Chapter 5 - The Matriarch's Web

By dawn, the world had been painted with Eleanor Montgomery’s version of reality.

Sitting in the steel-reinforced living room of the Palisades fortress, surrounded by panoramic views of the foggy Hudson River, Clara watched the giant television mounted above the stone fireplace.

Every major network was carrying the story. Eleanor, dressed in mournful charcoal cashmere, was giving a press conference outside the Manhattan District Attorney's office.

*"My son Julian has suffered a catastrophic mental breakdown,"* Eleanor wept before a forest of microphones, dabbing her eyes with a lace handkerchief. *"Following the tragic balcony accident, for which our family takes full structural responsibility, Julian assaulted hospital staff and abducted his critically injured, seven-months-pregnant wife from intensive care. We believe he is armed, psychotic, and suffering from acute paranoid delirium. Clara’s life, and the life of my unborn grandchild, are in mortal danger. I am begging the public: help bring my son home before he commits an unthinkable tragedy."*

Below her image, a red banner flashed across CNN: **AMBER ALERT / MANHUNT ISSUED FOR BILLIONAIRE HEIR JULIAN MONTGOMERY.**

"She flipped it," Clara gasped, dropping her mug of tea onto the rug. "She made *you* the monster. The police won't try to arrest you, Julian... they'll shoot you on sight!"

"That's her playbook," Julian replied, his voice terrifyingly calm. He was cleaning an unregistered 12-gauge shotgun on the dining table, his face drawn tight as drumskin. "She controls the media outlets, she donates millions to the police benevolent associations, and she just froze all my domestic accounts. As far as the law is concerned, I am an armed fugitive holding a pregnant hostage."

Marcus entered the room, holding an encrypted satellite phone. "Julian, we've got a problem. The local power grid just tripped two miles south of here. Someone cut the fiber-optic cables along Route 9W."

Julian didn't blink. He chambered a shell into the shotgun with a crisp, lethal *clack*.

"She found us faster than I expected," Julian said. "Marcus, how long until the perimeter sensors trigger?"

"Ten minutes. Maybe less. They brought heavy heat, Julian. I picked up three tactical radio chatter frequencies using military encryption. These aren't private detectives. These are black-ops contractors."

Clara stood up, gripping the edge of the table as a sudden, sharp pain lanced through her pelvis. She cried out, falling to her knees.

"Clara!" Julian dropped the weapon and dropped down beside her. "What is it? Is it the baby?"

"Julian... my water," Clara whispered in sheer terror, looking down at the wet stain spreading across the hardwood floor. "My water just broke."
