Chapter 7 - What Lies Beneath the Grand

The heat struck Mara like a physical blow.
Sub-Level 3 felt less like a modern hotel utility room and more like the engine room of a pre-war battleship. Massive steam pipes wrapped in decaying insulation snaked across the ceiling, weeping condensation that hissed as it dripped onto the sizzling iron grating beneath her feet.
In the center of the vast chamber stood the two colossal incinerators. They were towering cylinders of riveted iron, twenty feet high, their combustion chambers rumbling with an internal roar that vibrated through the soles of Mara's boots.
Tied to the iron pillar twenty paces away, exactly as she had appeared on the monitor, was Julianne Hart.
Julianne was barely conscious. Her head slumped against her chest, her dark hair matted with blood from a jagged cut along her hairline. Her wrists were secured to the pillar with industrial zip-ties, pulled so tight that her hands were swollen and dark purple.
"Julianne!" Mara hissed, running across the grating, her eyes sweeping the shadowed catwalks above.
Julianne stirred, her eyelids fluttering open. Her hazel eyes—the exact same shade as Lily’s—struggled to focus in the dim orange light.
"Mara...?" Julianne croaked, her voice dry as dust. "No... no, Mara, get out... it’s a trap..."
"Where is the technician?" Mara demanded, pulling the box-cutter from her pocket and sawing frantically at the thick plastic zip-ties binding Julianne's wrists. "Where did he go?"
"He... he set the automatic feed..." Julianne gasped, coughing as the heat from the furnace scorched her throat. "The hydraulic pusher... it activates at midnight... it sweeps the platform into the burner..."
Mara saw it now. Julianne wasn't just tied to a post; she was standing on a motorized conveyor ramp that fed directly into the yawning, iron maw of Incinerator Number One. The steel hatch was already open, revealing the swirling vortex of orange-and-blue flames inside. The radiant heat was so intense it was blistering the skin on Julianne's arms.
*SNAP.*
The first zip-tie parted. Mara sawed at the second with frantic, sawing strokes. "Lily is safe, Julianne! Do you hear me? Lily is alive! She's upstairs in the laundry depot!"
A ragged sob broke from Julianne's chest. "Lily... oh, God, my baby..."
*SNAP.*
The second tie gave way. Julianne’s limp weight collapsed forward, and Mara caught her, wrapping an arm around the auditor's ribs to support her.
"Can you walk?" Mara asked urgently.
"I... I think my ankle is fractured," Julianne groaned, leaning heavily against Mara. "The ledger... Mara, they can't burn the ledger..."
"Forget the damn ledger! We have to get you out of here!"
"No!" Julianne gripped Mara’s collar with surprising, desperate strength. "The ledger isn't paper! It’s an encrypted flash drive... it’s hidden inside Lily's shoe! Under the sole! It has the names... senators, foreign diplomats, hotel executives... everyone who paid Evelyn Voss to use those children! If Evelyn gets that drive, she walks free forever!"
"The card was in her sock," Mara realized aloud. "The drive must still be in the sole."
"Well, isn't that a lovely piece of information," a voice drawled from the shadows behind the boiler tanks.
Mara spun around, shielding Julianne with her own body.
Emerging from behind the primary steam manifold was Mercer. His broken wrist had been crudely splinted with duct tape and cardboard, his suit coat was gone, and his Glock 17 was leveled squarely at Mara’s forehead.
Standing behind Mercer were two private security contractors wearing black tactical vests and carrying polymer batons.
"I have to admit, Bennett, you've got more guts than any woman I’ve ever met," Mercer said, cocking the hammer of the pistol with his thumb. "Climbing down a laundry chute? Clever. But this is where the road ends."
Mara tightened her grip on the crowbar, her knuckles aching. "Your boss tried to murder my sister in a hospital room twenty minutes ago, Mercer. The police are already crawling through this building. Miller knows."
Mercer chuckled, a low, wet sound that made Julianne shudder. "Miller doesn't know a thing. And even if he did, he can't get down here without the override code. And the only people who have that code are Ms. Voss... and me."
The digital clock on the incinerator panel beeped sharply.
**00:00:00**
A loud, hydraulic groan echoed through the chamber. Beneath Mara and Julianne's feet, the steel conveyor ramp shuddered, gears engaging with a deafening grind. The ramp began to tilt upward, sliding them inch by inch toward the roaring furnace hatch.

"Kill them both," Mercer ordered his men coldly. "Throw them in together. Clean up the ash by morning."
