Chapter 4 - THE HIDDEN AUDIENCE

Morning came gray and cold.

No one in Mrs. Alvarez’s house slept much.

Emma finally drifted off on the living-room sofa near two in the morning, wrapped in a quilt that smelled like lavender. Ryan slept in a chair beside her until his neck cramped badly enough to wake him.

Mark never slept at all.

At six-thirty, he was still at the kitchen table watching the videos with the sound off.

He had made notes.

Dates.

Times.

Locations.

Moments he now remembered being at work, grocery shopping, or on late shifts.

Each date was a map of his absence.

At seven, Chloe came downstairs.

Mrs. Alvarez had given her the guest room.

She stood in the doorway wearing one of Mrs. Alvarez’s oversized sweatshirts.

“Is Emma awake?”

Ryan shook his head.

Chloe nodded.

She started back upstairs.

“Wait.”

She stopped.

Ryan held up the phone.

“What’s Moms After Dark?”

Color left Chloe’s face.

Mark looked at her.

She sat slowly.

“My mom’s group.”

“What kind of group?” Mark asked.

“Private. Invite only.”

“Who’s in it?”

“I don’t know. Moms, mostly.”

“How many?”

Chloe swallowed.

“Like… maybe eight thousand?”

Mark’s chair scraped backward.

Ryan felt sick.

“Eight thousand people?”

“I don’t know if all of them saw her videos.”

“That is not the point.”

Chloe flinched.

Ryan softened his voice slightly.

“Start from the beginning.”

Chloe stared at her hands.

Melissa had joined the group a year earlier. At first, she posted harmless complaints about blended-family life.

Homework battles.

Messy bedrooms.

Arguments over screen time.

The posts got attention.

Then she noticed that dramatic posts got more comments.

She began exaggerating.

Emma became “the spoiled stepdaughter.”

Ryan became “the disrespectful college kid.”

Mark became “the clueless husband who never notices anything.”

Chloe became the funny narrator.

The group loved her.

“They started asking for videos,” Chloe whispered.

Mark looked horrified.

“What videos?”

“Proof that Emma was difficult.”

Ryan laughed once in disbelief.

“So your mother created the problem and filmed the punishment.”

Chloe’s eyes filled.

“At first it wasn’t like that.”

“When did it become like that?”

Chloe wiped her face.

“When people started commenting.”

Emma stirred on the sofa.

Everyone went quiet.

She sat up slowly.

Ryan went to her.

“Morning.”

She looked at Chloe.

Chloe’s eyes dropped.

Emma leaned closer to Ryan.

“What are you talking about?”

Ryan did not lie.

“The videos.”

Emma stared.

“Did people see them?”

Ryan hated the question.

He looked at Mark.

Mark came over and crouched beside her.

“We think some people might have.”

Emma’s face collapsed.

“No.”

Mark held up both hands.

“Listen to me. You did nothing wrong.”

“They’ll think I’m stupid.”

“No.”

“They’ll laugh.”

Mark’s voice broke.

“They should be ashamed, not you.”

Emma stood abruptly.

“I want them gone.”

Ryan nodded.

“We’re going to work on that.”

By eight-thirty, Mark had contacted a family attorney recommended by Mrs. Alvarez. He also called the local child protective services hotline and asked how to preserve evidence before requesting takedowns.

The advice was simple.

Document first.

Then report.

Ryan photographed the phone screen, copied links, saved account names, and recorded dates.

Chloe gave them Melissa’s username.

The private group itself was difficult to access because Melissa’s account required verification.

Then Chloe remembered the family tablet.

It was still inside the Carter house.

Mark and Ryan exchanged a look.

“I’ll get it,” Mark said.

Ryan shook his head.

“Not alone.”

Melissa had left before dawn.

Her car was gone.

Still, neither trusted the silence.

Mrs. Alvarez stayed with Emma and Chloe.

Mark and Ryan crossed the yard together.

The broken flowerpots were still on the patio.

The black leaf bag had blown against the fence.

Mark stopped when he saw it.

Ryan watched his father’s face.

“This happened here,” Mark said quietly.

“Yes.”

“And I came home every night to this yard.”

Ryan did not answer.

They entered through the back door.

The house smelled like cold coffee.

Melissa had taken two suitcases.

Her makeup was gone.

So were several framed photographs from the bedroom.

Mark found the tablet in the kitchen drawer.

It unlocked with his fingerprint.

Melissa’s account was still signed in.

The private group loaded.

Ryan wished it had not.

There were dozens of posts.

Not all about Emma.

Some were ordinary family complaints.

But the most popular posts had titles like LITTLE MISS ENTITLED LEARNS A LESSON and WHEN YOUR STEPDAUGHTER THINKS SHE’S THE QUEEN.

The backyard clip had been uploaded as a draft but had not yet gone live.

The laundry video had.

So had the dining table video.

Comments filled the screen.

Some users laughed.

Some praised Melissa for “tough love.”

Some criticized her.

A few asked whether Emma was okay.

Ryan’s stomach twisted.

Mark stared without blinking.

Then he saw the number beneath one video.

Mark sat down.

Ryan scrolled no farther.

“Dad.”

Mark looked at him.

“I let strangers watch my daughter be humiliated.”

“You didn’t post it.”

“I didn’t stop it.”

“You didn’t know.”

Mark looked toward the window.

“That sentence doesn’t help anymore.”

Ryan sat across from him.

“No. But what you do next matters.”

Mark looked back at him.

That was the first time Ryan understood his father was not only grieving what had happened to Emma.

He was grieving the version of himself who had believed everything was fine.

A car pulled into the driveway.

Both men stood.

It was not Melissa.

A county child-welfare vehicle stopped outside.

A woman in a navy coat stepped out.

Mark’s shoulders straightened.

“You called them?”

“Last night.”

Ryan nodded slowly.

“Good.”

The caseworker introduced herself as Denise Walker.

She was calm, direct, and careful with Emma.

She interviewed everyone separately.

Emma spoke with Mrs. Alvarez nearby.

Ryan gave his account.

Mark admitted exactly what he had missed.

Chloe cried through most of hers.

Then Denise asked to speak with Chloe alone.

Forty minutes later, Chloe came out looking pale.

She walked toward Ryan.

“There’s something else.”

Ryan’s stomach dropped.

“What?”

Chloe looked at Emma, then back at him.

“I told her Mom made me delete messages.”

“What messages?”

“Instructions.”

Ryan waited.

Chloe took a breath.

“She would text me what to do before some of the videos.”

Mark heard.

His face tightened.

“Do you still have them?”

“No. She made me delete them.”

Denise stepped into the hallway.

“Deleted messages may still be recoverable depending on the service.”

Chloe shook her head.

“That’s not what I mean.”

Everyone looked at her.

“I took screenshots.”

Melissa had taught Chloe to hide evidence from Mark.

Without realizing it, she had also taught Chloe how to hide evidence from Melissa.

Chloe had saved the screenshots in an old gaming account’s private storage.

Ryan opened them.

The first message read:

MAKE HER HOLD THE BASKET. FILM WHEN SHE STARTS CRYING.

The second:

DON’T SHOW MY FACE.

The third:

IF SHE TELLS MARK, SAY SHE’S JEALOUS OF YOU.

Emma stood very still.

Then she looked at Chloe.

“Why did you do it?”

Nobody breathed.

Chloe covered her face.

“Because when Mom laughed, I felt like she loved me more.”

Emma’s expression changed.

The answer did not erase anything.

But it made the cruelty look different.

Smaller.

Sadder.

More human.

Denise closed her notebook.

“We have enough to put a safety plan in place today.”

Mark nodded.

“What does that mean?”

“It means Emma does not have unsupervised contact with Melissa while we investigate.”

A car door slammed outside.

Ryan turned toward the window.

Melissa’s sedan had pulled into the driveway.

She stepped out wearing sunglasses.

A man in a gray suit exited the passenger side.

Mark stared.

Ryan’s jaw tightened.

Melissa removed her sunglasses and looked directly at the house.

The man beside her carried a leather briefcase.

Chloe whispered, “That’s her lawyer.”

Melissa walked toward the front door.

Denise moved calmly into the hallway.

Mark stood beside Emma.

Ryan stepped to his other side.

For the first time, the Carter family did not scatter when Melissa approached.

They formed a line.
