Chapter 6 - THE BOY ON THE BUS

============================================================

The bus to Chicago carried forty-seven passengers, according to the station manifest. Caleb Rusk had purchased two tickets under false names with cash, but a security camera captured him boarding with Evan.

The image spread through law enforcement before sunrise.

Daniel saw it on Officer Blake’s phone.

Evan wore a red jacket and carried no backpack.

Caleb kept one hand on the boy’s shoulder.

Even in a blurred still frame, Daniel recognized the posture of control.

Emma sat beside him at the secure shelter breakfast table eating cereal. She noticed the photograph.

“That’s Lily’s brother?”

“Yes.”

“He looks scared.”

Daniel did not answer immediately.

“Yes.”

Emma looked down at her bowl.

“When I was scared, Lily talked to me through the door.”

Daniel studied her.

“What did she say?”

“She told me stories.”

“About what?”

“Places she wanted to go.”

Emma smiled faintly.

“She said Chicago has a big silver bean.”

Daniel nodded.

“Cloud Gate.”

“She called it the bean.”

He smiled.

Then Emma’s face became serious again.

“Maybe Evan knows she likes Chicago.”

The thought seemed small.

But it stayed with Daniel.

At ten in the morning, Blake called from Chicago.

The bus had arrived.

Caleb and Evan had not left through the main terminal exit.

Police found camera footage showing them entering a restroom corridor.

Only Evan came out.

Alone.

Daniel stood so fast his chair hit the wall.

“Where is he?”

“Safe.”

He closed his eyes.

“Thank God.”

Emma heard and ran toward him.

“They found him?”

“Yes.”

She threw both arms around him.

“What about Caleb?”

“Gone.”

Investigators believed Caleb changed clothes in the restroom and exited through an employee service door.

He had abandoned Evan.

Why?

No one knew yet.

Maybe the nationwide alert frightened him.

Maybe he believed the boy slowed him down.

Maybe he had another plan.

Evan was taken to a Chicago children’s hospital and reunited with Rachel by video call.

When Daniel saw Lily later that day, the relief in her face made her look like a different child.

“My brother’s okay.”

“I heard.”

“He asked if Mom could bring me to Chicago.”

“Sounds like he misses you.”

Lily smiled.

Then she hugged Emma.

For several hours, hope finally outweighed fear.

But Caleb remained missing.

Vanessa remained in jail.

And Daniel still had to return to the house.

Detectives needed him to identify personal property and help determine which areas Vanessa controlled exclusively.

He refused to take Emma.

She stayed with Marisol and the Grants.

Daniel entered the Mercer home with Officer Blake just after noon.

The smell hit him first.

Not anything unusual.

Laundry detergent.

Coffee.

The faint vanilla scent from a candle Vanessa liked.

Normal smells inside an abnormal place.

He stopped at the bottom of the stairs.

“I don’t want Emma coming back here.”

Blake nodded.

“That may be wise.”

“I’m selling it.”

“You don’t have to decide today.”

“I already did.”

He walked upstairs.

The bedroom had been processed.

Hair strands remained in places police had not collected.

Daniel stared at the wooden chair.

He imagined Emma sitting there.

Then he moved to the locked room.

The door stood open now.

Sunlight filled it.

In daylight, it looked smaller.

On the wall near the mattress were pencil marks.

Not words.

Vertical lines.

Daniel counted.

Twenty-seven.

“What are those?” he asked.

Blake stepped closer.

“Lily said she marked each hour she was awake.”

Daniel felt sick.

Three nights.

Twenty-seven waking hours measured on a wall.

He looked away.

In the master bedroom, investigators had already cataloged Vanessa’s belongings.

Blake opened a locked desk drawer using a key recovered from jail property.

Inside were loan documents, betting records, and a notebook.

Daniel recognized Vanessa’s handwriting.

Most pages were financial calculations.

But several contained names.

Rachel.

Lily.

Caleb.

Mason.

And Emma.

Daniel’s stomach tightened.

Next to Emma’s name were three phrases.

Talks too much.

Checks hallway.

Needs fear.

Daniel stared at the page.

The letters blurred.

Blake closed the notebook gently.

“You don’t need to keep reading.”

“Yes, I do.”

“Why?”

“Because I need to know what my daughter lived with.”

Blake looked at him carefully.

“Knowing everything may not help her.”

Daniel exhaled.

She was right.

He did not need every detail to believe Emma.

He needed to be present for what came next.

He left the room.

Downstairs, he noticed a framed wedding photograph on the mantel.

He and Vanessa were smiling beneath white lights.

Emma, six years old then, stood between them holding flowers.

Daniel removed the photograph.

He did not break it.

He placed it face down inside a box.

The marriage was over.

The person he had promised his future to had endangered his child.

There was nothing left to negotiate.

That afternoon, Daniel met a family-law attorney.

He filed for emergency divorce protections, full temporary custody, and a no-contact order preventing Vanessa from reaching Emma directly or indirectly.

The judge approved the emergency order that evening.

Daniel read the document twice.

Emma Mercer shall have no direct contact with Vanessa Mercer pending further hearing.

A line of legal language.

A wall stronger than a bedroom lock.

He showed Emma only the simple meaning.

“She can’t come near you.”

Emma’s shoulders lowered.

“Ever?”

“For now, the court says no. Later, we’ll keep making sure you’re safe.”

She nodded.

“Can I cut my hair how I want when it grows back?”

Daniel’s eyes stung.

“Yes.”

“Purple?”

“If school allows it.”

Emma smiled.

“Maybe just the ends.”

That night, she slept without asking to keep the light on.

At two seventeen in the morning, Daniel woke to his phone vibrating.

Officer Blake.

He answered quietly.

“Did you find Caleb?”

“No.”

“What happened?”

“We intercepted a message.”

“To who?”

“Vanessa.”

Daniel sat up.

“How can he message her in jail?”

“He sent it to her old email. We’re monitoring the account.”

“What did it say?”

Blake read it.

You ruined everything. I’m coming back for what you took.

Daniel’s body went cold.

“What does that mean?”

“We don’t know.”

“Rachel? Lily?”

“Possibly.”

Daniel looked toward the bedroom where Emma slept.

“Or Emma?”

Blake was silent.

That silence was enough.

Daniel stood.

“What do I need to do?”

“Wake Emma.”

His heart began pounding.

May you like

“We’re moving you again.”
