Chapter 19 - The Master Key

"Lean in, Clara," Eleanor hissed, stepping right behind my left shoulder. "Just your right eye. Don't blink."

I leaned toward the scanner. The red laser grid swept across my cornea, beeping rhythmically.

*BIOMETRIC MATCH CONFIRMED: CLARA MORRISON-VANCE.*

*ACCESS GRANTED TO LEVEL 4 EMERGENCY PROTOCOLS.*

"Now enter the master ledger password," Christian commanded, stepping up beside me, leaning over my shoulder to watch the keyboard. He was so close I could smell the expensive tobacco on his coat.

My fingers hovered over the mechanical keys.

"Julian," I whispered.

"Clara, don't," Julian pleaded from the center of the room.

"Do you remember the vows we took in Maine?" I asked, my voice impossibly steady.

Christian scowled. "Enough sentimentality. Enter the password or your sister dies!"

"You asked me what I meant when I said 'I do,'" I continued, looking straight at Julian through the reflection of the glass. "I meant until death do us part."

My fingers flew across the keys, but I didn't type the offshore account password.

I typed the structural emergency code: *FAIL-SAFE-ZERO-ZERO-VENT.*

A piercing siren shattered the quiet of the bunker. The emergency lights instantly flipped from clinical white to flashing, apocalyptic crimson.

*WARNING: STRUCTURAL AIR INTAKE VALVES REVERSED. VACUUM PURGE INITIATED. BLAST DOORS SEALING IN TEN SECONDS.*

"What did you do?!" Christian screamed, lunging for the console.

Before he could touch the keyboard, Julian exploded into motion. He didn't dive for his gun—he lunged straight at his brother, his shoulder slamming into Christian’s chest with the force of a freight train, crashing them both over the black glass conference table. The heavy table shattered with a deafening crash of tempered glass and splintering steel.

Eleanor shrieked, driving the syringe toward my neck.

I didn't cower. I grabbed her wrist with my scarred left arm—the arm they thought was broken forever—and twisted it violently against the edge of the console. Eleanor screamed as bone snapped, the syringe dropping and shattering on the concrete. I drove my elbow straight into her jaw, sending her sprawling backward onto the hard floor.

"Clara! The door!" Julian roared from the floor, grappling with his brother in a vicious, bloody tangle of punches. "Get to the stairwell!"

Heavy steel blast doors were already sliding down from the ceiling over the exit shaft, their hydraulic motors whining under maximum load.

"I'm not leaving without you!" I screamed.

Christian Vance, bleeding heavily from his nose, jammed his thumb into Julian’s wounded shoulder—the old bullet wound that had never fully healed. Julian gasped in white-hot agony, his grip slipping as Christian broke free and scrambled toward the control desk to abort the purge.

I looked at the blast door. It was three feet from the floor and dropping fast.
