warrant for Conrad's office and recovered a password-protected drive beneath the bottom drawer.

The drive carried North Gate payment files and a folder titled PRIVATE. Its contents were encrypted. Conrad's attorney had already described it as personal family material unrelated to the audit.
Domenico looked at the sleeping child, then toward Sofia's photograph. Even if the folder held another ugly truth, he wanted it handled through the investigation and kept away from Eli's door.
