Chapter 14 - The Blueprint of the Catacombs

By dusk, the coastal cabin was empty. We were flying down the interstate toward Boston in Julian’s armored sedan, the speedometer pinned at ninety miles an hour.
The windshield wipers beat frantically against the sudden downpour. Inside the car, the silence was suffocating. On my lap sat the steel case we had retrieved from the cellar. It didn't just contain medical reports; it held an architectural blueprint stamped with my own firm’s official seal from three years ago.
"Look at this," I broke the silence, spreading the yellowed vellum across the dashboard light. "Julian, this is the master plan for the reconstruction of the Vance ancestral estate—the project your father hired my architectural firm to redesign before he died."
"I know," Julian murmured, his knuckles white on the steering wheel.
"No, you don't know!" I said, tracing the ink lines with a frantic fingernail. "Look at the sub-foundation beneath the north ballroom. When I submitted these plans, the zoning board rejected this lower quadrant. They said the bedrock was unstable and ordered it filled with concrete slurry."
Julian glanced sideways, his jaw muscle twitching. "And?"
"The contractor never poured the slurry," I whispered, pointing to the red pen revisions marked along the vault lines. "Someone altered the blueprints after I signed off on them. There is a two-thousand-square-foot subterranean bunker beneath the burned ruins of the estate. It has its own dedicated power grid, an air-filtration shaft disguised as an ornamental garden fountain, and a fiber-optic data feed connected directly to the Cayman Islands."
The truth slammed into me like a physical blow.
The night Eleanor had pushed me down the church steps in my wedding gown... it hadn't just been out of jealous hysteria or hatred for the woman replacing her in the family hierarchy.
"I was never supposed to be Julian's trophy wife," I realized aloud, turning to him in horror. "I was chosen because as the lead architect, I possessed the municipal access codes to the historical underground maps of the Vance district. Eleanor pushed me because I was getting too close to auditing the foundation permits!"
Julian took one hand off the wheel and caught mine, squeezing so tightly it hurt.
"Clara, listen to me very carefully," Julian said, his voice laced with a dark, desperate urgency. "Eleanor didn't push you because of the permits. She pushed you because Christian Vance isn't buried in that family crypt."
The car swerved slightly as the rain turned into sleet.
"What did you say?" I gasped.
May you like
"My brother Christian didn't drown in that yacht explosion two years ago," Julian whispered, staring into the dark highway ahead. "He staged it to escape a federal treason indictment. And Eleanor didn't push you to hide the bunker. She pushed you because Christian was hiding *inside* it—and he wanted the only architect who could unlock the blast doors dead before she realized what she had built."
