Chapter 4 - The Puppet Master's Contract

"Don't take another step," Daniel snarled, the barrel of the .38 steady on the center of her chest. His jaw was clenched so hard the muscles jumped beneath the skin. "You lied to me. You faked a pregnancy. You desecrated my home, my family, my son's birthday party—and now you're trespassing on corporate property. Give me one reason why I shouldn't empty this cylinder into you right now."
Vanessa didn't flinch. She stepped forward, her wet heels clicking on the cold concrete, stepping right into the radius of the flashlight. The rain had washed away her immaculate makeup, revealing dark, purplish circles under her sunken eyes. She looked gaunt, haunted, like a prisoner who had escaped an execution cell only to realize the world outside was just a bigger cage.
"Shoot me then," she whispered, her voice cracking. "Go ahead, Daniel. It would be an act of mercy compared to what your family has been doing to me for the last eight months."
"My family?" Daniel scoffed, though an icy prickle of doubt sparked in his chest. "You were sleeping with Julian, weren't you? This is his coup. The two of you planned to fake an heir, claim the trust fund, and push me out of the company!"
Vanessa let out a dry, humorless laugh that ended in a choked sob. "You idiot. You blind, arrogant idiot. Look around you! Does this look like the setup of a woman who wanted to steal your money?"
She reached into her coat. Daniel cocked the hammer of the revolver. *Click.*
"Shoot or read, Daniel. Those are your choices." She threw the crumpled sheaf of papers across the floor. They skidded to a halt against his leather shoes.
Daniel kept the gun pointed at her with one hand, crouching slightly to retrieve the papers with the other. He unfolded them under the tactical light.
It was a legal contract, executed under absolute non-disclosure, bearing the private seal of the Sterling Family Trust.
The signatures at the bottom were not Julian's.
They belonged to **Eleanor Sterling**—Daniel’s own mother—and Dr. Sarah Sterling.
Daniel’s eyes skimmed the text, each clause hitting him like a sledgehammer:
> *Clause 4.1: In the event of secondary maternal failure, the Subject (Vanessa Sterling) shall maintain the public appearance of a viable dual-gestation pregnancy through the designated maturity date.*
> *Clause 4.2: In exchange for total compliance and the subsequent surrender of all legal rights to the surrogate infants procured via Clinic 9 (Kyiv), Subject shall receive total medical debt forgiveness and the cancellation of her brother’s offshore institutionalization fees.*
> *Clause 9.0: Failure to deliver the required heir prior to the Executor's thirty-fifth birthday will result in the immediate enforcement of the $12,000,000 indemnity lien against Subject's family estate.*
Daniel’s vision blurred. "What... what is this?"
"I was pregnant, Daniel," Vanessa sobbed, finally collapsing onto the edge of the clinical bed, burying her face in her hands. "I was so happy. You remember that weekend in Aspen? We made those babies in that cabin. I felt them. I loved them."
She looked up, her face twisted in absolute anguish.
"At eleven weeks, I started bleeding. I called your mother. You were in Tokyo negotiating the maritime merger. I begged her to take me to the hospital. But Eleanor... Eleanor didn't take me to a public hospital. She was terrified of the press. Terrified that if the board found out the pregnancy was non-viable, the stock would crash before your birthday."
Vanessa gripped her own stomach, her fingers digging through the fabric of her trench coat into the flat, empty flesh beneath.
"She brought me here, Daniel. Down into this godforsaken vault. Julian and his wife brought medical equipment in the middle of the night. I miscarried on that very bed you’re standing next to. I bled until I went into cardiac arrest. When I woke up, Julian had performed an emergency hysterectomy. They took my uterus. They took everything."
Daniel felt the floor drop out from under him. The gun in his hand grew impossibly heavy. "No. No, my mother wouldn't... she loves Ethan. She loved you."
"Your mother loves the Sterling name, and she loves power!" Vanessa screamed, her voice echoing violently off the concrete walls. "When I woke up, Eleanor was sitting right where you are now. She held that contract in front of my face. She said, *‘Daniel will never know. If he knows, he will abandon the company to Julian, and we will lose everything. You will wear the silicone. You will smile for the cameras. And on your due date, a private jet will land from Ukraine carrying twin infants genetically matched to Daniel's donor profile.’*"
Daniel stepped back, his back hitting the steel wall. His chest heaved as memories from the last eight months flashed before his eyes with horrifying clarity.
Eleanor insisted on hiring private nurses.
Eleanor insisted Vanessa never use the main house’s master bathroom.
Eleanor personally oversaw every single media release, every high-society appearance, strictly dictating when Vanessa could sit, stand, and what she could wear.
"The belly folded," Daniel whispered, the memory of Ethan jumping on her flashing through his mind. "The silicone cracked..."
"The mold was custom-built in Germany. It had internal pneumatic bladders to simulate fetal movement," Vanessa whispered, her tears flowing freely now. "When Ethan jumped on me, the inner aluminum brace snapped against the marble. It compressed the valve. The whole thing collapsed. I knew... I knew the moment it happened that my life was over."
Daniel lowered the revolver. His heart was hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. "The titanium drive. The bearer bonds. What were they for?"
Vanessa wiped her eyes with the back of her sleeve, her expression hardening into cold resolve.

"The surrogate jet landed in Vancouver three hours ago," she said. "Julian wasn't trying to help Eleanor save the company, Daniel. Julian played her from the start. He hijacked the transport. He has the babies. And he has a sniper watching your house right now."
