Chapter 2 - THE VIDEOS NOBODY WAS SUPPOSED TO SEE

Ryan did not leave the backyard.

That was the first thing Melissa understood.

He stood near the broken flowerpots with Chloe’s phone in one hand and Emma pressed close to his side. The side gate remained open behind him, but he made no move toward it.

Chloe reached for the phone again.

Ryan lifted it out of reach.

“Unlock it.”

“No.”

“It’s already unlocked.”

Chloe’s face tightened.

The recording app was still open. Ryan stopped the video and watched the thumbnail appear.

Emma looked tiny on the screen.

Melissa moved toward him.

“Give Chloe her property.”

Ryan’s thumb hovered over the gallery icon.

“After I see what she recorded.”

“You do not have permission.”

Ryan gave her a look that made her stop.

“You were throwing garbage at a seven-year-old.”

“It was leaves.”

“There were wrappers in her hair.”

“Oh, please.”

Emma flinched at Melissa’s tone.

Ryan felt it.

He turned his body so Emma was completely behind him.

“Go inside,” he said softly.

Emma’s grip tightened.

“No.”

He glanced down.

She shook her head quickly.

“If I go alone, she’ll come after me.”

The sentence was quiet.

It changed the air more than any shout could have.

Ryan stared at his sister.

Melissa spoke too fast.

“She is being dramatic.”

Ryan’s eyes lifted slowly toward her.

“Emma,” he said, “has she come after you before?”

Emma did not answer.

She did not need to.

Her silence was an answer Ryan knew too well.

He had spent most of the last year believing the distance between Emma and Melissa came from the normal mess of a blended family. He had told himself that Mark was doing his best.

Now he remembered every call with Emma that ended suddenly when Melissa entered the room.

He remembered the birthday video where Emma had smiled but barely spoken.

He remembered asking why she no longer played in the backyard.

He remembered Chloe joking once that Emma was “the house mouse.”

At the time, Ryan had rolled his eyes.

Now the phrase came back like a warning he had ignored.

He opened the gallery.

Chloe lunged.

Ryan stepped sideways.

“Stop!”

“Give it back!”

“Why?”

“Because it’s mine!”

“Then tell me what’s on it.”

Chloe looked at her mother.

That look told Ryan where to search.

He opened a folder marked PRIVATE.

Melissa’s expression sharpened.

“Ryan.”

He tapped it.

The first video thumbnail showed Emma at the kitchen sink.

The second showed her standing beside a laundry basket.

The third showed her outside on the porch in rain boots.

The fourth showed Chloe smiling into the camera while Emma stood behind her holding grocery bags.

Ryan stopped breathing for a moment.

There were twenty-three clips.

Some were short.

Some were more than five minutes long.

All were dated within the last four months.

Emma saw the thumbnails and whispered, “I didn’t know she kept them.”

Ryan crouched beside her.

“You’ve seen her record before?”

“Sometimes.”

Melissa folded her arms.

“This is ridiculous. Teenagers make stupid videos.”

Ryan opened one.

Chloe’s voice played from the phone speaker.

“Welcome back to another episode of Princess versus Peasant.”

The camera swung toward Emma carrying two laundry baskets.

Emma on the screen looked embarrassed and confused.

Melissa’s voice came from somewhere off camera.

“Don’t drop those, Cinderella.”

Chloe laughed.

The video ended.

Ryan stared at the black screen.

He opened another.

This one showed Emma sitting alone at the dining table while Chloe ate pizza from a cardboard box.

The camera zoomed in on Emma’s empty plate.

Chloe whispered dramatically, “Somebody forgot her attitude tax.”

Melissa laughed from behind the camera.

Ryan closed the clip.

His hand was shaking.

He hated that.

He wanted to be the calm person Emma needed.

He forced himself to inhale slowly.

“Did Dad know?”

Emma looked at the ground.

“No.”

“Did you tell him?”

“Once.”

Ryan swallowed.

“What happened?”

“He said Melissa was trying to help us adjust.”

Ryan closed his eyes.

He knew those words.

Mark had said them to him too.

Not about abuse. Not about videos. About rules, chores, curfews, and the tension of remarriage.

Ryan had accepted the explanation because he was away at school and wanted to believe his father had finally found stability after years of grief.

He had wanted peace badly enough to mistake silence for peace.

Melissa stepped closer.

“You are twisting everything.”

Ryan stood.

“No. I’m watching it.”

“Out of context.”

“What context makes this normal?”

“You don’t live here.”

“Emma does.”

“And she is fed, clothed, and taken care of.”

Ryan’s face hardened.

“That is the lowest possible bar.”

Chloe looked increasingly frightened.

“Mom, maybe we should just—”

“Be quiet.”

The command snapped across the yard.

Chloe immediately obeyed.

Ryan noticed.

For the first time, he looked at Chloe not only as the person who had been tormenting Emma, but also as a fourteen-year-old who had learned exactly how to respond to her mother’s tone.

That did not erase what she had done.

But it made the picture more complicated.

Ryan slipped the phone into his hoodie pocket.

Chloe’s eyes widened.

“You can’t take it!”

“I’m making copies.”

Melissa stepped forward.

“You are not taking that phone into this house.”

Ryan picked up his duffel bag with one hand.

“Then call Dad.”

“I will.”

“Good.”

Melissa pulled her own phone from her cardigan pocket.

Ryan watched her.

She did not call Mark.

Instead, she typed quickly.

“Who are you texting?”

“My husband.”

Ryan held out his hand.

“Put him on speaker.”

Melissa laughed.

“You don’t order me around.”

Ryan reached into his pocket, took out his own phone, and called Mark.

It rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Voicemail.

Ryan looked at the time.

Mark should have been leaving work within twenty minutes.

He sent a text.

CALL ME NOW. IT’S ABOUT EMMA. COME HOME.

Then he took Emma’s hand.

“We’re going inside.”

Melissa blocked the back door.

“No.”

Ryan stopped.

“Move.”

“You shoved me.”

“You slapped me and came at me again.”

“I can call the police.”

Ryan’s eyes did not leave hers.

“Then call them.”

Melissa hesitated.

That hesitation told him more than he expected.

She did not want police in the house.

Not yet.

Ryan changed direction.

He led Emma toward the side gate.

Melissa looked alarmed.

“Where are you going?”

“Somewhere she feels safe.”

“You cannot take her.”

“I’m her brother.”

“You are not her guardian.”

“I’m not kidnapping her. I’m taking her next door while we wait for Dad.”

The next-door neighbor, Mrs. Alvarez, had known the Carter family since before Mark remarried. She was sixty-two, blunt, observant, and nearly impossible to intimidate.

Emma loved her.

Melissa did not.

Ryan could see that fact register immediately.

“Emma stays here,” Melissa said.

Emma moved behind Ryan again.

“No.”

Everyone froze.

Emma almost never raised her voice.

Her small hand trembled inside Ryan’s.

“I don’t want to stay here.”

Melissa’s eyes narrowed.

“Emma.”

Ryan stepped between them.

“She answered.”

He walked her through the gate.

Chloe called after him.

“Ryan!”

He stopped.

She stood beside the torn bag, pale and unsure.

“What?”

Chloe looked at Melissa, then at Ryan.

“There’s another folder.”

Melissa turned toward her.

“Chloe.”

Chloe flinched.

Ryan’s heartbeat changed.

“What folder?”

Chloe stared at the ground.

“I deleted it.”

Ryan waited.

“But deleted videos stay in Recently Deleted for thirty days.”

Melissa’s face went still.

“Chloe, go inside.”

Chloe did not move.

Ryan took the phone back out.

“What’s in it?”

Chloe’s eyes filled with tears.

For once, none of the arrogance remained.

“Stuff Mom told me not to keep.”

Melissa crossed the patio fast.

Ryan backed through the gate with Emma.

Chloe shouted over her shoulder.

“The password is Emma’s birthday!”

Melissa grabbed Chloe’s arm.

Ryan’s face changed.

“Let go of her.”

Melissa released her.

The side gate swung wider in the wind.

Ryan entered the password.

The folder opened.

There were nine recently deleted videos.

He tapped the newest one.

The image was dark and shaky.

The camera appeared to be inside Chloe’s pocket.

Melissa’s voice came through clearly.

“If she tells Mark again, you say she made it up for attention.”

Ryan stopped walking.

Emma looked up at him.

On the recording, Chloe asked, “What if he believes her?”

Melissa answered without hesitation.

“He won’t.”

Ryan looked back through the open gate.

Melissa stood in the middle of the ruined patio, surrounded by leaves, broken pots, and spilled soil.

For the first time since he had arrived, she looked afraid.

Ryan turned the phone screen off.

Then his own phone rang.

DAD flashed across the display.

Ryan answered.

Mark’s voice came through, worried and breathless.

“Ryan? What happened?”

Ryan looked down at Emma.

Then he looked back at the house.

“Dad,” he said, “you need to come home right now.”

A pause.

“How bad is it?”

May you like

Ryan’s jaw tightened.

“Worse than you think.”
