Chapter 6 - The Shadow in the Mirror

The ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner of the library was deafening. Outside, thunder rattled the leaded glass windows, casting momentary flashes of pale, violent light across the room.
"You're a monster, Julian," Vanessa spat, stepping past Daniel, her knuckles white around the brass crowbar. "You set this up from the very beginning. You knew about my medical history before Daniel even proposed to me!"
Julian turned his gaze toward her, his eyes glittering with theatrical delight. "Of course I did, darling. Who do you think paid your brother’s medical bills in Zurich? Who do you think leaked your resume to Daniel’s executive search firm? You were the perfect mark. Desperate, loyal, beautiful, and possessing a reproductive system that was already a ticking time bomb. I knew you'd never carry to term. I just had to wait for nature to take its course, and let dear Aunt Eleanor’s panic do the rest of my work for me."
Eleanor rose from her chair, her face flushed with humiliation. "Julian, you swore to me! You signed the Zurich escrow agreement! The children were supposed to be delivered to the estate, the trust would validate Daniel’s succession, and you would receive the European maritime routes!"
"Oh, Auntie," Julian sighed, shaking his head with mock pity. "Did you really think I’d settle for thirty percent of the shipping lanes when I could have the entire fleet? You old fool. You handed me the noose, put it around your son’s neck, and then handed me the stool to kick out from under him."
Daniel didn't look at his mother. The revulsion burning in his gut was absolute. Eleanor had destroyed Vanessa, risked Ethan's life, and traded away their humanity, all to keep a corporate logo on a skyscraper.
"Julian," Daniel said, his voice flat, dangerously steady. "The transfer of executive power requires dual-factor corporate biometric authentication. The board won't accept my signature without the physical security token."
Julian smirked, reaching into his pocket. He pulled out a sleek silver thumb-drive and held it between two fingers. "You mean the master token? The one you keep in Sub-Basement Vault 04? Don't insult my intelligence, Daniel. Vanessa already had it taped inside that ridiculous rubber belly of hers. Where is it?"
Daniel slowly reached into his left pocket. He produced the titanium hard drive recovered from the silicone prosthetic.
"Here it is," Daniel said, holding it out. "Everything you need to liquidate the trust. The master cryptographic keys to the entire Sterling infrastructure."
Julian’s eyes flared with unadulterated greed. For all his planning, for all his sociopathic patience, he was still an addict for power, and the fix was ten feet away from him.
"Slide it across the table," Julian ordered, reaching into his jacket for his own weapon—a sleek, matte-black Glock. "Do it slowly, cousin."
Vanessa glanced at Daniel. In that split-second exchange of glances, Daniel saw no fear in her eyes—only a feral, protective rage.
"Daniel, don't," she pleaded aloud, playing the part of the defeated victim. "He won't let us live anyway!"
"Quiet, Vanessa," Daniel commanded softly. He took two steps toward the large mahogany conference table, extending his arm, letting the titanium drive dangle from his fingertips. "Take it, Julian. Just let Ethan go."
Julian stepped away from the fireplace, his gun trained squarely on Daniel’s chest. He reached his left hand out toward the drive.
*Crack-BOOM!*
A blinding bolt of lightning struck the transformer in the estate's garden.
The entire mansion plunged into pitch-black darkness.
"Kill the boy!" Julian roared into his smartwatch.
Before the sound of Julian’s voice had even finished echoing, Daniel didn't drop to the floor. He lunged forward.
His left hand slammed into Julian’s gun wrist, knocking the weapon’s trajectory upward just as a deafening gunshot illuminated the dark room with a violent muzzle flash. The bullet tore through the ceiling plaster, showering them in white dust.
"Vanessa, the stairs!" Daniel yelled, driving his shoulder into Julian’s ribs with the full force of his body.
The two men crashed into the heavy mahogany table, sending crystal decanters and silver trays shattering across the floor. In the dark, Daniel drove his elbow into Julian’s jaw, feeling the sickening crunch of bone. Julian screamed, clawing at Daniel’s eyes, his fingers slick with spilled single-malt Scotch.
Behind them, the brass crowbar whistled through the air.
*CLANG!*
Vanessa brought the heavy metal down onto the back of Julian’s knee. Julian let out a guttural howl of agony, his leg collapsing beneath him as he crashed face-first onto the shards of broken glass.
"Run!" Daniel yelled, grabbing Vanessa’s arm and dragging her out of the library into the black corridor.
Above them, on the second floor, the distinct, rhythmic thump of military combat boots began descending the grand spiral staircase.

Julian’s mercenary was coming.
