Chapter 4 - The Safehouse Fortress

Julian didn't hesitate. Ignoring the blinding agony in his fractured ribs, he vaulted across the bed, his forearm slamming like a lead pipe across the false nurse’s throat.
The woman gasped, dropping the syringe, but she reacted with combat-trained reflexes. She brought her elbow back into Julian’s injured ribs. Julian grunted, white-hot fire tearing through his torso, but he refused to yield. He drove her back against the tiled wall, his fingers locking around the wrist with the scorpion tattoo, bending it backward until the bone popped.
The syringe rolled beneath the bed, its contents leaking into the dust—a clear liquid that began to hiss faintly on the linoleum. Potassium chloride. A fatal dose that would have caused instant cardiac arrest, masquerading as sudden pregnancy-induced heart failure.
The door burst open. The two hired NYPD officers rushed in with their Glocks drawn. "Hands! Show your hands!"
The assassin, realizing she was cornered, dropped to her knees, spitting a curse in Russian.
"Get her out of here, call Internal Affairs, and lock down this entire wing!" Julian roared, breathing heavily, clutching his bleeding side where his stitches had torn open. He turned to Clara, who was hyperventilating, pressing her back against the hospital pillows.
"We have to go," Julian said, grabbing her medical chart and ripping out her IV lines. "Now. Eleanor owns this hospital board. If she can send someone into this room, she can buy the entire staff."
Twenty minutes later, disguised in maintenance jumpsuits and guided down the hospital’s subterranean laundry tunnels, Julian carried Clara to an unmarked, armored Chevrolet Suburban waiting in the rain-slicked service alley.
At the wheel was Marcus Cole, Julian’s former commander from his brief service in the Navy reserves—a man who owed zero allegiance to the Montgomery fortune.
"Where to, boss?" Marcus asked, revving the twin-turbo engine as the heavy SUV shot into the Manhattan traffic.
"The Palisades bunker," Julian ordered, wrapping Clara in a heavy cashmere blanket as the Suburban sped north toward the Hudson River. "The cliff house my grandfather built in the seventies. It’s off the grid. No digital locks, no smart home interfaces. Eleanor doesn't even have the deed."
As the Manhattan skyline disappeared into the storm behind them, Clara looked down at a manila folder Julian had grabbed from his coat. Inside were printed bank statements, toxicology reports from a decade ago, and a notarized copy of the Montgomery Trust indenture.
"Julian," Clara whispered, her voice trembling. "Look at the clause on page twelve."
Julian turned the page. Under the bold heading **SPECIAL SUCCESSION DIRECTIVE**, his eyes scanned the yellowing paper:
*'In the event that the primary heir shall perish without surviving issue, the totality of the estate shall dissolve into a blind trust administered exclusively by Eleanor Montgomery for the remainder of her natural life.'*
Julian felt the blood drain from his face.
It was never just about Clara. Eleanor wasn't just trying to kill the baby.

She was setting up an endgame where Julian was supposed to die with them.
