Chapter 5 - THE HOUSE IN THE WOODS

============================================================

The property sat beyond the edge of a small mountain town, where paved roads narrowed into gravel and the October trees leaned over the route like dark walls. Police vehicles gathered two miles away so Caleb would not hear them approach.

Daniel was not allowed to go.

He understood why, but understanding did not make waiting easier.

He remained at Memorial Hospital with Emma, Lily, Claire, and Rachel.

Rachel Grant looked fragile in the hospital bed, but her eyes were fierce.

The moment Lily entered the room, Rachel tried to sit up despite the nurse’s warning.

“My baby.”

Lily ran to her.

Rachel held her daughter’s face, then touched the uneven hair beneath the knitted cap.

“What happened?”

Lily looked toward Daniel.

Rachel followed her gaze.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Vanessa cut it.”

Rachel’s expression changed.

“No.”

“She locked Lily in a room.”

Rachel closed her eyes.

A tear slid toward her temple.

“I trusted her.”

Lily hugged her carefully.

Rachel looked at Daniel again. “And Emma?”

Daniel glanced at his daughter.

“The same.”

Rachel’s face filled with horror.

“I’m sorry.”

Daniel shook his head. “You don’t owe me that.”

Rachel did.

Not because she believed she had caused it.

Because she understood the helplessness.

For the next hour, detectives interviewed Rachel between medical checks.

She confirmed that Caleb had forced her into the truck.

He told her Evan was alive.

He showed her a short video of the boy sitting in a room she did not recognize.

Then he demanded money.

Rachel had almost nothing left.

That was why she gave Vanessa twelve hundred dollars.

Not as payment.

As emergency money to get Lily to Claire.

Rachel said Vanessa had once helped her through a difficult divorce paperwork problem at the billing office. They were not close anymore, but Rachel remembered her as practical and reliable.

“What changed?” Daniel asked.

Rachel looked exhausted.

“I don’t know.”

Officer Blake answered later.

Money.

Debt.

Vanessa had accumulated nearly eighty thousand dollars in private loans Daniel did not know existed.

Online shopping.

Sports betting.

Cash advances.

A secret credit card.

Caleb discovered the debt through Vanessa’s brother, Mason, who had worked with him occasionally on construction jobs.

He offered Vanessa money to keep Lily hidden.

At first, she refused.

Then she accepted.

The arrangement escalated.

Vanessa would prevent Lily from contacting police.

Caleb would pay ten thousand dollars once Rachel signed custody papers giving him Evan.

The plan was crude, illegal, and desperate.

But desperate people often built terrible plans from the assumption that everyone else would remain afraid.

Emma had complicated that assumption.

She found Lily.

She fed her.

She promised to tell Daniel.

Vanessa used humiliation and fear to silence her.

Cutting her hair was not spontaneous.

It was a warning.

Daniel listened to Officer Blake explain this in the hospital hallway and felt sick.

“So Vanessa knew exactly what she was doing.”

“Yes.”

“Where is she now?”

“County detention. Her attorney has advised her to cooperate.”

“Is she?”

“Partially.”

Daniel laughed without humor. “Of course.”

Blake studied him.

“You cannot let your anger pull you away from Emma.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

He looked through the glass.

Emma sat beside Lily while both girls watched cartoons with the volume low.

Daniel exhaled.

“Yes.”

He meant it.

His job was no longer to understand Vanessa.

His job was to rebuild safety for his daughter.

At three forty in the afternoon, the tactical team reached Mason’s property.

Blake left the hospital to coordinate remotely.

No one in the waiting room knew what was happening for nearly forty minutes.

Those forty minutes stretched.

Rachel gripped Claire’s hand.

Lily sat pressed against her mother’s side.

Emma rested against Daniel.

He could feel her breathing and found himself matching it.

In.

Out.

In.

Out.

He thought about the bedroom.

About arriving exactly when he had.

For days he would ask himself what would have happened if a client meeting had not been canceled.

Then he would stop.

There was no answer that helped.

The hospital television showed a weather report.

Rain was moving north.

The same direction as the wooded property.

Then Claire’s phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

She answered on speaker at the detective’s instruction.

“Hello?”

A child was crying.

“Mom?”

Rachel sat upright.

“Evan?”

The call crackled.

“Mom, I’m scared.”

Rachel covered her mouth.

“I’m here, sweetheart. Where are you?”

A man’s voice interrupted.

“Rachel.”

Caleb.

Every person in the room became still.

Rachel’s face hardened.

“Where is my son?”

“You know what I want.”

“You already have the papers.”

“Not signed.”

Rachel looked toward the detective stationed outside.

He signaled to keep talking.

“Let Evan go.”

Caleb laughed softly. “You think you’re in charge now?”

Rachel’s voice shook, but it did not break.

“No. I think the police are.”

The call went silent.

Then Caleb cursed.

The line disconnected.

Daniel stood.

“What happened?”

The detective checked his phone.

“They traced the call.”

“To the property?”

He shook his head.

“No. Different location.”

Rachel’s face drained.

“Then the house is empty.”

The detective was already calling Blake.

Minutes later, confirmation came.

The wooded house contained evidence Caleb had been there.

Food wrappers.

A child’s blanket.

Rachel’s missing purse.

But no Evan.

No Caleb.

Mason was arrested at the property and immediately claimed Caleb had left hours earlier.

The phone call had come from a roadside area near the state line.

Caleb was moving.

Rachel began to panic.

Daniel stepped closer.

“He called because he’s losing control.”

She looked at him.

“That doesn’t make him less dangerous.”

“No.”

Daniel thought about Vanessa’s face when he found the second bundle of hair.

Fear had made her reckless.

Caleb might be the same.

That night, the hospital moved Rachel to a protected floor.

Lily stayed with her.

Claire stayed too.

Daniel and Emma were transferred to a secure family shelter used for witnesses in active cases.

Emma did not want to leave Lily.

“We’ll see her tomorrow,” Daniel promised.

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

In the car, Emma watched city lights move across the window.

“Dad?”

“Yeah?”

“Is Vanessa going to jail?”

Daniel chose his words carefully.

“She has been arrested. A court will decide what happens next.”

“Do you still love her?”

The question surprised him.

He looked at the road.

“I loved who I thought she was.”

Emma was quiet.

“That’s different?”

“Yes.”

She thought about it.

“Do you love me?”

Daniel nearly pulled over.

He reached across the console and took her hand.

“More than anything.”

Emma looked down at their joined hands.

“Even with my hair like this?”

His throat tightened.

“Your hair was beautiful.”

She waited.

“And you are still beautiful.”

A small smile appeared.

It vanished when his phone vibrated.

Officer Blake.

Daniel answered through the car system.

“We found Caleb’s truck.”

“Where?”

“Abandoned near the river.”

“Evan?”

“Not there.”

Daniel gripped the steering wheel.

Then Blake continued.

“But we found something else.”

“What?”

“A receipt in the truck.”

“For what?”

“A bus ticket.”

Daniel’s heart sank.

“Where to?”

Blake named the city.

Chicago.

Departure time: forty minutes earlier.

Daniel looked at the highway ahead.

Caleb was no longer hiding in the woods.

He was disappearing into a city of millions.

May you like

And he still had a six-year-old boy with him.
