Chapter 4 - THE SIGNATURE THAT WASN’T MINE

By late afternoon, the party at the villa was over. Music no longer shook the glass doors. The empty bottles had been collected from the patio. The Jet Skis were tied at the dock in a neat line, harmless-looking machines bobbing gently in the golden light.
Emily returned from the clinic with Daniel and a local nurse who had insisted she should not be alone. Ryan was waiting in the living room. So were Tyler, Mason, Jenna, and Brooke.
No one looked comfortable. Ryan stood first. “Finally.” Daniel stepped between them without making it obvious. Emily noticed. Ryan noticed too. “I want to speak to my wife.” Emily held Daniel’s jacket closed around herself.
She had changed into a dry robe at the clinic, but her hair was still damp and tangled. The scrape on her arm had been cleaned and bandaged.
“You can speak,” she said. “Everyone stays.” Ryan’s eyes flicked toward the others. “This is insane.” “No. This is documented.” The room went quiet. Daniel placed his phone on the coffee table and began recording openly.
Ryan laughed once. “Of course.” Emily turned to Jenna. “Do you still have your video?” Jenna nodded. “Original file?” “Yes.” “Please don’t edit it. Don’t crop it. Don’t send it through an app that compresses it.”
Jenna swallowed. “Okay.” Tyler looked guilty. “I have mine too.” Mason nodded after a pause. Emily looked at Brooke. Brooke’s face was unreadable. “I deleted mine.” Daniel’s gaze sharpened. Ryan spoke too quickly. “There. She deleted it. So what?”
Emily did not look at him. “Why?” Brooke crossed her arms. “Because it was awful.” “That didn’t answer me.” Brooke looked toward Ryan for half a second. Emily saw it. A year earlier, she might have missed the glance.
Six months earlier, she might have explained it away. After the Northline documents, every small movement had a different meaning.
“You knew about the trust loan,” Emily said. Brooke’s face changed. Tyler turned toward her. “What trust loan?” Ryan stepped forward. “Emily, stop.” Daniel raised one hand. “Do not approach her.” Ryan stared at him. “You’re enjoying this.”
“I’m doing my job.” Emily pulled the corporate filing from the waterproof envelope and placed it on the glass table. Brooke looked at the page. Her shoulders dropped. Mason leaned closer. “What is Northline Ventures?”
No one answered. Emily did. “A company Ryan owns with Brooke.” Tyler gave a short, stunned laugh. “What?” Brooke’s eyes filled with panic. “It isn’t what you think.” “Then explain it,” Emily said.
Ryan snapped, “You don’t owe them an explanation.” Brooke turned on him. “Shut up.” It was the first moment Emily knew Ryan was losing control. Brooke began talking fast. Northline had been pitched to her as a media startup.
Ryan claimed he was bringing in capital from a family investment vehicle. He told her Emily knew about the project but wanted no public involvement because of the pregnancy.
“I thought the money was legitimate,” Brooke said. Emily watched her carefully. “Why did you delete the video?” Brooke’s answer took too long. Daniel noticed. “Ms. Ellison,” he said, “if the deletion was intended to destroy evidence after you knew litigation was likely, that could become significant.”
Brooke’s fear deepened. “I still have it in recently deleted.” Ryan cursed. Everyone looked at him. That single reaction said more than Brooke’s words. Emily felt her baby shift beneath her ribs. She placed a hand against her stomach and breathed slowly.
Brooke unlocked her phone. Ryan moved. He crossed two steps before Daniel blocked him. Tyler stood as well, suddenly understanding what Ryan was trying to do. “Sit down,” Tyler said. Ryan stared at him. “You too?”
“This stopped being funny the second she screamed.” Ryan’s face hardened. For years, Ryan had built his power from people’s reluctance to challenge him. Now challenge came from every corner of the room.
Brooke restored the file. Daniel instructed her to send the original through a secure transfer link. Then Brooke whispered, “There’s something else.” Ryan closed his eyes. Emily’s heartbeat accelerated. Brooke opened another folder on her phone.
Not a video. Screenshots. Messages. Ryan had texted Brooke repeatedly about Northline. Some were business-related. Others were intimate in a way no married woman could misread. I wish you were the one coming home with me.
Once Emily has the baby, things change. We just need to get through the next few months. Emily read without reacting. The affair was almost easier to understand than the fraud. Betrayal was familiar.
Planning was colder. Brooke began crying. “It started six months ago. I tried to end it.” Emily looked at her. “Did you know he forged my signature?” “No.” “Did you know the money came from my trust?”
“No.” Ryan laughed bitterly. “She’s lying to save herself.” Brooke looked at him with disgust. Then she opened one final image. It was a photograph of a document Ryan had sent her, asking whether a signature looked convincing enough.
Emily’s signature. Not on the loan. On a separate authorization form. Daniel took the phone. His expression changed immediately. “This is not the same transaction.” Emily felt cold. “What is it?” Daniel zoomed in.
The document authorized the transfer of management rights for a trust-owned property company. If filed successfully, it could have given Ryan indirect control over several assets. Brooke shook her head. “I told him I didn’t know anything about signatures. I thought he was joking.”
Ryan exploded. “That’s enough.” He reached for the phone. Tyler stepped in front of him. For one second, the room seemed ready to erupt. Then the nurse from the clinic appeared in the doorway.
“Mrs. Carter?” Everyone froze. She pointed toward Emily’s robe. A thin line of blood had appeared near Emily’s knee. The room tilted. Ryan’s anger vanished. Emily looked down. Her baby moved once.

Then not again. Daniel was already calling for an ambulance. And suddenly the financial war, the affair, the forged signatures—everything disappeared behind one terrible fear. Emily pressed both hands to her stomach. “Please,” she whispered. Not to Ryan.
Not to anyone in the room. To the child inside her. “Please stay with me.”
