Chapter 5 - THE VIDEO NOBODY EXPECTED

The bleeding turned out to be minor, but nobody knew that during the twenty-seven minutes it took to reach the island’s emergency facility. Emily lay on her side while a medic monitored her blood pressure. Every bump in the road felt enormous.

Daniel sat near her feet, silent, while Jenna rode in front after insisting she would not let Emily go alone. Ryan was told to remain behind. For the first time in their marriage, Emily did not care how furious that made him. At the hospital, an ultrasound confirmed a steady heartbeat.

There were no clear signs of placental abruption, but the doctor wanted extended monitoring and immediate transfer to a larger hospital if anything changed.

Emily cried when she saw the flickering image on the screen. Jenna cried too. Daniel stood near the wall with his arms folded, his face composed but pale. After the doctor left, Jenna sat beside the bed.

“I’m sorry.” Emily looked at her. “For laughing,” Jenna said. “For filming. For not stopping him faster.” “You stopped.” “Too late.” Emily understood that feeling. Too late had become the rhythm of her own thoughts. Too late to notice the money.

Too late to see Brooke. Too late to recognize that Ryan’s charm was often just control with better lighting. Daniel’s phone buzzed. He checked the screen. Then he looked at Emily. “We have a problem.” Her stomach tightened. “What now?” He turned the phone toward her. A video had been posted online.

Not one of Jenna’s. Ryan’s. The clip began after Emily entered the water. It cut away before she screamed. It showed Ryan easing forward slowly, Emily laughing nervously for half a second, and then a jump cut to friends cheering.

The caption read: PREGNANT WIFE STILL HAS MORE COURAGE THAN HALF THE INTERNET. Emily stared at it. “He edited it.” “Yes.” “He posted it after the ambulance came?” Daniel nodded. The cruelty of that choice stunned her.

Ryan was not trying to protect her. He was protecting the narrative. Comments were already appearing beneath the video. Some called it reckless. Others treated it as a joke. A few accused Emily of pretending to be upset because “influencer couples always stage drama.”

Jenna stood. “I have the whole thing.” Daniel looked at her. “Do not post it.” “Why not?” “Because we preserve evidence first.” Jenna paced once. “He’s making her look like she agreed.”

“I know.” Emily held out her hand. “Let me see the original.” Jenna opened the file. The raw footage was worse than Emily remembered. Her refusal was clear. Ryan’s response was audible.

Stop embarrassing me. His friends were heard chanting. Then came Emily’s warning, the engine, the violent pull, her scream, and Ryan looking back while laughing. The camera shook when Jenna realized what was happening. For three seconds, the lens pointed toward the shoreline.

Then it captured something nobody had noticed in the chaos. Brooke. She was not watching Emily. She was watching Ryan’s open beach bag. Emily leaned closer. “What is she doing?” Jenna replayed it.

Brooke crouched beside the bag, removed a black object, looked toward the Jet Ski, and slipped the object beneath a cushion on the patio sofa. Daniel’s posture changed. “Pause.” Jenna froze the frame.

The object was rectangular. A second phone. Ryan carried two phones. One personal. One he claimed belonged to his company. Emily had never been allowed to touch the company phone. Daniel looked at Jenna. “Was that still there when you left?”

“I don’t know.” He was already dialing. The villa manager answered on the fourth ring. Daniel identified himself and asked that nobody enter the patio area until he returned. Then he requested local law enforcement because there was potential evidence connected to alleged financial fraud.

Emily watched him hang up. “You think Brooke hid it?” “I think the video shows her moving it.” “Why?” “We find out before we guess.” Two hours later, Daniel returned to the hospital with a deputy and a sealed evidence pouch.

Inside was the phone. Brooke had admitted she moved it after Ryan came back from the water. She said Ryan had told her weeks earlier that if anything “went wrong” with Northline, the company phone needed to disappear.

She panicked. She hid it. Then the ambulance came, and she never retrieved it. The deputy explained that the device would require proper legal process before anyone could search it. Daniel smiled without humor.

“We already have a preservation order drafted.” Ryan’s social media video continued gaining views. Then something unexpected happened. Tyler posted a statement. No video. No dramatic language. Just three sentences. I was there today. Emily repeatedly told Ryan not to do what happened.

The edited clip being shared online does not show the full event. Mason reposted it. Then Jenna posted the same statement. Within minutes, the comments under Ryan’s video shifted. People began asking for the original footage. Ryan deleted the post. That deletion created a second wave.

Screenshots had already spread. So had his caption. Daniel sat beside Emily after midnight. “Tomorrow morning, I’m filing for emergency protective orders regarding finances and contact. I’ll also seek to freeze Northline-related assets.”

Emily looked toward the hospital window. Catalina’s lights were small across the darkness. “What happens to Ryan?” “That depends on several investigations and what evidence supports.” She appreciated that Daniel never promised outcomes.

He only promised process. Her phone vibrated. A message from an unknown number appeared. You don’t know me. Ryan does. Before you trust Brooke, ask where she was on March 14. Emily stared at the screen.

May you like

Daniel read it over her shoulder. “Do you know that date?” Emily’s breath slowed. Yes. March 14 was the day her father’s trust records showed the first unauthorized access attempt. She typed nothing. A second message arrived. I have proof. Then a photo.

It showed Brooke entering a bank office with Ryan. Six months before the affair supposedly began.
