Chapter 12 - A Whisper in the Nursery

Mara didn't think; she moved on pure survival instinct honed through years of protecting people who couldn't protect themselves. She dove over the edge of the hospital bed, scooping baby Hope out of the acrylic bassinet in one fluid, sweeping motion, tucking the infant tight against her breastplate while shielding the child’s mouth with the hem of her thick fleece jacket.

"Miller! Vent! It’s aerosolized!" Mara shouted, stumbling as her bruised ribs caught the metal railing of the bed.

Miller reacted instantly, drawing his Glock 19 and grabbing the heavy cotton privacy curtain, ripping it from its ceiling track with a violent wrench. He jammed the thick cloth into the HVAC exhaust grille, temporarily damming the white vapor, but the faint smell of bitter almonds had already begun to taint the sterile hospital air.

"Cyanide derivative," Miller coughed, his eyes watering instantly as he backed away. "Cover your mouths! Clara, on your feet, now!"

Clara was already moving despite the tearing agony in her stitched abdomen. Motherhood had overridden shock; she swung her legs over the bed, hissing in pain as her bare feet hit the cold linoleum, reaching out frantically for her daughter.

"Give her to me," Clara gasped, her hands shaking violently. "Mara, give her to me!"

"Keep moving!" Mara barked, transferring Hope into Clara’s arms and stripping off her own jacket to wrap it entirely around both mother and child. She turned toward Julianne. "Julianne, grab Lily! Don't look back, don't stop for shoes, run!"

The emergency sirens screamed down the corridor, their harsh red strobes painting the walls in bloody hues. But as Miller kicked open the heavy door to Room 714, the corridor wasn't full of panicked doctors or scrambling nurses.

The hallway was dead silent.

The two CPD officers stationed outside were slumped against the wall, their zip-ties still on their belts, dark crimson pooling beneath their tactical vests onto the white linoleum floor. Standing over them were two men dressed in black EMT uniforms, their faces concealed by Kevlar tactical masks, suppressed submachine guns raised directly at the doorway.

"Down!" Miller bellowed, dropping to one knee and firing twice through the doorway.

The deafening crack of his Glock reverberated through the narrow corridor. One of the disguised operatives took a round directly to the center chest, stumbling backward against the nurses' station, his weapon spraying a burst of suppressed rounds into the ceiling tiles, raining down drywall and fluorescent glass.

Mara didn’t wait. She seized the heavy stainless steel IV pole beside Clara’s bed, stepped through the doorway with feral fury, and drove the weighted base like a javelin straight into the throat of the second shooter before he could realign his weapon. The impact produced a sickening crunch; the man collapsed, gagging against the floor.

"Stairs! Not the elevator!" Mara yelled, her lungs burning from the toxic residue drifting out of Room 714.

They sprinted down the corridor—Clara clutching Hope to her chest, Julianne carrying Lily, Miller covering their flank, and Mara bringing up the rear with the fallen operative’s discarded weapon. The heavy hospital doors to the west stairwell were marked with red exit signs, but as they reached the threshold, the heavy magnetic locks suddenly engaged with a loud, mechanical thud.

*CLANG.*

"Locked!" Julianne sobbed, slamming her shoulder against the push bar. "It’s sealed from the central grid!"

Behind them, the elevator chime sounded at the far end of the hall.

*Ding.*

The polished chrome doors slid open. Inside stood four men in tailored charcoal suits, their faces cold, impassive, and familiar to anyone who read the city’s financial pages. But in their gloved hands were high-capacity tactical shotguns.

And standing right behind them, stepping out of the elevator cab with a cold, predatory smirk across her bruised, aristocratic face, was Evelyn Voss.

Her designer silk blouse was stained with the blood of the marshals she had killed to escape, and her manicured hand rested lightly on a tactical remote control.

"Did you really think a few badges and a corrupt judge’s arrest would touch me, Mara?" Evelyn’s voice echoed down the blood-spattered corridor, smooth and venomous. "You destroyed my hotel. You stole my property. And now, you’re going to watch me take every single breath from that baby’s lungs."
